I love those tinned peas. The only peas I'll eat. So delicious with buttery mash and steak. Mmmm. Hungry now.

Oh god, I hate taking those so I once tried swallowing one with a big gulp of water in the back of a French class. It got stuck in my throat and and I ended up with a fizzy nose, crying and pathetically pointing at my throat going GLLLARRGH while a teacher had a mini panic attack thinking I was having some sort of fit.

    Never. Again.

I found non soak marrowfat peas in Aldi. Only about 50 cents a pack, done in 20 mins. Beautiful.

    I don't like marzipan.
Have you, or any of the other marzipan haters, ever had one you liked? or made one yourself without any essence?

I hate marzipan, but it makes no sense, since I love almonds & sugary things. I was posting before about the chemical essence they typically add and I figure that is what I really hate. I have not tasted many since I preusme I will hate it but would like to try and make some, just a tiny batch even.

I don't think you can just check packs ingredients for essence either since I think they do not have to list ingredients below a certain % so they can leave it off as it could be in tiny amounts.

I'm surprised dried marrowfats are still popular, thought tins would have taken over. There was some tv chef on the other day doing dried ones and didn't even mentioned that tinned as an alternative.

It's the essence I hate too Rubadub. Can't be doing with marzipan, almond syrup, cakes tainted with almond essence etc. Actual almonds are lovely, I have some in my bag, I'm not sure how they turn into something so foul. I suspect evil is afoot...

It's the same with banana. Bananas are fine, banana flavoured anything is rank.

You have a point there, rubabdub. I've eaten marzipan in cakes from a quality bakers & considered it OK. It is the regular cheap muck that I can't stand.

Marrowfat peas on the other hand - just gank! I sincerely doubt that anything could be done to make them palatable to me.

Just canned 5KG of Red Peppers, that's what you get with a Polish wife :)
    Mountains of Canned bolognese :)

I love marzipan, but I've been sick recently and the medicine has this awful almondy taste off it, and now the thought of almonds make me nauseous...so maybe I won't be able to eat marzipan any more!

Her Indoors maintains that you simply can't buy real marzipan in Ireland, which is a crying shame because it's a staple of Danish cooking. We always stock up on the real thing whenever we visit. There's just no comparison.

Hate marzipan too but I love almond butter like you'd get in an almond croissant.

Just booked myself a week in Berlin in July. Restaurant recommendations please!! :)

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,057 ✭✭✭MissFlitworth

Not a restaurant exactly Mystery Egg but Street Food Thursday in Markthalle Neun is v. v. v. much worth a visit. Or at least, it's supposed to be. The last time I was in Berlin I stupidly booked a flight leaving on Thursday morning and missed out.

If you're on Instagram berlinfoodstories, berlinfoodguide & berlinburgerguide are worth a follow. Although berlinburgerguide hasn't posted in weeks. (Burgers are a serious big deal in Berlin!) BerlinBuns on Facebook & Twitter are great for burger recommendations.

Again I haven't been here but Dudes Delikatessen is somewhere I'll be going when I go back later this year

Oh! Also, if you like Dim Sum, Yumcha Heroes was wonderful when I was there.

<3 Berlin. Definitely getting back there this year!

Also, a bratwurst-in-brotchen at any sausage stand you see. And a side of pommes.

+1 to Berlin, it's an amazing city!

It's a shoestring holiday - we got an amazing deal - we're renting a 'deluxe studio' at Citadines aparthotel in a great central location for very little - around €60 a night - so we have a comfy ensuite room with a little kitchenette for making our own breakfasts before we head out exploring in the morning. We'll probably do lunch out every day and a 'special' dinner out a couple of times, and otherwise enjoy cooking our own simple meals from the local supermarkets. I cannot wait.

We were going to do air bnb but the flats we fancied (and in budget) weren't available on our dates. In a way though, although they lack character, I prefer the security of an aparthotel instead of being at the whims of an unregulated individual.

I love airbnb but I had a 'funny' experience in Germany with one where the host slated me afterwards for using her coffee and 'leaving the place like I thought I was in a hotel' (I think because I left towels in the bath) and wrapped up her review saying that 'she had probably just been extremely lucky with guests in the past'. After that I'm funny about using it in Germany in case I annoy someone again accidentally, I had forgotten about how particular Germans can be. So thumbs up to the Aparthotel!

Another thing to love about Berlin is that it's as cheap as chips if you want it to be. Especially for breakfast and sparkly wine (not necessarily at the same time :D )

Mmmm, Currywurst. And that yellow powder they put on the chips, kinda like Aromat but nicer.
