The Irish Times is going subscription based from next week, will you pay to use the site?

Me, probably will as it's the only half decent Irish news source.

No, me neither. This is their second attempt at moving behind a pay wall. They were paywall on ireland.com up to mid 2008.

Subscription based daily news doesn't work, people will not pay for it. The IT tried this a few years ago and reverted back to the free version but with advertising as the revenue generator. Most people will click on to another site for their news if they hit a pay wall.

Not a chance. In general, I find Irish news source to be pretty poor - bit too heavy on the internal and recreational news. I was pretty amused when the whole Ukraine crisis started - news sources from the whole world, obviously, headlined with it.

RTE and a few others in Ireland, they started with GAA results, then added an "oh, on unrelated news, WWIII might be brewing. But let's go back to water charges!"

Yes. A pure advertising model results in sites like thejournal.ie and the Daily Mail. Sensationalist clickbait with the permanently outraged posting their stupid moronic opinions underneath it.

Quality journalists deserve to be rewarded financially for their work. I'd be happy to pay for continued access to a relatively high-quality newspaper like the Times.

That's kind of why I might. There's plenty of sources for international news and they are better than any Irish sources but very few that offer Irish news in any detail (that I know of). Given the choice between RTE, Indo & the IT I reckon the IT wins.

I subscribe online for a few things. The New Yorker and National Geographic for example. I've considered adding a sub for a couple of others as well but haven't yet.

i certainly wouldn't subscribe to an Irish Newspaper. they're second rate. their international news coverage is a joke and most of it is just wire reprints. It's copy journalism. I'd prefer to actually read something like the guardian and check the journal or breakingnews.ie for Irish news.

I might do. Best news source in Ireland and I much prefer their attitude to news than Independent.ie (celebrity news and clickbait) thejournal (here's what people on twitter are talking about) or breakingnews (standard news aggregator just putting up any story it finds)

Yes love the journal, disagree with the negativity and you get called every name under the sun and stalked around social media

One thing I like about the new York times is the quality of opinions in the comments section. A lot of differing opinions, thank God, but the vast majority are reasoned and well thought out.

I put that at the fact that the 12 quid a month removes the permanently outraged, and aggressive, and abusive.

I hope to see an improvement in the Irish times are a result, I'll pay.

As you say yourself, I'd hope to see improvements in the quality of content. More long-form pieces and special supplements. The 'want everything but want to pay for nothing' crew can then stick to blaming the Government for everything and advocating a Shinner/Far-left paradise instead over on thejournal. A world where idiocy and outrage pass for enlightenment.

There aren't really any newspapers I'd consider paying for - least of all Irish ones - as there is usually some big problem with their reporting that you gradually notice over time, or (especially in the case of Irish ones) they are relatively toothless, and don't do much truly challenging investigative/adversarial reporting or critical analysis.

There is far better quality stuff on niche sites - sites that actually depend upon donations for survival - and I pay a fair bit (effectively 'subscribe', even though it's free) to Yves Smith's Naked Capitalism blog:

Effectively the best resource on the Internet, for critical analysis of economic and related political topics, and for gradually learning everything that is wrong with economics (and learning what is needed to reform economics, as well as present proper solutions to economic crisis).
It's critically important stuff, that you should be able to read in any newspaper, but which you rarely find entered into public discussion at all.

I don't pay for my news and I don't intend to start now. For me, a subscription tends to pigeonhole you to the prevailing mindset & opinion of that singular news source. So to avoid that, I like to receive my new from multiple sources.

I actually never posted on the journal, some of the debates are interesting, as for the Examiner, I would put it ahead of any other Irish newspaper / online news source.

I would consider paying for content if the content is of a standard that is worth paying for.

Day to day news is unlikely to fall into this category. There are other categories that are though.

Why would a subscription prevent it from being like the Daily Mail? They will want to attract the most subscriptions and people are clearly willing to pay for the likes of the Daily Mail (the version made out of paper)
