I once saw six foxes in a lambing field together, I will disagree, an M60 would have been useful

And illegal already as I see in my attempt at an education on the shooting forum

Hard lines for the lamb, no law looking out for them!

Heavy calibre automatic centre fire rifles have no practical application in agriculture for vermin control, target or sport.

    :confused::confused::confused::confused::confused::confused:

I can't get anyone to give a proper explanation anyway

Maybe some of the lads on the shooting forum can tell us more, but what exactly is heavy calibre, .243? I know sfa about rifles, but a farmer would have a fair job convincing a guard that he needed anything bigger than a .22 for shooting crows around the yard, foxes are a different story though. The whole licencing thing is way out of control, different areas have different standards. Have a look over on the shooting forum.

I don't know if there is a definition for it, but in NRA Silhouette shooting, high power rifle was classed as any caliber over 6mm.

There's no legal definition of "heavy calibre". Never has been.

Also, automatic firearms are banned europe-wide under EU law (section 6 of 91/477/EEC for anyone who's interested). You just can't get the things in Ireland.

I think they are classing centre fire bullets as "heavy calibre". If this is correct they are siding with the gardai. Gardai want rid of them. Garda are trying to say they only have military applications or military appearance. I have had sheep attacked by a certain ethnic minority's lurcher. Hit it with a 22 three times after along chase. Didn't stop it. Got a centrefire, end of story

I would have considered anything over 375 Holland Holland to be a heavier calibre.
    Heavy would be .50

"Heavy calibre" or my personal favourite "High powered rifle" are all media terms for anything above a catapult.

3 times? Just randomly shooting at it huh?
We'll placed shot to the head and it'd have been game over.

Some statement to make not knowing the circumstances.

    How is it?
He said 3 shots with .22 and it didn't drop.

Dog may never have stopped for breath, terrain, weather, lots of things. Sniping from the long grass not knowing the situation is pointless.

    Ok that's True. My Apologies.
If the dog didn't stop for breath meaning he was moving then it shouldn't of wen shot with a rifle. Shooting a moving target with a rifle is highly dangerous.
Miss and that bullet will travel.

Dog in with my sheep and I'll keep shooting until the ****er stops, be it hmr, shotgun or 223. They'll all still be safe shots, perhaps not accurate, but I'll stop him.

To get an effective shot with a 22 rim fire you would need to get to approx 50 metres of the dog - not very easy as they don't tend to sit still until you come into range.
A centerfire will enable a killing shot at a couple of hundred metres, a lot more attainable!

Ever seen a dog chasing sheep? And better so ever tried to shoot a dog chasing sheep? They don't stop and wait to be shot. If had to shoot a dog on the run before after sheep, perfectly safe when I did it as there were backstops all round

Place your shot well after running across a ploughed field in the rain with wellies on chasing a lurcher carrying a rifle? Do you think you would get you head shot then?? Maybe your "well placed shot to the head" belongs in video games or lying prone shooting targets

And to clear up any more nonsense, the lurcher escaped on the day it was struck three times with the 22. It was the next week and about five or six lambs later that I got to flatten it with a swift centrefire.

An awful mess, article is right, it's a slippery slope with the Gardaí. Once they get to ban one type of gun they'll keep at it until they get the rest. I could guess who is driving it, but rather not leave myself open. The correct laws need to be drafted and enforce to lock up career criminals, not this revolving door policy BS. I'd go much farther than that, basic respect for people needs to become the norm.

If they ban one gun and get away with it they'll see no problem in banning others.
There are much worse things to deal with in this country than types of guns that are legally owned.
More people are probably killed each year by kicks in the head than a stray bullet, accidental shot etc.
