The last couple of Gene Hackman movies I saw, he did not look at all well. So I thought he'd be gone now, but I checked and he seems to be doing better since he retired in 2004. We know he's been keeping active: three years ago he was knocked off his bicycle, suffered minor injuries, and recovered OK. He's now 85.

Also: back in the 1980s, I remember the shock when talented young guitarist Jason Becker was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He was only 19 but had already had a huge impact, and had been headhunted by David Lee Roth (the Van Halen singer gone solo).

Lou Gehrig - the baseball player after whom the disease was named in the USA - was diagnosed at age 36, and died shortly before his 38th birthday. Doctors told Becker he wouldn't see 25. That was in 1989, and I'd kind-of assumed he'd succumbed to his condition. That was until last year, when a documentary movie came out, about his life. The title: Not Dead Yet.

Up until a couple of weeks ago I thought Harper Lee had left us.

The difficult second novel is due for publication this summer, 55 years after To Kill A Mockingbird.

Given the fact he's still only 77, he definitely looked about 80 when he was in his mid 40's!

Surprising amount of Hitckcock leading ladies still alive, Kim Novak, Eva Marie Saint, Tippi Hendren, Doris Day, Julie Andrews, Maureen O Hara, Shirley MacLaine.

Very few men spring to mind, Sean Connery and Bernard Cribbins, can't really think of any others.

George Kennedy is still around I think, remember he used to be in everything?

I really like that guy. Got an oscar for his incredible performance in Cool hand Luke. Rattled good old J.R. in Dallas from 88 to 91. A pure gent and one of the all time greats.

His facial expression when he insisted on going up to Tootsies apartment(Tootsie1981)only to be met by Tootsies(Dustin Hoffman) friendly and convivial flat mate (Bill Murray) will go down as one of the greatest movie comedy moments of all time.

Paparazzi always seem to snap him drinking green smoothies or surviving car fires.
