    We're going on Monday...doh!

Open for Dinner Tuesday - Saturday from 6pm

    Hi all,

Thanks for all the suggestions. In the end we went back to Fade Street Social. It was really good again. We shared a Denver Roll of beef - 1 lb cut into strips on the most amazing gravy I've ever tasted. I asked the waiter and he said it takes 2 days to make as they break down the bone marrow. Out of this world. Had it with colcannon which was to die for. The best part of it all though what that Paul Simon was 2 tables down from us!!!

For lunch we went to Salamanca. It's changed ownership and you can tell. The food was great but the staff weren't great. We asked if we could move to a different table to be told that it was being kept. We were there for an hour and there was no sign of anyone. Having said that, Mrs Loire was happy with her pair of cocktails and it made for a nice lunch. (Previously to this, whilst her good self was out shopping, I had a nice, sneaky one in The International!).

Next morning we went to an old haunt of good friends of ours called Cafe Metro. Superb breakfast!

    Loire.

I got a set a few years ago - large casserole - smaller pot and small skillet with non stick coating - and a large non stick griddle (which is crap - )
The large casserole (like you have a pick of ) is what I use all the time- a great heavy base sauce pan-

Yes you can - they're cast iron - anything ferrous (iron and steel ) works on induction !

I got the Tefal cast iron casserole, similar to the one in your pic MissF, with Tesco tokens a few years back. Probably use it about once a month, maybe less, but every time I use it it makes me happy, any dinner coming from it just looks so pretty!

That is perfect timing for me!

Was in Super Valu and saw Shepherds Pie ready made. Now I make my own, but sometimes.....

Anyway, looking at the back it said microwave at blaa blaa, and it was a foil container too.

    Wonder what the story is?

The message on the ones I saw specifically says the container is microwave safe

Only way to find out is to have a lazy dinner soon, and try it out!

I can only envisage sparks and stuff from the mw.

But anyway, on the few occasions I buy ready made (godsend sometimes really, let's be honest), I reheat in the oven where that is the recommended option. And that would certainly be my choice for Sheperd's Pie anyway.

The SV one was a heavy foil container too. But there was no message about it being safe to mw. Just instruction for the mw. Puzzled.

Simple really - dump it out of foil into bowl - nuke it - microwave safe

Contrary to popular belief, it's not having metal in a microwave that causes arcing, but particular metal shapes, especially points. A fork will arc in a microwave much sooner than a spoon will, because of the tines.

The reason you're not supposed to put foil in a microwave is mostly because of the creases it tends to form, which promote arcing. If a microwave ready meal comes in a foil container, then that container has been designed to be microwave safe.

If you're worried, stand by the oven with your finger on the stop button and punch it at the first sign of an arc, but if the instructions say you can microwave it, you almost certainly can.

Further proof that no matter how much you think you know, on the interweb someone always knows more. :D

    This is amazing to me.

I remember making the mistake once of putting a cup in the microwave with a gold trim, obviously made of metallic paint.

I watched as the edges of the cup seemed to dance with little tiny tongues of fire.

Then there was the time I absent mindedly put butter and its foil wrapper in the microwave to soften. Now that one just burst right into flames.

I remember many years ago when my mother was reheating a plate of chicken rendang and after a couple of minutes the exposed bit of drumstick bone just burst into flames. Can anyone explain why this happened? Bone got too hot?

I melted some butter in a plastic container recently, using the microwave. It started to kick off. Ordinarily it's fine the dishwasher, so I thought it'd be alright in the microwave.

Bit of foil stuck to the butter?

Don't think so. Usually have a slab of butter in tray with a cover. Took a chunk off and put it in the plastic tub. Tried a ramekin after the tub starting getting fired up.

Right, who is going to try the microwave safe ready meal in the foil tray in the MW?

This happened to me, upon examination I found a minute piece of foil.

I'll try it tomorrow, take pics of the label and report back

If I haven't reported back by 9pm please ring 999 reporting that Steno is most likely dead?

    actually i lost patience.

I examined the label carefully and it said microwaveable container, remove plastic

I've just had one of the ready meals in the microwave in the apparent foil container for four minutes and it's fine

I'm gobsmacked. I once destroyed a microwave putting butter with foil in

I've pictures of the label saying microwave safe container

    Probably. Microwaves are kinda weird:

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 14,949 ✭✭✭✭IvyTheTerrible

I have a vague recollection of reading something that said it's the older microwaves that are more affected by arcing, while the new ones do it less. I'll have to get googling...

I had the most delicious soup earlier. Both my sister and I agreed it was the most delicious soup we've ever tasted. My daughter soaked it up too. It was Roasted Pumpkin, Sweet Potato and Leek favour with a Rocket, Almond, Parmesan crumble. I'd love to give it a try at home and I'm wracking my brains where to begin. Any ideas welcome?? :)
