ET 505 Ethiopian Airlines LAX 00:45 DUB 19:30

For me this could actually be ideal getting home to visit. I work near SFO, so could catch an evening flight to LAX. Get into DUB, stay over night and then drive down to Bantry the next day, feeling pretty fresh.

From a jetlag perspective the LAX->DUB is pretty ideal.

Ethiopian rumoured to be moving their Rome fuel stops to Dublin.
    ADD-DUB-IAD and ADD-DUB-YYZ
Not clear if they'll be picking up passengers

Not a rumour but fact and not passenger rights.

    Confirmed, via their booking system.

No passenger rights as of yet. Will have to apply and doubt their will be much point as both routes seem to be saturated with seats available at the moment compared to previous years.

As they are going to be flying it anyway why not apply. If the aircraft is too full to take anybody at Dublin then great - and if not every extra passenger is a bonus.

I wonder if the DUB-IAD flight will pre-clear or just fuel

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18,722 ✭✭✭✭LXFlyer

Given that they only stop in one direction (westbound) I'd imagine that it will remain a "technical" stop.

Doubt there will be pre-clearance - the flights are scheduled to be on the ground from 04:50 to 05:50 for Washington (daily) and 05:00 to 06:00 on TuThSa for Toronto. Too early!

Plus the fact that Ethiopian will use T1 so pre-clearance ain't available there.

Considering that the ADD passengers wouldn't have pre-clearance, wouldnt it make sense that the DUB passengers also cleared in the USA?

No possibility of separating pax on arrival. A non cleared flight must arrive in terminal with CBP while a cleared flight could land into a terminal without CBP. EG, if ORD is closed, all international usually divert to DTW, EI and EY can go to Rockford as they are pre-cleared. (Has been done before)

Also no point in setting up a passenger handling and baggage operation if there's only a handful of passengers, let alone the marketing spend that would be necessary to to try gain a competitive foothold.

Given that the aircraft will only stop in Dublin westbound (the return flights from Washington and Toronto fly non-stop to Addis Ababa), the market would be tiny, unless people want to return to Dublin via Addis Ababa!!

Ethiopian are in Star Alliance, so you could return with any number of airlines via UK/Europe or direct into Dublin with United.

Are there many examples of airlines serving routes in one direction only and selling tickets on them?

Less chance of picking up a slot delay from Dublin. As inbound flights won't get any slot as they are outside Europe. Leaving Dublin there won't be any slot as they are going through irish airspace to the ocean. Whereas Rome flights could/would pick up slots as they have to fly through a lot of European sectors to get to the ocean.

Ethiopian Airlines is planning to boost capacity to North America from late-June 2015, according to recent schedule update. In addition to planned 3 weekly Addis Ababa – Dublin – Los Angeles Boeing 787-8 service from 19JUN15, the Star Alliance member will operate larger aircraft to Washington Dulles from 21JUN15 and Toronto from 01JUL15 (ADD departure). Planned schedule as follow.

Addis Ababa – Washington Boeing 777-300ER replaces -200LR, daily service
    ET500 ADD2230 – 0340+1FCO0440+1 – 0810+1IAD 77W D
    ET501 IAD1100 – 0730+1ADD 77W D

Addis Ababa – Toronto Boeing 777-200LR replaces 787-8, 3 weekly service
    ET502 ADD2240 – 0350+1FCO0450+1 – 0850+1YYZ 77L 135
    ET503 YYZ1120 – 0730+1ADD 77L 246

    Slight change in schedule...

ET 504 Ethiopian Airlines DUB 06:15 LAX 09:15
ET 505 Ethiopian Airlines LAX 00:45 DUB 19:30

The only positives I can see besides the direct service is the early arrival in LAX and the fares which are pretty good.

The negatives - a real early departure meaning no nights sleep especially outside Dublin. No pre clearance in DUB. Anyone use TBIT recently, queues at immigration??

Slight change to sched - ET 505 Ethiopian Airlines LAX 23:45 DUB 18:30

Just wondering has anyone booked? Some good fares in Sept and I am contemplating a visit to LA with ET althought the early departure from Limerick would be a killer.

Travelled from South city to airport yesterday. Saw 5 well sited billboards advertising this new route. "Your dream ticket"
Looks like ET are intent on building a market from Dublin.

Great to see, considering the long running scuttlebutt about possible Air India transit stops.

Dublin confirmed as European hub for Ethiopian Airlines

They're moving their flights that currently route though Rome to Dublin

Someone more informed might tell me why do they even need to stop in Europe?

I know the 787-8 wont do ADD-LAX but their 777 can easily do ADD to East Coast? Why stop?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,648 ✭✭✭✭smurfjed

but their 777 can easily do ADD to East Coast?
Can it? Remember that ADD elevation is 2300 meters and it gets extremely hot...

This is exactly the reason why, hence why they have two 15000ft+ runways.

The runways could be 30,000ft long and they still couldn't do it. At hot and high airfields you can start to get limited by tyre speeds.

No my point is they have 15000ft runways to get the most out of what they have, a hot and high airfield.

    15000ft runways
What about the 2nd segment climb gradient? You will find that is the penalising limitation.

Hopefully they'll be able to pick up passengers for all the routes soon, always good to have transatlantic competition.

Not many people fly one-way... will give a very small amount of extra options for Star Alliance travel and that's about it.

Why one way? Does the return flight not stop in Dublin too? I was under the impression that the LAX route stops both ways :confused:.

LAX route is return. The other flights are only fuel stops on the westbound leg.
