Space Dandy is great too. Very funny.

Same guy who was involved with Samurai Champloo and Cowboy Bebop, Shinichiro Watanabe, is the main guy behind it.

He's behind Terror In Resonance too. Supposed to be good as well but I haven't watched it yet.

Who in the 1960s had televisions in Ireland to be watching Japanese cartoons?

No problem, everyone makes mistakes ;)

And no idea, but that's when Japanese cartoons started making their way west, and sure there were plenty more in the 70's and 80's. In fact, a lot of kids shows from the 80's were either existing Japanese shows re-titled (Voltron for example), or they were productions that were animated in Japan (like Thundercats).

    Souten Kouro
    Shingeki no Kyojin
    Sengoku Basara

Most Anime series are pure ****. And look how hip i am with my Japanese sounding Anime.

    Also Ghibli movies.
    Akira
    Ghost in the shell
And that Street Fighter Animated movie with English dub. Only time I have ever watched something Japanese and prepared the dub.

    Was battletech anime?

Are you thinking of Robotech? If so, yes, it was adapted from several Japanese shows, but mainly Macross.

Yep, Japanese studios did a huge amount of work for western companies in the 70's through to the 90's.

Just look at the list of stuff done by Tokyo Movie Shinsha http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TMS_Entertainment even stuff you wouldn't expect.

Then there's Tatsunoko production, not only did they do Gatchaman, Macross and Evangelion, they did one of my favourite "american" cartoons when I was a kid, Dungeons and Dragons, this is one of the best episodes, The Dragons Graveyard.

Think Robotech is different. Battletech was great. If you play pc games you've probably played Mechwarrior at some stage.

    http://www.battletech.com/

Apart from the older stuff like Ulysses (and I've just checked) Jayce and the Wheeled Warriors, The Centurions and (possibly M.A.S.K (nothing in the wiki to say it was animated in Japan) then the only 'recent' anime I saw and loved was Spirited Away. I actually watched it not knowing what it was at all at all so it was a good surprise.

I know you like your Japanese stuff so you've probably seen this although it's not anime. Jiro Dreams of Sushi, really nice movie/documentary? on the best Japanese sushi maker. I challenge you to watch it and not want to go get some sushi.

This is why I'll probably never ever watch any of the "Big Three" Naruto/Bleach/One Piece or similar shows that just go on and on endlessly. Hell, Detective Conan is currently up the 760+ episodes isn't it? And how many movies? No freakin' chance of watching that. :pac:

Well, One Piece should be ending at about episode 1000 or so (at about epside 500 the maker said at the time that he was about half way through), but I totally recognise it is a big time sink (I have fond memories of 10/11 hour marathons of it :D ).

Nah, one thing I love about anime is that shows are often self-contained stories, there's a very distinct plot set out from the start and they stick to it and wrap it up after that. So you'll often get shows that just feel like they've concluded perfectly.

    Cowboy Bebop
    Death Note
    Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
    Steins;Gate
    Monster

And so very, very many more...
One show I've finished watching recently was From The New World (Shinsekai Yori) and oh my god, it's left me stunned. What an incredible storyline, dark as hell and the plot was just meticulous, then that ended... left me haunted, still thinking about it.

I do like the shorter ones as well, like Cowboy Bebob, FMA and the likes. Sometimes it nice to get a self-contained story, wrapped up and ready to watch in just a few sittings.

No love for Hellsing or Hellsing Ultimate on the thread yet? I got into it through Hellsing Abridged, thinking the show wouldn't as crazy as the abridged series, but there are times when they could interchange scenes and you'd be hard pushed to tell :pac:.

I just realised that I may have watched as much abridged shows as actual animes. Dragonball Z, Naruto, Yugioh, Hellsing, Pokemon (One Kids Entertainment) and One Piece (None Piece), Code Geass (Code MENT) and Black Lagoon (Dark Swamp) all have great abridged shows on youtube.

I have the Dungeons and Dragons boxset (minus the final episode of course) which I think you can find a script online. :/

They kinda did the same thing with the Berserk movies, they removed so much plot and so many characters, it was unreal. One thing that really annoyed me was that they removed the Queen of Midland even, which is a bit crazy because
Griffith's eventual imprisonment doesn't make as much sense
. The icing on the cake was removing Guts' origin story, I mean that's pretty god damn integral. It's like the movies just did some big flashy battle scenes, for people who're already familiar with the story.

I think the idea really was the trilogy to be more of a 'recap' and that from that point they'd tell more of the saga. But as with Eva it's pretty much up in the air at this point. It's a pity, because Berserk makes Game of Thrones look practically tame, it really needs a proper adaptation. The anime from the 90's was kinda cheap and nasty, but story wise it was a lot better than the movies.

Those recent Berserk movies were absolutely pants. Stupid me got my hopes up in advance too. Some of the animation (especially the CGI stuff) was beyond shoddy and amateur. Really disappointing, I hate wasted potential like that.

I loved the Berserk anime. The animation is a little '90's cheap' alright, but after a few episodes something really clicks with it.

It's amazing how gory it seems until you read the Manga though. Holy god, Kentaro Miura's mind must be one scary place

I absoloutly loved Dragonball as a child & recently started getting the DVD's. Other than that, i'd say Gundam Wing. I haven't watched too much recently, being aprehensive of getting into something with hundreds of episodes. I quite like Claymore while i think shows like Blue Sub 6 and Angel Beats are rough diamonds.

Oh I know about Battletech, played a few of the Mechwarrior games on the PC, and freakin' adored Mechcommander. Speaking of which, that's available as freeware now, must download it and give it a whirl for old time's sake. But some folks have often confused Robotech with Battletech, so I was making sure if that's the one the poster was refering to ;)

And no I've not actually seen Jiro Dreams of Sushi, I must get around to it at some point. I do watch a fair bit of Japanese movies too, not just anime.

I actually didn't mind the CGI at some points, it's something that I could've easily put to the back of my mind if it wasn't for the fact that so much was cut out. It improved quite a bit for the 3rd movie, and I'd actually say that the 3rd was a step up from the series because
    they introduced the Skull Knight
, but the first two were practically clip-shows in comparison.

As far as CGI goes in general, there's some studios that do it well and some that don't. Well done it can be blended pretty seemlessly. Ufotable are a master of this, but as far as I know they have their own in-house CGI team.

I really must read the manga again, I only read a few books of it. But yeah, Miura's just...

I think a lot of people might not specifically be fans of anime, but will have watched some anyway, you know? Like they wouldn't specifically seek out anime, but will have seen some. How many people in AH would have seen Spirited Away for example? In fact, I imagine it would be pretty hard these days to have never seen any anime at all.

The only anime I ever watched was Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood. I did watch Avatar and legend of Korra as well but they are anime style not actual anime.

I've only ever watched 2, Mila Superstar is the one I've watched the most. Only watched it because Mrs. Bap bought them and forced me to watch (in German). It's about volleyball I think.

I cant recall the name of the other, something about a bunch of lads that are training to be footballers. This was on German TV a few times, I only remember that the kids used lots of swear words and was on well before the watershed.

    Anyway...

    'Akira'

I haven't seen anything that has come remotely close to it.

One I forgot to mention earlier (though I'm sure I've mentioned it on boards before) is Kogepan.

Ten episodes, each about 4 minutes long, about a depressed bread roll who got burned in the oven. Ridiculously cute and also quite touching.

How far into it did you get? It's one I think that needs some time to get into, the earlier episodes are quite rushed and it is a bit kiddish, but once you get past that it's really incredible. It's got a huge sprawling plotline that just comes together wondefully towards the end, and some amazing action. ;)

Not very far, about 2 episodes I think. It did seem very rushed and a bit too slapsticky for my tastes. The plot sounds interesting though, I might give it another chance. Though since I've heard nothing but positive things about Cowboy Bebop I'll probably make that the next anime I try.
