Did ya ever hear the likes, to a primary school class no less - though nothing they say surprises me these days

"A Catholic priest has reportedly told a primary school mass in Melbourne that Jill Meagher would not have been murdered if she had not been out so late at night."....(holding up a picture of Bayley)

"the priest to tell the group that if Ms Meagher had been "more faith-filled", she "would have been home in bed and not walking down Sydney Road at 3am"." (Infact it was 01.30am not that it matters)

Suppose they've apologised so that's ok then :mad:

    Did you now?
May I remind you of the oft-quoted Father Ted Priest Study of the late 90's

But in fairness he's not wrong. Techically if she wasn't out she wouldn't have died.

Very insensitive comments but I'd be more angry he said it to a group of children. What kind of message is that to give a child?

    Good advice.

We all too readily forget that rapists, murderers and twisted sickos have hours of operation and codes of conduct that are rigidly adhered to.

A friend of mine in America said she once seen two guys try rape a woman on a bus in the middle of the day.

On Crimewatch a couple of weeks ago it showed footage of an old pervert exposing himself to a child in a toy store.

In Laois a few weeks ago a sex offender tried to abduct a little girl only the braveness of her younger brother to not let go of the car door she was able to escape.

Crime can happen at any time of the day.

Catholic church is famous for protecting people like this.

If you want to get all technical on it, even if she hadn't been out she would have died eventually. Pertinent point is that he felt it more appropriate to emphasise to a group of children the lack of faith that she apparently had and which was the cause of her death, over any lack of faith that a violent rapist and murderer had. Were one in the mood one could argue that it was he who was responsible for her death, and that a priest might be presumed to have more of a moral problem with rape and murder than being out late at night.

Another thing to add can we please just drop it. The mans an idiot with the typical RCC mentality of always blaming the victims. Out of respect to Jill and her friends and family can we please not have another thread going over and over what happened.

And if you think that is exclusive to the RCC? One look at the Irish judicial system should hopefully enlighten you.

I'm just waiting for a drive-by post from one of the usual suspects, the sort of ultramontanist who's offended when others are offended by something like that "Sounds of Sodomy" leaflet.

While I don't agree with what he said, I do think that a lot of women (and men) I know put themselves in very unsafe situations. I used to live on Aungier St in town and if I was out socialising on Harcourt St, I would still take a taxi home. Taxi drivers would get thick that it was only around the corner but I didn't care. I would never walk home on my own late at night. I am going to drill this message into my daughter when she gets older. You can never be too careful and there are far too many opportunistics out there who are only too willing to take advantage if they got half a chance.

And of course taxi drivers have never raped any of their clients.

You just don't know when someone is going to do something like this, it could be at 3am, it could be at 3pm, it could be someone that is a nutter or someone ostensibly incredibly trustworthy. Not so long ago in the UK there was a cancer doctor jailed for abusing dozens of children that were in his care, it's not always the scumbags who do this stuff.

We are supposed to believe that they never had one in their lives ? If they didn't their scrotums would be like giant inflatable balloons.

this makes it sound that rape is a crime of opportunity- that there are loads of guys out there that would rape, if they had the chance. That's crazy. Women shouldn't be constantly worried that they will get raped - it's very sad that they do, and the fault of the rapists but also societies that have allowed rapists to carry on by covering their crimes etc. In fact most guys would never think about raping someone. A minority obviously have something wrong with them, but while a reasonable amount of vigilance is just a common sense way to be, living with a huge weight of fear is no way to be. As a society we should evolve beyond that and create a society where women don't have to be fearful.

In my opinion the most important lesson to teach one's children is respect for other people, maybe that would reduce the number of rapes. Women always being paranoid and on the lookout might stop a minority of rapes but most rapes aren't the kind you are portraying in your post.

    Well, he apologised, sort of.
“I take [the ‘idiotic’ comment] no problem, I am humble.

“When I came to know she was a nice Irish Catholic I felt very sad about the comment,” he added.

Implying of course, if she wasn't a nice Irish Catholic, then he meant what he said, and she deserved it for not being at home in bed.

    Jesus wept.

    Jesus wept.

    He completely apologised:
“I am very remorseful it came out like that, I am very apologetic and I ask for pardon, I apologise sincerely, especially to all the Irish people and especially to all those for whom Jill Meagher has been and is so dear,” Fr Joseph told RTE Radio One’s John Murray show.

And that's from the article you quoted.
