Think he looks a monster but wouldn't touch him at the prices. Will see what price is on the day/size of field. Bar L'Ami Serge it looks a really poor group that'll be turning up in opposition.

Not the greatest race alright but if something like Shaneshill goes hard from the front he'll be tested. Just seen Mullins interview from today though. Don't think I've ever seen him as confident about a novice, ridiculously bullish on Douvan.

Yeah he is and Willie isn't one to overhype a horse.

Douvans the super star Novice yet allez colombrieres was the star until he unfortunately died. Then Nichols canyon was the star for a while,im not falling for the hype.

Anyone thinking of backing douvan should watch the 2nd horse from douvans last race in his previous race over 3 mile he looked slow and a future staying chaser so beating him comfortably over 2 mile is something any decent 2 mile novice hurdler should be doing.

7/4 is mental considering vautour was so 7/2 and beat a top field looking back, betfair hurdle winner, greatwood winner, grade 1 aintree winner turned out of that race with more good types.

Also im a believer of laws of averages so mullins/walsh/ricci due a supreme loss after winning the last two.

Lads . just remember the most hyped of his novices last year. Briar hill and look at what happened that horse since. At every preview night he was at Patrick Mullins was raving about briar hill saying its the best of the mullins novices even better than faugheen and vatour.. The hyping of douvan reminds me exactly of what they done to briar hill.. I will certainly avoiding douvan without question

Briar was no faugheen or vautour but he has ability deep down, im sure he would of been in the frame if he hadnt fell at chelt as he had given very wood a beating giving weight previous. That fall no doubt ruined his confidence and last sun he looked better before falling at the last the poor fella! Could of been a top horse but not faugheens class.

Excellent performance by Devilment today. Wonder if he'll go for the Triumph now. What does that say about Pain Au Chocolat's form who I strongly fancy for the Triumph Hurdle, as he beat Devilment by 3 lengths last month.

Patrick was putting BH up as his nap at Preview Nights alright but at no stage did he say he was the best of their novices. Just said that he was a lazy type but that he'd a world of ability and was fancied. Anyway it's Willie's comments below I was referring too as Patrick is well versed is playing to the hype of Preview Nights at this stage. As Rossom said, such comments by Willie are rare...

""He’s been marked in for the Supreme for some time now and we’ll take anything on. He’s just got lots of natural ability and every question we ask him, he has the answers to. He’s one of the nicest horses we have ever had going to Cheltenham."

Triumph hurdle thoughts any one think J P Mcmanus horse Hargam got a chance i think he wil be thereabouts at the finish thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 99 ✭✭YoungKhalifa

Hargam hasn't really beaten anything and 6/1 for such a competitive race is much too short for me. That said he looks a decent prospect and definitely holds a chance.

To be fair to Patrick he is nowhere near as guarded as his dad or Ruby.

Happened to be speaking with Tony and Danny Mullins recently and they both said Douvan is an unbelievable horse and would not be beaten. Tony also remarked that Willie told him Douvan is the best novice he's ever had.

Douvan is skinny enough in the betting and probably deserves to be considering Ruby hasn't ever asked the horse for any serious effort despite winning well and easily

I know Willie cant win everything but I think this is one race he wont be leaving behind.

I do fancy him to win this, if he gets into a battle with peace and co with the champ on his back id fancy him to come up trumps.

Paddy Power giving 8/11 that McCoy will ride Carlingford Lough in the Gold Cup over Holywell (Evs). Am I missing something or is that a great price? McManus will insist that McCoy rides his horse.

AP McCoy has announced in his blog for Cheltenham Racecourse that CARLINGFORD LOUGH, on whom he won the Irish Hennessy, will be his final Cheltenham Gold Cup ride.

Mc coy confirms he rides Carlingford lough in the gold cup unsurprisingly.

The World Hurdle is thrown wide open with More of That very unlikely to compete. Beat That is possibly the best bet at the moment.

Forget Briar Hill, what about the year before re. Pont Alexandre

"After his latest victory, Mullins said of Pont Alexandre: “He looks to be one of the best novice hurdlers we've had, apart maybe from Hurricane Fly"

    Hype fills the bookies satchels.

You're actually spot on about Pont Alexandre, Willie was indeed bullish about him. He didn't have the pace of Douvan though. FWIW I wouldn't be backing Douvan. Mullins can't win all 4 surely and I think the other 3 shorties have much less to prove.

So young went off 7/4 for a novice hurdle one year after being proclaimed as the 2nd coming. Douvan could well win but at the prices it has to be a watching brief. Tom mullins is also full of sh1t

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,172 ✭✭✭NaiveMelodies

People shouldn't be using a trainers comments as a primary reason as to why they should back a horse, especially a talented novice.
Mullins definitely thinks the horse is very good, but he's been wrong before and will be wrong again. He doesn't have a crystal ball and horses are animals(not machines).
Personally I think the price is plenty short enough for a novice event given what I know.
Unless your really tuned in to form, the horses scope etc. and the same for the others that line up I'd think it would be hard to justify a serious bet.

Any chance Annie Power will go for this? Wasn't far away last year.

Up for Review for me. Was very impressive in what usually turns out to be a quite good bumper. Silver Concorde won same race last year!!

Another crack at the bumper has been the plan for Vigil for a long time

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,726 ✭✭✭posturingpat

The Pipe horse looks very good but he's not a trainer i'd associate with the bumper and he hasn't had a prep. Moon racer 12/1. Gigginstown will have a strong hand too now whoever they send now they've decided to let theirs go.
