We had a vote on keeping the playpen for failed politicians or getting rid of it.

None of the parties wanted to disband it so they proposed a referendum that replaced one bad option with another. It wasnt a referendum that proposed to reform the seanaid, which is what was required

We had a vote on keeping the playpen for failed politicians or getting rid of it.

The choice was essentially to keep it and hope that it's one day modernized and made fit for purpose, or to give the self-serving boyos in the Dail even more reach and power.

I went with the former and don't regret my decision even in spite of the likes of Healy-Eames being in there wasting oxygen and a seat.

She doesn't strike me as very bright.

    That's an understatement.

I think its shocking that the unemployment rate is still over 10% and she has a job. An important one at that.

this sort of stuff doesn't surprise me, given she's one of Lucinda's pals.

and it's still not as bad as when she said games consoles should a chip installed to have them automatically shut down after two hours

That's the one who had her car seized for no tax, tried to take a free ride on the Galway train and had a problem paying the plumber. Has she joined the RIP yet.

Mothers day banned...when you hear ads saying about taking your mother out for a meal or doing something nice for her, it is kinda sad when your mother is not alive and is six feet under...
There is never talk about people whose mother is not around on mothers day...
That is something far bigger on a day like today...

A lot of parents would agree with that, to be fair.

My own view is that FHM is gaffe-prone by her nature. But the personal attacks on her are nasty, and uncomfortable to read. I'm not talking about well-intentioned and intelligent piss-taking, like that parody video posted earlier. I'm talking about attacks on her intelligence, or sexist comments, or snide jibes at her family.

We need to distinguish gaffes from stupidity; genuine concern from scurrilous invective. I think FHM has shown that she is genuinely passionate about child welfare and improving the lives of children, even if her outlook is misguided. That's something that can be parodied, or debated rigorously, but they personal attacks go too far IMO.

This doesn't just apply to FHM obviously. MLOD gets it as well, for example. People on the internet sometimes just have this devious tendency towards attacking others in semi-anonymity.

    .

Perhaps they could then maybe take an interest in what their children are doing and turn it off manually. If children are spending too long on video games then the problem is with the parenting not with technology

I think it is entirely appropriate to question the intelligence of a public representative who makes statements intended to influence the debate on a referendum, when those statements are, intentionally or unintentionally, factually incorrect and who does not withdraw it when proven incorrect. And the use of the hashtag #justsaying? Is that the intellectual level of debate we should reasonably expect from someone in public office?

You respond to incorrect claims with countervailing evidence. Not by hiding behind an avatar and telling someone they are stupid. I understand this is an unpopular thing to say, because it gives a small number of people a kick, and nobody likes being denied their kicks.

I just can't imagine being at a meeting or any physical gathering, where someone would have the nerve to walk up to someone with whom they disagreed, and pass sexist remarks, or tell that person how stupid they are to their face. I mean they might do it, but it would be excruciatingly uncomfortable for most people to witness, and would be considered utterly inappropriate. On twitter or boards, it is usually seen as valid.

What she said was both stupid and ill-informed

She should have had the grace to apologise for the lies she told earlier.
Lying not my thing. No slur intended either. #justsaying Mother's Day banned in a NY & Nova Scotia school. Happy Mothers Day!

No. Thats not what you were just saying! Such sh!te you have to listen to in Irish politics. An embarrassment

I never mentioned her family, but I stand by my comments regarding her intelligence.

I'm not the cleverest of people myself, but (most of the time) I consider what I'm saying because of that. I'm not in public office either, but she is, and by extension is in a place where she can easily influence public opinion.. yet it has never stopped her from failing to think before she speaks.

I hope I didn't come across as sexist by calling her a geebag in my OP. I'd have used the same word if it were a male senator making such asinine comments!

You're the second person to mention this in defence of personal attacks.

So what if she's in public office? Does that make her a legitimate target? Why is it never sufficient simply to disprove someone, or even parody and satirize their comments? Why do people have to go too far, and hurl abuse?

I'm not responding solely to the comments on this thread demanding that she is stupid. I've seen comments elsewhere that she should dive off a cliff; comments were also posted about 'her poor children'. Like, would you really say these things to a person's face?

My local TD is fairly well known for his gaffes, but anytime he calls around canvassing, he gets a cup of tea, a few biccies, and the piss extracted. He's a nice guy, and fairly smart, but again, a bit misguided.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this rant. I don't expect people to agree with it. But i'm sure I'm not the only one who reads these threads, or the #vinb hashtag, and feels a little uncomfortable about how many users of social media feel unrestrained in emitting pure venom.

One of the things I like about living in Ireland is that we tend to be respectful of those with whom we disagree. It's part of living on a small island. If we can't get along and find common ground, we're fcuked. Personally i think it would be a shame to see that change.

Thank you people of Ireland for voting to keep her in a job.

The people of Galway have rejected her in the last three general elections. If she runs again it'll be as an independent as even Fine Gael are sick of her. She's an embarrassment to the county but we can proudly say she was never elected.

She has been parodied, and had her statements of 'fact' disproven numerous times already.. yet she continues to mislead people, be it by design or by happenstance.

It matters a great deal that she's in public office. She is in a position to both influence opinion and has a say in laws that affect us all.

There's a very fine line between abuse and legitimate criticism. Calling her opinions stupid, or she an idiot after making numerous stupid and demonstrably untrue comments isn't abuse. If anything she's abusing her bestowed position by continuing to do the same and then moaning about getting called up on it.

What should people do exactly when such a person comes out with such crap? There's only so much that a YouTube parody can accomplish.

Saying that she should jump off a cliff, or attacking her family is obviously overstepping the mark when it comes to criticism, but it hasn't happened here so it's also a moot point and a bit of a red herring.

She's a shameless publicity whore. She used Mothers day as an opportunity for media exposure and she got it, I doubt she cares whether or not her views were popular. While most of us think her views are ridiculous, they will be warmly received by the anti-SSM supporters.

Not what I am referring to. Of course it matters that she is in public office. That's why her claims should be subject to scrutiny, correction or satire.

I asked why her role in public office should be an excuse for personal attacks.

When it comes to bad information, or spurious claims, nothing is more lethal than bald facts which invalidate those claims, or satire which converts those claims into farce. Some people can do facts and satire very well, and unfortunately, others just resort to personal attacks.

Would they? I don't think they would. Think about it for 10 seconds to realise how stupid it is. It's the most idiotic idea any politician in ireland has come up with.
She wanted a 2 hour limit for consoles then for them to shut down. Now, imagine you wanted to watch a dvd or netflix? Nothing longer than 2 hours. Imagine you had a patch to download which took an hour? Tough shíte. But a pc is fine, or sitting on your arse watching TV all day is fine. Its just those video games. Phones are fine too btw.

She claimed that allowing same-sex marriage could lead to the banning of Mother's Day. She deserves to have abuse and invective heaped upon her; she posted something completely untrue in an effort to undermine the extending of equal marriage rights to gay and lesbian couples. When she was called out on it, she doubled down even as she was admitting no US states had banned Mother's Day. There are politicians who don't deserve the abuse that's heaped on them, but Fidelma Healy Eames is happy to make things up to undermine marriage equality; she really does deserve it.

Given the rabidness of the PC Brigade and the social upheaval by their rejection of traditional morality/customs has engendered within the US, then the OP can be thanked for envisioning what what Ireland's future holds.
