I haven't read the book, nor will I be seeing the film. As a woman what I have heard about it I find distasteful, and particularly right now with a certain case in the courts. I wonder if this book and film had been written with the same level of violent role play and aimed at a male market would it ever have been such a success or even indeed seen the light of day. If it had I imagine would have been to the torturous cries of misogyny, abuse and glorification of a perverse desire to subjugate women for kicks. Yet throw in a lavish set, a hunky rich guy to do the whipping and suddenly is a fun girls night out, it's empowering, it's sexy, it's prudish to think otherwise.

Sometimes I find women really disappointing.

Written by a woman....men not to blame this time :-(

The funniest part is if you read any extracts of it you'll think it could've been written by a hormonal 15 year old.

I read the first one out of interest as I have an interest in bsdm myself, there were some parts that rang true but most of it was total rubbish. I've never met a Christian Grey or an Ana but have seen many people with traces of both.

No one knows the content of the movie yet and I've heard the director say some of the more controversial scenes in the book were dropped from the film so who knows what it will be like. I don't know if I will watch it but I'm curious about it and I can see the appeal.

I think some people, wrongly, believe bdsm is about abuse, its not. Its role play and only those things that both parties are prepared to do are allowed. I can't remember much about the book but I seem to remember Grey saying on more than one occasion that he would never do anything Ana didn't want. Some people find it hard to understand the enjoyment people can get from this kind of relationship and its not to everyone's taste but its not automatically abusive either. People being abused generally tend not to have much in the way of choice.

It was originally a Twilight fanfic about Edward and Bella, and several traces of the original remain

Does the flute get his lad out?

If he did I'd go see it..

So it turns out young women want to be treated badly, dominated, patronised, infantilized and tortured.

Thank you, pop culture. I now see what I was doing wrong.

Nothing to see here feminism. It's all a good night out for the girls and James Dornan is scrummy!

Page 3 and scientist's tee shirts is where the really dangerous misogyny is at.

You think with the amount of money this thing will make they would have hired some A listers, or even D listers.

Looks (and sounds) diabolical though so maybe they had difficulty casting it for that reason.

That's as close as damn to a Palindrome we're going to get on this subject

I feel sorry for the lads being dragged to it for Valentine's day lol

With all the hype , I really hope when people see it and realise theres no real sex or close to it. the fact that it's crap will spread and stop the continous profits for the movie.

They'll be coming from Gdansk to see the film.

I can only imagine the movie is going to be brutally bad.

They should show American Psycho at a few screenings instead for the laugh.

The answer, of course, is yes.

Sadly, they won't look anything like Dakota Johnson.
On the plus side, you're probably not rich, powerful, and look like Jamie Dornan (although he is from NI, so maybe you do).

I'd rather see 50 Shades of Grey than a generic romantic comedy. If your girlfriend wants to see this movie, you're pretty much guaranteed to get sex after. And, if you are lucky, it might even be slightly kinkier than usual.

Watch "Secretary" instead. James Spader is always worth watching, and Maggie Gylenhall is class in it. Curiously, the lead male's character is a Mr Gray in that film too...

It's S&M Twilight fan-fiction, a boiled potatoe would be sexier.

Is it a good idea to see it on a first date?

    Will I get the ride?

It'd be a laugh if yer man looked lovingly into her eyes and then whispered into yer wan's ear; "That was A-1 Sharon".
