Thought's on E-cigarettes?

I'm all for E-cigs and personally, I think the government & pharmacies are getting upset on how well they are actually selling and aiding smokers wanting to quit.

I seen an article back in January from the Mirror.co.uk and the Headline read : ''E-cigarette health scare erupts as officials highlight "serious" cancer risk of vaping''.

Following that I read on NEJM's Twitter : ''Chemical analysis of e-cigs' vapor show high levels of formaldehyde. Authors project higher cancer risk than smoking''.

I uunderstand that there hasn't been much research on E-Cigs BUT they have be better than Cigarette's.

Do you use an E-cig? Did it work for you?

But we don't know what's in the liquids as they're not regulated at all.

If they get people to quit cigarettes that's fantastic but if people are just replacing smoking with vaping an unregulated substance then that's not a good situation.

Ingredients list is generally - nicotine, food flavourings, propylene glycol and vegetable glycerin.

As a non-smoker, they annoy the hell out of me, like regular cigarettes.

Better than cigarettes, so I'll stick with it.

Nobody claims vaping is 100% safe. I doubt it is, because the only thing you should inhale into your lungs is air.

But it's better than smoking, so I'm happy to do it. I know what goes into my liquids and I know how it'll affect my body.

I don't think analysing the ingredients is enough to conclude that there aren't any toxic chemicals released by e-cigarettes. There are also chemicals in the 'wick' which contains the nicottine oil before it is vaporised in the atomiser

There are many different types of delivery mechanism for e-cigarettes. I would welcome more research into which methods are safe, and which may pose health risks.

There absolutely does need to be regulation to protect consumers and children (safety caps to prevent children from direct exposure to the nicotine oil which is very toxic if swallowed)

The nicotine oils should be regulated in the same way food additives are regulated. Only additives that have been tested and approved for human consumption (inhalation as a vapour) should be allowed and I would also support restrictions on the sale of flavoured nicotine because this seems to me to be a barely disguised way of trying to attract young new smokers and the additives for these flavours are introducing extra risks in terms of toxicology.

Other than that, I support e-cigarettes.

I used one for about 6 months instead of smoking. During that time my energy levels increased, I smelled much better, I could exercise for longer and my mouth was fresher when I woke up in the morning plus I had extra money every week.

Did you go back to cigarettes or have you now quit smoking entirely?

I went back to smoking unfortunately but that was due to my own lack of willpower. The first few cigarettes I smoked tasted horrible!

That formaldehyde study was throroughly debunked. Basically to produce any meaningful amount of formaldehyde they had to run the atomiser on a high voltage with very little liquid. This would taste disgusting and any user of an ecig will tell you they would stop straight away if they got a 'burnt' taste or dry hit that this would produce.

Two years off the smokes now with my electronic nicotine delivery system

no matter what chemicals are in it it's nothing compared fag's and if there is some long term side effects at least I will be healthy when I get them

I use one and am off the fags for a few months now and my chest is much clearer and I can jog faster and longer.

In time I hope to quit the e-cig but I'm doing good and my wallet is far better off

Any time I've gone back on the cigs after quitting them the first few are disgusting! I think it's pretty common.

The self hatred that seeps into your mind is awful too.

Like artificial sweetners , lots like to think there has to be something wrong with them, but nothing has proven that. It's much about being afraid of the unknown, and scaremongering by the media and others.

I do agree that more research is needed, and regulation is probably necessary, but as for this assumption that they are the devil, that's just silly. Having said that, my boyfriend probably handles his smokey dealy more than me

The way people hold them when smoking gives them a furtive look.
Kinda like they're trying to do it on the sly.

I have an e cigarette but it doesn't hit the spot like a cigarette. I'm currently using it to reduce the amount of normal rollies I smoke rather than completely cut them out. It's very easy to slip on e cigarettes. It runs out on you once and someone offers you a real fag, next thing you know you're in the shop buying a pack of tobacco. I shouldn't have sold my willpower to that traveling chinese monk.

Although when they regulate e-cigarettes they'll just throw tax on that.

Do the health costs down the line from smokers outweigh the loss in the short term I wonder? Of course our governments aren't known for their long term vision so that point is probably moot.

Its not particularly straightforward to do, presumably they'l try do it through excise duty which is how they get such big taxes on alcohol and cigarettes.

Effectively there are 3 separate components (battery, tank/clearomizer and liquid).
Really tough to see how you put excise duties on just this particular type of rechargable battery without putting it on all such batteries -so this is out imo.
The clearomizer/tank is difficult as well, its only reinforced plastic with a metal bit containing no substances which can reasonably have excise placed on them.

So it'll come down to the liquid but its not particularly straightforward either. Go for a ridiculously high excise duty even close to that on cigarettes and people will discover how trivially easy it is to make your own. Stopping importing from abroad will need extra legislation. And the liquid is so small that a traveller could carry a decades personal supply in a small carry on bag, unlike bulky cigarettes.

I think they'll struggle to get money here.

I smoked 20+ Marlboro per day for 25 years,
Two years ago a pal of mine showed me this E-Cig he was using, I had a blast of it (we were in an airport) I thought it wasn't bad.
A week later I went to one of the shops and spent €100 on a proper E-Cig system (Wicked Brand I think)
I used it for about 2 months until one night I was going out so started to fill my 1st and backup tank with fluid, make sure my batteries were fully charged..... I just stopped and thought to myself, this is stupid... I went out and left them at home.

That night was difficult, very difficult, the cravings decreased as time went on although sometimes you get a really strong craving out of nowhere, but it only ever lasts 30 seconds.

That was two years ago and I haven't touched one since.
I don't stink of stale fags, My breath is clean.
I don't cough up a lung in the morning.
It saves me a fortune.

Sometimes if I am talking to a heavy smoker, I shudder to think that I smelled like that.

E-Cigs are the reason for the single most important health change in my life.

I hate the way people go on that they're Safe like its makes vaporizing durgs into their system is in some way better than smoking. Some people have enough cop on to know they are safer but in no way safe but they are in the minority.

I hate when people use them around me in spaces where they wouldn't be allowed smoke. Just Fcuk off...

I automatically judge the fcuk out of people with those nasty sticks hanging around their necks, and not in a good way.

Like really, who really thinks vaporised pure nicotine mixed with completely unregulated random other ingredients is a good idea? seriously, WTF is wrong with people.
