    No view but if you like roasts then Sunday Roast in the Exchequer can be lovely. Full disclosure: The service when I have been there has always been a bit aggravating and rubbish but the food has made up for it (I would go just for the sausage stuffing). Oh and the crispy, fresh vegetables. They bring a whole roast joint/chicken/whatever you order & the sides to your table and you carve and serve yourself. You need to order your roast by Friday at the latest

    Malahide is packed with nice restaurants, and handy for a nice walk on the beach afterwards. The Grand Hotel do a lovely Sunday lunch if you fancy a roast, there's Giovanni's Italian and also That's Amore (I haven't been to that one). I love The Greedy Goose, their menu is made up entirely of starter sized portions and there's a huge variety to choose from.

    Any suggestions for a nice restaurant for a decent lunch in Dublin on Sunday please? Not looking for a carvery or anything though.

    Have looked and looked and can't decide where we'd like to go, there is so much choice, we'd really appreciate any help.

    Somewhere with a sea view/along the coastline might be nice, even if its a bit out.

    Farther out you have Blue Bar & Stoop Your Head on the harbour in Skerries. Blue would be my preference, FWIW.

    Then head across the road to Storm in a Teacup for a lush icecream or hot crepes for dessert. ;)

    My boyfriend just dropped these in to cool a little while he prepares the steak for our steak sandwiches. It's taking every fibre of my being not to demolish them and deny all knowledge. The smell!!

    Another q: what markets (if any) are on on Sunday afternoons in Dublin? somewhere you'd get fresh meat, veg, fruits etc things like that.

    I've heard about Donnybrook fair, but just wondering if there are any others that are worth checking out or is the one in Donnybrook the only one?

    Donnybrook fair is a fancyish/expensive shop SB rather than a farmers market type thing, if that's what the you were looking for. I don't know of any food markets that are open on a Sunday (if you're thinking along the lines of the English Market). You might get better responses on the Dublin City forum though

    The market in Dun Laoghaire is on every Sunday. Mainly hot food and baked goods with a small amount of meat/veg places.

    I'd definitely recommend Howth as Dun Laoighaire just has hot food stands as opposed to a wealth of produce. Here's a good list of farmers markets which is handy if you're a. A foodie and b. Going somewhere different for the weekend

    It's not really cheating, I just didn't follow the recipe in beerton's list from the slow cooker thread.

    Have a pork shoulder in the slow cooker today. Got talking to the butcher and he made me up a barbecue marinade sauce and threw it in with the meat. It's been in about 4 hours now and I can see it falling off the bone under it's own weight. Nom nom nom

    It's my birthday, and for my gift I asked that we take our young teens and my friends along with us to a fancy dinner in the 1 star 't Amsterdammertje restaurant. We ate as a couple a few years ago during the Dutch festival restaurant week and it was outstanding so I'm really looking forward to it...


    ...except that because there's more than 6 in our party the chef will be coming to the table to discuss a menu with us. One of my friends is allergic to shellfish, which we've already informed the restaurant, but another is planning to tell the chef that she doesn't eat rabbit or horse (because she seems them as pets and not food) or any game. I'm dreading what my children will say. We'll probably end up being srved plain boiled rice and still having someone complaining that they don't like rice!

    Does anyone else drink buttermilk? Just opened a Polish carton of it there and sweet mother of jaaaaysus it's delicious :D

    Yes I drink and like buttermilk, especially the fermented ones like the Polish brands or Cuinneog. I thought it was just me! My granny used to give it to me years ago and I've always liked it. It's not like drinking sour milk, which is obviously horrible!

    My Polish SIL puts a pinch of salt in it. She says it takes away any sour taste and makes it slightly sweeter.

    From time to time yes! Love it. Eastern Europeans drink Kafir, which is really similar-It may even be the same thing?

    That's a new one! However it may explain why these taste so amazing with it. I've just demolished a whole bag of them.

    Am I right in thinking dried spices only lose their flavour/potency when out of date? Just made a spicy tomato relish and threw a 1/2 tsp of out of date allspice in before I noticed. Note to self: go through extensive collection of spices and check dates!

    Ground spices lose their flavour over time. Be sure to store them in airtight containers in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

    Yep, all stored in airtight containers inside in a dark cupboard. The relish tasted good so the out of date allspice didn't do much damage to the flavour! My OH has a habit of buying more jars instead of checking our already big collection so I've a feeling there are doubles if not triples of some hiding in there. Must go through them!!

    On the one weekend of the month when oh does not have his children over, our favourite thing to do on a sunday is head over to the market in Howth, pick up some nice bread/cakes, maybe some veg, browse the non food stalls, have a walk down the east pier to the fishmongers, then usually we go for food in blues doghouse for a couple of hours
    true op who asked the question didn't seem to like howth though regarding places to eat despite it having everything from pizzas and burgers to Mexican and more fancy stuff

    That moment where someone asks you if you have something random & food prep related (in this case, something that could be used to hold dough together in an oven) and you're like 'No, I can't remember buying anything like thaaaa....' and then you remember who you are and go get your ridiculous stash of, mainly unused, food items
