Hotel Residents Bars

I was at a large function in a hotel last Saturday night. I called it a night at 5.30am at which point drinks were still flowing. Is there a time at which these bars must stop serving like in most pubs,nightclubs

It may just depend on the Hotel. Any I have been to were advertised as 4 or 5 am, but then again, have still been in plenty at 5.30 as well. Suppose if there is still a crowd there they keep serving.

It's up to the hotel. Some I've stayed in closed before 12.30am while others closed an hour before breakfast.

Technically it's private (residents only) so regular restrictions don't apply?

Yeah senordingdong is correct. I've been at residents bars where they claim they can/will keep the bar open 24 hours. I'm always asleep before I find out if they'll keep their promise

That's why a lot of nightclubs which operate out of hotels are able to stay open basically as late as they want. Coppers for instance is actually the bar of the Jackson Court Hotel, and the stamp or wristband they give you is the same one they give to residents, so technically they can't be shut down for being open all night.

Fantastic loophole in my view. Time restrictions on licensed premises are ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.

Technically yes,but normally its at the night porters discretion.For example,if your a happy drunk the chap will gladly serve you until the bacon and eggs hits the pan the next morning,laugh at all your jokes and disregard smoking laws.If however your a sloppy drinker who acts the pr1ck you wont get treated the with same reverence

The country ones always seem more flexible than Dublin, in my experience. The one at our wedding stayed open until about 6 or 7 IIRC.

Maybe that is because of what the Dublin councils charge for the permit. We paid €250 to Wicklow County council for the late extension but I was told its a lot more expensive in Dublin

That's rubbish, yes they can be shut down for serving and having none resudents

This. As long as they're residents. I worked in a residents bar and we had to be very strict about not serving non-residents after 2/2:30.

It's not a claim. I had a hen party up till half 5. I eventually had to ask them to go to their rooms but only because I had to clean up the bar for the next day

This seems to be the norm for weddings nowadays,

last three ive been at, ive been propping up the bar at 4.30am and had to call it a night.

That's a late bar extension.

A residents bar doesn't need an extension, it can legally serve all night to residents of the hotel.

It was in Mayo and there was a a lot of people so it would have been impossible to operate a policy of only serving residents. I was in another Hotel in Waterford at a similar event about a year ago and they closed at 4am. I'd say they would have kept serving all night and maybe they did but I was asleep.

I never understand this. Why on earth do people feel the need to sit in a hotel lobby drunkenly downing pints of Smithwicks up til 5 or 6 in the morning.

I was at my cousin's wedding in May of last year in Portumna. It was a lovely affair. A beautiful ceremony and surprisingly a half-decent meal for the reception. I had a fantastic time chatting to some of my relations and letting them know how I was getting on in Frankfurt. Myself and my partner retired to bed fairly late, around 1am I think.

I was determined not to let the festivities interrupt my training regime, so rose at 0630 to go for a light 8k tempo session around the grounds of the hotel. The sight that greeted me in the lobby was nothing short of disgraceful. A bunch of slobs messily slurping down drinks. I went over and told them to cop on and go to bed. They could barely construct a coherent response. Slurring their words as they tried to justify their piggish actions.

Why on earth grown adults behave like that, I'll never know.

I didn't feel sorry for the gluttons who had probably had double digits worth of drinks at that stage. It was more the poor 17 year old night porter who was fetching the drinks for these immature adults who didn't know when to call it a day.
