I find TOTP from the disco era quite challenging.

Dance to the music like nobody does...

    Dance yourself dizzy...

Dance the f*** out of here. Eejits.

    Disco Hank Marvin again.

Dark times. I'm going to youtube.

As for the green satin shorts and tie and hair flicking, so glad I was too young to remember the bands (and to my shame I actually remember that woeful song :( )

And that business with the keyboard painted on him.

Sweet baby jesus that was rubbish.

Dance away the heartache, dance away the tears... :o:o:D:D;)

I know it's not disco, but Bryan Ferry and his band were big at this time.

I'd still rather hear John Lennon singing "Jealous Guy", though.

Watching the Agnetha/Abba documentary for about the 10th time, and I'll never tire of it.

They have to be up there as one of the best (if cheesiest) bands ever.

    Well look at this.

When i got up this morning I was not expecting the day to bring my new least favourite thing ever.

Congratulations to this Liquid Gold crap.

It's the worst thing I've ever seen. Ever.

Yeah, it wasn't just bad it was weird and a bit creepy. And they are on again this week :( ...

    Thursday

7.30pm & Midnight Top of The Pops 1980
Steve Wright presents an edition first broadcast March 13, 1980, with performances by the Dooleys, the Police, Detroit Spinners, Brothers Johnson, Secret Affair, Liquid Gold, the Vapors, Rainbow, Siouxsie & the Banshees, the Gibson Brothers, Peter Gabriel, Marti Webb, Genesis and Fern Kinney. Plus, dance sequences by Legs & Co

    Friday

    7pm Sounds of The Sixties
Celebration of the supergroups and guitar heroes to emerge toward the end of the decade, including Pink Floyd, the Rolling Stones, Fleetwood Mac and Jimi Hendrix. Last in the series

Then after Mozart, it's a nice bit of Soul for your Friday night ...

9pm & 1am Northern Soul: Living for the Weekend
A look at the rise, fall and rebirth of the music and dance movement that took place across the north of England during the 1970s. Archive footage and vivid first-hand accounts reveal the dynamic culture of fashions, dance moves and musical obsessions that were all fuelled by a unique style of black American soul music based on heavy beats. With contributions by Richard Searling, Ian Levine, Colin Kurtis, Kev Roberts, Pete Waterman, Peter Stringfellow and others

I thought that was decent enough, but I preferred the similar Doc which Paul Mason did. He is wasted reporting on Economics for Channel 4 ...

Anyway, after the Northern Soul it's back to Motown (covers) ...

    10pm & 2am Sings Motown
A compilation of Motown covers from the archive, spanning the 1960s to the present. Including Paul Weller and Amy Winehouse's I Heard It Through the Grapevine, Roberta Flack's version of Stevie Wonder's Never Dreamed You'd Leave in Summer, the Flying Lizards with Barrett Strong's Money (That's What I Want), Dusty Springfield performing Nowhere to Run and Kim Wilde's take on You Keep Me Hanging On

    then another compilation, looks decent

    11pm & 3am Queens of Soul
A compilation of archive footage to celebrate the critically-acclaimed female singers whose voices have come to define the soul genre, including Aretha Franklin, Roberta Flack, Gladys Knight, Randy Crawford, Angie Stone, Mary J Blige and Beyonce

and if it's Lionel Richie you're looking for, you are in luck!

Midnight Lionel Richie - Dancing on The Ceiling
Profile of the soul singer, who found fame in the 1970s as frontman of the Commodores. The programme looks at his departure from the band in 1982 and subsequent international success as a solo artist. With contributions by Kenny Rogers, Lemar, Motown songwriter and producer Gloria Jones and video director Bob Giraldi

I'll dip into those programmes, but if that's not your thing you might like 90 minute long Frank Sinatra: The Voice of The Century on Saturday at 10.55pm. TOTP 1980 follows at 12.25.

Music film of the weekend is probably What's Love Got To Do With It? on Film Four on Sunday at 11.10pm

That's about it, Oasis and Nirvana on Sky Arts on Saturday if you have it

Don't forget to put your clocks forward on Saturday Night!

I adore that doc - it's so rare to see a film made with such love for its subject.

'81 was also the year when a certain Phil Lynott song became the theme tune. ;);)

Could do with more Lionel in this, they only have bits of an old Parkinson chat.

He always seemed like a nice bloke with plenty of good songs. And he layed a good carpet too, by all accounts.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

Easy like the best tune ever, more like.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,749 ✭✭✭✭grey_so_what

True Skid, they could just play a few of his videos instead of everyone else singing them!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 19,779 ✭✭✭✭Ol' Donie

And who doesn't want to hear what Lemar has to say about songwriting?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I didnt know he wrote that Kenny Rogers song ... but it does sound like one of his.

    Very nice.

I always listen weekday afternoons - Radcliffe and Maconie, followed by Steve Lamacq. Good stuff :)

Crazy to think the station was nearly canned a year or two ago.

Yeah, it's a great station. You could dip in at anytime and fine some terrific music.

On the days when I'm just sitting around the house I like to listen to Lauren Laverne's show. Although I make a detour to Radio 2 at 10.30am for Popmaster with Ken Bruce :)
