Happy Mothers' day all! Hope we can continue to celebrate it after #SSM passed. In some US states Mothers & Father's Day banned #pcgonemad

She then clarified what she meant.

Lying not my thing. No slur intended either. #justsaying Mother's Day banned in a NY & Nova Scotia school. Happy Mothers Day!

So it went from 'some US states', to 2 schools, one of which isn't even in the US!

Seriously, how stupid is this geebag?

Someone needs to tell her to stay the feck off Twitter!

Well, Mothers day cost me a small fortune, for what is essentially a made up day, so I wouldn't mind seeing an end to it:D, But seriously, surely parenting is what's important and the quality of parenting, not the gender of the parent? There are many appalling mothers in the world and frankly their kids would be much better off without them. Anybody who makes the grade for adoption/fostering should be entitled to do so, regardless of their sexual orientation.

This must be the school she's on about.

Parents whose kids attend a pricey Manhattan private school are in an uproar over a new policy aimed at protecting the feelings of children raised by same-sex couples: Mother's Day has been banned. And in the interest of fairness, Father's Day, too

The reasoning was several-fold," Samson said. "One is, it didn't serve an academic and educational need. Number two, families are changing. Some children were very uncomfortable."

The most disturbing thing is that people retweeted that. Its funny how she see SSM as morally wrong, but there is this gem on her wikipedia page

A car belonging to Healy Eames was seized in Galway city on 2 July 2012 for failure to display a valid car disc. She told the Galway Advertiser: “I was using public transport up and down to Dublin and I had neglected the car tax. There is no excuse. I was completely in the wrong”.[9] Healy Eames was then fined for boarding the Galway-Dublin train without a ticket on 12 July 2012, 10 days after her car was seized.[10][11] She was convicted and fined €1,850 for the motor tax offence.[12][5][13]

    Ah yes, I remember that.

She used the infamous 'do you know who I am?' line too on that occasion.

    I'm gay myself but apparently one school has already done this;

    http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865581793/Parents-rally-after-Canadian-elementary-school-bans-Mothers-Day-and-Fathers-Day-celebrations.html?pg=all

It's absurd. If we're going to live in a diverse society then we should be able to embrace the diversity, not make it taboo. Yes there'll be kids with only one parent (that's life), or kids with two same-sex parents but there's nothing intrinsically negative about having a Mother's/Father's day.

I really hope this doesn't catch on but some do-gooders will probably try.

It's pointless anyway. I mean it's not as if kids and teachers do be high-fiving each other between lessons in celebration of Mother's Day!

We had a vote on keeping the playpen for failed politicians or getting rid of it.

I have heard of schools choosing not to acknowledge Mother's Day or Father's Day, but for the sake of children who may have lost one or both of their parents; nothing at all to do with SSM. But shur, it's much easier to blame the pinko bleeding heart liberal PC gay agenda!

One day I sincerely hope Fidelma Healy Eames comes out as being an actress, and she's actually a genius satiricial creation as opposed to the worryingly ignorant and unpleasant individual that she comes across as.

Not really the same as voting her in though. You could agree with keeping the Senate but wanting rid of this particular bint.

We had a vote on keeping the playpen for failed politicians or getting rid of it.

None of the parties wanted to disband it so they proposed a referendum that replaced one bad option with another. It wasnt a referendum that proposed to reform the seanaid, which is what was required

We had a vote on keeping the playpen for failed politicians or getting rid of it.

The choice was essentially to keep it and hope that it's one day modernized and made fit for purpose, or to give the self-serving boyos in the Dail even more reach and power.

I went with the former and don't regret my decision even in spite of the likes of Healy-Eames being in there wasting oxygen and a seat.

Mothers day banned...when you hear ads saying about taking your mother out for a meal or doing something nice for her, it is kinda sad when your mother is not alive and is six feet under...
There is never talk about people whose mother is not around on mothers day...
That is something far bigger on a day like today...

A lot of parents would agree with that, to be fair.

My own view is that FHM is gaffe-prone by her nature. But the personal attacks on her are nasty, and uncomfortable to read. I'm not talking about well-intentioned and intelligent piss-taking, like that parody video posted earlier. I'm talking about attacks on her intelligence, or sexist comments, or snide jibes at her family.

We need to distinguish gaffes from stupidity; genuine concern from scurrilous invective. I think FHM has shown that she is genuinely passionate about child welfare and improving the lives of children, even if her outlook is misguided. That's something that can be parodied, or debated rigorously, but they personal attacks go too far IMO.

This doesn't just apply to FHM obviously. MLOD gets it as well, for example. People on the internet sometimes just have this devious tendency towards attacking others in semi-anonymity.

    .

Perhaps they could then maybe take an interest in what their children are doing and turn it off manually. If children are spending too long on video games then the problem is with the parenting not with technology

I think it is entirely appropriate to question the intelligence of a public representative who makes statements intended to influence the debate on a referendum, when those statements are, intentionally or unintentionally, factually incorrect and who does not withdraw it when proven incorrect. And the use of the hashtag #justsaying? Is that the intellectual level of debate we should reasonably expect from someone in public office?

You respond to incorrect claims with countervailing evidence. Not by hiding behind an avatar and telling someone they are stupid. I understand this is an unpopular thing to say, because it gives a small number of people a kick, and nobody likes being denied their kicks.

I just can't imagine being at a meeting or any physical gathering, where someone would have the nerve to walk up to someone with whom they disagreed, and pass sexist remarks, or tell that person how stupid they are to their face. I mean they might do it, but it would be excruciatingly uncomfortable for most people to witness, and would be considered utterly inappropriate. On twitter or boards, it is usually seen as valid.

I never mentioned her family, but I stand by my comments regarding her intelligence.

I'm not the cleverest of people myself, but (most of the time) I consider what I'm saying because of that. I'm not in public office either, but she is, and by extension is in a place where she can easily influence public opinion.. yet it has never stopped her from failing to think before she speaks.

I hope I didn't come across as sexist by calling her a geebag in my OP. I'd have used the same word if it were a male senator making such asinine comments!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,328 ✭✭✭conorh91

I'm not in public office either, but she is
You're the second person to mention this in defence of personal attacks.

So what if she's in public office? Does that make her a legitimate target? Why is it never sufficient simply to disprove someone, or even parody and satirize their comments? Why do people have to go too far, and hurl abuse?

I'm not responding solely to the comments on this thread demanding that she is stupid. I've seen comments elsewhere that she should dive off a cliff; comments were also posted about 'her poor children'. Like, would you really say these things to a person's face?

My local TD is fairly well known for his gaffes, but anytime he calls around canvassing, he gets a cup of tea, a few biccies, and the piss extracted. He's a nice guy, and fairly smart, but again, a bit misguided.

I'm not sure where I'm going with this rant. I don't expect people to agree with it. But i'm sure I'm not the only one who reads these threads, or the #vinb hashtag, and feels a little uncomfortable about how many users of social media feel unrestrained in emitting pure venom.

One of the things I like about living in Ireland is that we tend to be respectful of those with whom we disagree. It's part of living on a small island. If we can't get along and find common ground, we're fcuked. Personally i think it would be a shame to see that change.
