    ..yet anyway, touch wood.

As a young lad on the bounce I used to love me some re-runs of George and Mildred and had just assumed the actor that played old George (Brian Murphy) would have been kicking it in the here after (as hadn't heard tell of him since) but not a bit of it, the old fellow is alive and well (was in Holby City last year).

Frighteningly, I don't think I'm now too far off the age of George was supposed to be in that show. Yikes.

So AH, are there any old codgers that you had presumed must have croaked it by now but are in fact still breathing?

Here's a starting point for your Google searches - list is a few years out of date, but some real surprises there.

I remember back one year in the mid 90s getting The Quiet Man widescreen special on VHS for my Dad for Christmas as he loved that movie and as he was reading the back of the box he said: "Ah Maureen O'Hara, God rest her soul". .

    She's still alive today!

When Andy Williams died a few years ago my first thought was "was he not already dead? Oh right...."
Was also surprised to discover that former Taoiseach Liam Cosgrave is still alive.

The last couple of Gene Hackman movies I saw, he did not look at all well. So I thought he'd be gone now, but I checked and he seems to be doing better since he retired in 2004. We know he's been keeping active: three years ago he was knocked off his bicycle, suffered minor injuries, and recovered OK. He's now 85.

You are the type of what the age is searching for, and what it is afraid it has found. I am so glad that you have never done anything, never carved a statue, or painted a picture, or produced anything outside of yourself! Life has been your art. You have set yourself to music. Your days are your sonnets.

Also: back in the 1980s, I remember the shock when talented young guitarist Jason Becker was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's Disease (ALS). He was only 19 but had already had a huge impact, and had been headhunted by David Lee Roth (the Van Halen singer gone solo).

Lou Gehrig - the baseball player after whom the disease was named in the USA - was diagnosed at age 36, and died shortly before his 38th birthday. Doctors told Becker he wouldn't see 25. That was in 1989, and I'd kind-of assumed he'd succumbed to his condition. That was until last year, when a documentary movie came out, about his life. The title: Not Dead Yet.

Given the fact he's still only 77, he definitely looked about 80 when he was in his mid 40's!
