Strange like they thought you'd like it.

If 3 men did this to a woman they'd be locked up for a very long time and rightly so.

If 3 men did this to a woman and got the sentences these woman did there would be a Facebook campaign and general social media generated outrage.

    Something like that.

As for the thread. Drop all references to the sex of the perpetrators... or the victim........ and then tell me were the perpetrators sentenced in proportional relation to the crime they committed.

Seems to me there is nothing more worth discussing than that, oder?

    Me arse !

Impose equal rights here, if 3 blokes tied up a woman like that they would all be in jail for a very long time.

Just because its 3 woman doing this to one guy it shouldn't be any different.
The problem is that in the eyes of the law, women are invariably victims, any feminist would be appalled at this sentencing

While many women and men who classify themselves as feminists would be rightly appalled I think its safe to say that there's a significant cadre of advocates who would not only applaud the sentences but who are actively working to portray women who commit crimes as the invariable victims of society, with no agency of their own. I'm thinking for example of Ivana Bacik, who actively advocated a different and less severe treatment of women criminals, or the WAR group, who think its inappropriate to prosecute a woman for perverting the course of justice.

    Horrible, horrible event.

But, damn, I wouldn't mind writing that scene. It's so crazy that you can't help but be curious at what's going on in their head.

Well you know what they say, if you poke the fire long enough you're bound to get burnt.
Not exactly sympathetic to the victim? He had it coming? Would you say the same about a woman in the same circumstances?

There's nothing insane about it, this sentence perfectly reflects societal values towards sexual and gender based violence. I saw a video on some experiment in the U.S. where a major network had actors pretend to be a man abusing his partner and then the reverse, guess which got the most attention from bystanders?

3 men do something similar when they find the girl they were dating cheating on them. They flog her, cut her hair and burn her breasts with cigarettes. Would they get community service!? F*cking joke of a sentence.

Horrific. :( Hot curling tongs are really painful to touch off your fingers, can't imagine the pain of them in a more sensitive, nervy area.

It's completely indefensible that custodial sentences weren't handed down.

Found it strange how the man's age was never mentioned in any of the articles on this but from reading another article on it from last year, turns out the man was in fact just 18 years old at the time. Makes the lack of a custodial sentence all the more incredible.

What does it say about a society that would allow three grown women who subjected an 18 year old to a beating and sexual torture, walk free? Sure gives sentences like this one an interesting context.

Sure lads equal rights and gender equality are only for women remember?

Joke of a sentence, those 3 cnuts should be doing time!

They should of course be serving jail sentences. If you actually read the article though there isn't really a gender disparity in the sentences given*. The man wouldn't have served a custodial either if he didn't have previous convictions for assault. He didn't actually receive 12 months inside for this incident, he received it for this incident which was plead down to ABH, a burglary he committed while on bail for this incident and for handling stolen goods.

Can't even really blame the courts entirely. The CPS should have never accepted plea downs to ABH for a false imprisonment and what must have passed the threshold for GBH. Assuming he serves half which is what will happen unless he commits further crimes while inside, he will have served 1 month more than the woman that the courts and CPS decided was the worst offender, as she served 5 months inside on remand.

*NB. This doesn't mean that if 3 men and a woman had dome the same to a woman they wouldn't have received bigger sentences, which I'm sure they would have.

The amount of women on FB saying "well done he deserved it" is unreal.

I doubt they would like to have the box burned if they were caught cheating or see it as a fitting punishment.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 8,635 ✭✭✭Pumpkinseeds

Jesus, what an appalling lack of justice. They planned a vicious assault on a man and essentially got away with it. I hope the ruling is appealed and that a real sentence is imposed on those women.

I'm seeing the lack of empathy myself from many women on this issue.

They certainly should, but it less to do with gender than judges and sentencing guidelines. Let's not pretend that stupid sentences aren't handed down for sexual offences against women by men too.

We've had suspended sentences or fines as sentences against rapists and child molesters -even those who plead guilding to abusing children for decades - in Ireland. I don't blame that on gender inequality, I blame that on the same issue - judges and sentencing guidelines.

    Wrong.

It does amaze me how people can dispute that men are treated more harshly than women in courts for the same crimes.

Read it again. I said it has LESS to do with gender, I didn't say it had nothing to do with it.

It's ALL to do with it.

If thats the case, then explain why do so many terrible crimes result in a suspended sentence or a fine? How is it okay to take into account a persons reception at their golf club as a mitigating factor? Yet it happens, but I won't say it only happens because the perpetrator was male, although undoubtedly that is part of it.

It's fine to acknowledge one injustice, but stupid to dismiss all other aspects of a failing judicial system.

Reducing everything to gender might be good for pushing an agenda, but for real change to occur you have to take off the blinkers. The system is broken, it needs fixing. Gender is one aspect but it's not the entire picture and insisting it is doesn't address the bigger picture.
