Why is there anything with wrong with them highlighting the ability to register - a service they facilitate.

Would you be outraged if they drew attention to the fact that they provided vetting services?
Garda vetting service falls within their remit, the electoral register does not. Should the defence forces get involved with the democratic process too?

it is not their business to promote voter registration. they may facilitate those who wish to register but that is all. At this stage you are just arguing the toss for the sake of it.

These are community policing Gardaí. They get involved with events organised by travellers, the elderly, lgbt, immigrants, educational groups and many more. They do so at the request of the groups themselves for various reasons. You ask why they have not been seen doing this for previous referenda. Can you say how many times they have been asked to do something similar? It's also worth pointing out that this isn't the only place where Gardaí were set up to help people register.

It just so happens that one of them, just one, set up at a table next to an lgbt activist.

who happened to put some Vote Yes badges on the table without the gardai noticing? those devious activists.

I've already pointed out that a Garda must witness your declaration on the supplementary register application form.

She probably didn't care where they were.

Amnesty int. among others state that "marriage between individuals of the same-sex is an issue in which fundamental human rights are at stake"

The garda public mission statement is "Convinced that An Garda Síochána, being the national police service of the Republic of Ireland with a public mission, and acting in the public interest, has a fundamental role in protecting and vindicating the personal dignity and human rights of all members of the community;"

So meh, if they were there to promote the act of voting or to promote a yes vote there's no harm done in my opinion. The rest of you can argue about it until your blue in the face...

A uniformed garda involved in the promotion of a voting drive organised by a group campaigning for a particular side in a referendum - sorry this is not ok.

"I decided how to vote because a garda told me" said no one ever.

Mountain out of a molehill issue.

Then why do I have to go to the Garda Station tomorrow to sort my change of address registration form?

Can someone clarify on the "It's a Human Right" to get married. Article 16 only covers a man an woman of age ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,821 ✭✭✭floggg

come on now, you're smarter than that.

And your should be smart enough to accept people have different opinions than you.

I'm done. Enjoy the outrage over a non-story.

And your smarter to think that there's an absolute position on this.

    You think it's political involvement. I don't.

We could have agreed to disagree long ago, but apparently I don't get to have an opinion since your view of it is objective fact.

And no, the fact that the Gardai have said it's inappropriate doesn't mean it was political. It could just mean they decided to drop the issue and kill a non-story.

    [Reeves&Mortimer]You wouldnt let it lie![/Reeves&Mortimer]

Some people human rights transcend what's written on paper.

For example, I think Saudi Arabia's treatment of women is a breach of human rights even if it is legal there.

People supporting police interference in the democratic process when it suits their point of view.

    If you tolerate this....

I wonder where I'll be going to vote. Could hardly be a building run by one of the groups involved.

It'll be a building normally run by either the state or the church most likely - and both will be excluded by law from displaying promotional material for one side or the other in the vicinity.

I am voting No and have encouraged all the people I can to vote No. The arrogance of the yes side is astounding trying to claim the high moral ground on what is a particularly sensitive issue. Senator Katherine Zapone has no democratic mandate from the Irish people and she is one of the persons who been a major instigator of this issue.

The Irish people will give a democratic vote on the issue and it will be a No vote for certain.

so you will vote no because of how you think the Yes side have behaved? The issue we are voting on isnt relevant then? another bigot trying to justify themselves.

How dare you call me a bigot? I am voting because I do not believe in Gay marriage and the behavior of the Yes side has only hardened my resolve.

Dont know what the local school will do doing about the great big cross then. Drape a rainbow flag on them maybe?

I believe in marriage and it something which is between a man an a woman and nothing can ever change this. I also do not beleive unelected senators and lobby groups should be allowed to try dictate the moral compass of this country. What you may consider as equality I consider to be an attack on the family and on some of the social fabric of society. Gay people have the Civil partnerships bill and have full equality already, I am supportive of this but not Gay Marriage.

Do you believe in Civil marriage or Christian matrimony ?

And it is simply not factually correct to say civil partnership is equal to ssm.
