Traffic volumes to the photography forum have fallen precipitously over the last 5 years or so. More subfora would just serve to fragment it further I think.

What are the percentage drops do you know?

It would be safe to assume that most of the users that post the noise have no intention of developing their comments into anything more than chit chat.

So you regarded the congratulations and good wishes you got on the Random Thread on the birth of your baby as no more than mere noise?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,231 ✭✭✭dinneenp

I've nothing against this but don't like the Idea of opening a new thread just to say 'nice photo' or some small comment.
How about having 1 continuous thread for people to comment and ask small questions.
But of you want C&C then open your own separate thread.

I find your post a good example of 'noise', and to be honest a little creepy.
Keps, you're not contributing anything, nor are you suggesting ways to improve things.

As I said, I agree with most of what you said in your post above.

I just find the use of the word 'noise' to describe a post which makes a brief comment or asks a simple question to be unfair.

And the position is that we were presented with a 'Fait Accompli'.

There was no consultation with forum users!

The only request for suggestions came after 2 days of me querying the wisdom of the new set-up.

Anyway - I seem to have made enough enemies here to last a lifetime- so farewell.

Don't have them handy, I'm subsisting on my phone for the last few days, but I've posted them before into the random and off-topic thread

I fully expect that the majority of C&C threads will be along the lines of
"Lovely shot, was that in taken in Howthville town?"
    "No".
    /End Thread.
However, every now and then a thread will emerge that will spark robust, heated debate and most importantly teaches us all something about photography.
my natural reaction to a shot i like is a thumbs up (no C&C required), but the ones i'd like to get my teeth into (after they've set my teeth on edge) are ones i don't like - and i'd naturally avoid singling a shot like this out to tear into it. and i suspect this is the issue most photos would have in attracting such threads. so that's the main speed bump being faced here - not sure how you'd force the photo over that hill into a thread without it *looking* forced...

though i do like the 'edit my photo' thread; probably because i hate processing so it's a case of 'i love work, it fascinates me, i could watch it for hours'.

I sent a PM to keps.

He said he's walking away from the keyboard for a while and hoping to pick up the camera a bit more.

Just interesting to note - that the out of focus flowers and the glasses in front of the bread-bin have got between them 5 votes- while my attempts between them have a eurovision type 'nul points'.

Obviously my photographic and creative talents are so short of what is required on this elite forum that there is little point in hanging around.

I will go somewhere where the standards are not so exacting(and the fellow members are a bit fairer).

Don't be silly Keps, no ememies made here at all. You are just expressing your opinion :)

I am just amazed by the fact that a fellow poster has had the time and inclination to go back SIX years to track down a post of mine to use against me-

And that a mod would then 'thank' it

Just to let you know pixbyjohn - keps will not be back.

I did not read that as being used against you. Quite the opposite actually. I saw it that you had left here before and returned and we hope you will come back again.

CHILLAX keps , I'm sure , that most folks around here like me enjoy your bird shots and just maybe they don't get as much appreciated as they should because so many of them are so well shot. Damn hard to get too, I know only so well. Keep them coming Keps

Yes imagine that. Imagine a poster has the time and inclination to go back years or months to track down a specific post to use against someone else. Just imagine

Wait wait wait. Am I missing something here?
Isn't this thread about how to improve the site?
Instead we are actually entertaining a self confessed paranoid individual, who decided he wants his toys back after throwing them out of the pram.

Why are we not focusing on the suggestions posted by a few of the members here, rather than focus on someone throwing a tantrum?

The changes to the Random Thread have been in place a few weeks now. Would like to hear back on those who use that thread of their take on the modifications. You can reply here or send Mods a PM if you wish.

To me the thread seems as popular as ever and now it is just images. I hear that a lot of people who don't post here, or on boards at all, do look there to see what we post. I think they may welcome the images being more concentrated. Was hoping there would be some discussion on images sparked off outside the thread but so far that has not happened. Very few posters are appending the "C&C Welcome" which could be old habits or they just want to post pics without discussion. One suggestion is that the system should be an "Opt Out" instead of an "Opt In" as it is now. This would require a "No C&C please" tag added instead.

i'd be on for that; plus, it'd be interesting to see a 'how it came off the camera' vs 'how it was after processing' (in the wake of the 'edit my photo' thread); only thing allowed for the 'off the camera' shot is colour temperature adjustment.

the main issue i would consistently have with photos posted here (apart from ones which simply don't interest me) is photos where haloing is obvious; if you can see the puppet's strings, it ruins the illusion. but that's not a criticism i will pick on a single photo to highlight.

To be fair to that poster, you may not like the way he has been saying things but I admire that he has expressed his views. I value his feedback. He is also quite good at admitting his faults and seems to be recognising when to walk away from the keyboard.

Just reading through this thread there yesterday for the first time, I feel bad that Keps felt he had to walk away from Boards :(

I posted a pic there last night in the random thread and, despite having read this thread before it, I still forgot to put C&C welcome! Habits die hard

I think any of the times I've been glancing over other photos in the thread and saw C&C welcome I never had the urge to pay attention to it, it just seems a lot of effort to make a few words of a comment.. or maybe that's the point, maybe ye don't want such short comments on photos?

I think 1 thread for commenting on photos, like the one 'edit my photo' might be the best solution...?

Anyway, I've edited my post from last night now to say C&C welcome, not expecting any bites though :p

It might be worth making it default open to C&C as I agree, I keep forgetting to add the few letters!

    Nail on the head.

CabinSail did suggest this during discussions on what we could do but I (mistakenly) thought that there would be a rush of commenting threads and that rush would make a single thread too confusing to follow. Perhaps due to the slow take-up of the the ability to comment we might rethink the single thread idea again.

    I'm older than Minecraft goats.

Id agree with this. I know me and I know I wont remember to do that when I eventually get around to taking a few photos again.
Wonder why the tumbleweeds are gathering around here more and more?
Its a real pity as it was a decent place to get CC but that seems to have all but vanished.
