Handy number innit? Day out for the lads, everyone looks busy and no one has to do anything too strenuous.

Will it be top of the agenda at the next union meeting?

I was responding to the claim that nobody in RTE has been heard of, or offered work, with the BBC.

I would assume the LLS is RTE TV's biggest revenue-generator from advertising.

In fact, RTE has posted a pre=tax surplus of 1 million euro.

Nah was thinking more of the amount of crimes committed, What would be wrong with legal aid being refused for consistent repeat offenders ? Take stuff from their homes to pay for costs, Ban internet usage social media put mobile phone blockers into the house. Affecting them and their family would have a very quick result in behaviour change. Cant have fun without all your modern gadgets.

jaaasssusss. U can't be doing that Ted. All the do gooders would be up in arms about civil liberties and all that jass.

There is a lot of guff here about the TV licence. Whatever you think of the TV licence that isn't really relevant to the ridiculous enforcement of fines, which is the issue here. Attachment of welfare etc seems the way to go. Also in the case of unpaid TV licence fines they should be allowed seize your tv and aerial/dish, which might do the trick.

You would swear it was a pirate radio-station they were using.

The woman is wasting tax payer funds by not abiding by her court order, what a waste it was. Shouldn't have had a tv if she didn't want to pay for it.

    Sounds good to me.

Send your suggestion on a postcard to RTE.

    Suggestions!!
That's not the way RTE work.
They prefer to take a tried and tested formula for a show like "Never mind the buzzcocks" and adapt it into a piss poor knock off like "hey ho lets go"

TG4 amply demonstrates you can do extensive, decent quality public service broadcasting for a fraction of the budget RTE costs.

it doesn't. tg4 is an exception to the rule, but what it does do is small fry in relation to rte.

There is very little difference quality wise between RTE and TV3. In fact in many cases TV3 are superior.

A lot of the licence fee doesn't go on quality programs. It goes on completely unrealistic salaries for "stars" like Tubridy, Marian Finucane, Joe Duffy and Ray D'arcy.

2FM makes a huge loss every year, and is subsidised by the licence fee. Is there any reason for having a 2FM when clearly fewer and fewer people listen to it and other private stations are far better.
yes. 2fm has potential. management afraid to make decisians are its problem. private stations aren't "far better" then 2fm. they are a tad better, but what quality they have is by accident and due to regulations.

The interesting thing is the Licence fee is almost exactly the same as water charges.

Will we see similiar protests around the imprisonment of RTE non licence payers? Of course not. It's not political enough.

Laughable how anti water protesters are happy to pay for a luxury like RTE but not for a necessity like water.
because we are paying for water. infact as i've my own water supply i'm not only looking after my own, but paying for others. i'm not bothered though, better that then they be paying charges to a joke, which will be eventually sold off to paracitic private companies like the UK who will leach indefinitely, even more then IW will

Well some of you forget that she already paid over €200 with instalments so it is even more nuts to do what they did. She should have got on to MABS

What ever happened to the bill that was to stop fines at source. Stop dole payment or straight from wages. Save jail expenses and will increase compliance as people will know that the money will have to be paid one way or another.
not at all. doesn't work and costs as much as prison. it also leads to crime and other scams as people have to claw back the money taken. not worth the hassle

I drive or cycle past RTE every day. I would estimate that around a quarter of an acre of the RTE campus is wasted on green space, car parks, and Carrigstown (the Fair City set).

How much would you get for a quarter acre for a development in Donnybrook? Upwards of a million quid I'd say.

Newstalk, Today FM as well as countless local stations. They all cover the current affairs issues pretty well.

to their point of view. rte provides a ballance all be it not perfect.

Secondly, RTE have a habit of avoiding sensitive topics in a way independent stations do not.

bull. independant stations avoid a lot of topics if it doesn't fit their view.
RTE news and TV3 news are no different. Vincent Browne is far more analytical than anyone in RTE. RTE is usually very middle of the road. The Frontline was a good program, but they soon silenced that.

vincent is an exception to the rule
Lyric FM? Just give a licence to a private station that plays a large amont of classical music.

can't be done. its not financially viable. if a private sector station playing classical was viable, an operator would have applied to go in competition to rte in places where it would be viable. the private sector will only target what makes money.

yes it is . infact even more complicated. you haven't a clue about the radio landscape.
You can control content via licence requirements. If they don't fulfill the requirement withdraw the licence.

deluded. it doesn't work. the regulator isn't going to see a station go off air so it can't be done. rte is the only one who can run such a station.
A station like Lyric probably doesn't have to pay large royalties like other stations due to copywrite expiry.

    means nothing

If the programming is so good, People would pay a subscription model. They keep banging on about how good the programming is. So roll on sub.
i wouldn't pay for subscription no matter how good the programing is . my tv consists of the RTE box and a free box for the bbc/channel4/itv and other free channels. it does for what i watch

Those type of programmes could and should be done, but there's nothing to stop RTE commissioning them on a more cost effective basis from private production companies working with universities and cultural institutions.

    What?

If RTE just commissioned, then they'd issue a spec, the production companies would pitch and price in a margin to their final tender offer. The system would be inherently profitable for them because they'd know exactly what they've to produce and how much they'd be getting paid without having to rely on fickle ad revenues.

The law states that if you own a tv you must have a tv licance.
Court fined her for not paying tv licance
She didn't fully pay court fine
Said woman is sentenced to jail term.

    Correct system should be
    Fail to pay licance.
    Attend court.
Judge fines you for not paying licance and orders it to be taken over 4 week.
    Judge calls next case.

Honestly, if I lived in Ireland I wouldn't pay a TV license because a) I don't watch TV, b) I don't subscribe to cable or satellite, c) I need a TV to display the hardware required to do my job, d) I don't listen to the radio. The concept of a TV license is ludicrous, just make all the channels subscription based instead

Don't forget that broadcasting charge is lurking behind the scenes after we are all converted to pay the water charge. If you don't have a tv who cares, if you own a little radio you have to pay the broadcasting charge even though the tv and radio don't broadcast/transmit a signal.

They will be bringing in a kettle charge soon, so if you own a kettle you will have to pay tax to use it to boil water. And they will know if you have a kettle in your home from them being able to measure the amount of steam in your kitchen. This country is psychotic in nature, it's run by head-cases with a basic agenda to terrorise and assimilate all Irish citizens.

Another new tax coming in soon will be in regards to heat dissipation. If your home is not fully insulated and is releasing heat to the ether, you will have to pay a tax from unimaginable heat-loss. Then the final tax forwarded will be the coughing tax... you will be taxed on coughing as we all cough now and again so that seems to be coming in soon.
