    Fairly high I would say.

Horse racing is massive worldwide and I reckon AP's name is synonymous with it everywhere.

Plus he was our family's GP's first cousin!!

I'm 43 years old and have never been inside the door of a betting shop in my life.
Is this a reason why people like myself couldn't give 2 flying ducks about horse racing?

While Horse racing is indeed a worldwide sport, jump racing is only really popular in GB, Ireland and France. In most other countries flat racing is by far the more dominant version.

Horse racing really only exists for the betting.

So take the that out of it and AP McCoy is nothing really? Horse racing would be below show jumping?

That's true but i'd still imagine that horsey people would be well aware of AP.

Most of us still can probably remember the names like Lester Piggott, Frankie Dettori, Peter Scudamore or Richard Dunwoody as being famous in the equine world. AP ranks higher than any of them.

In Britain they give the title "Champion Jockey" to the jockey who has ridden the most winning horses in the racing season. AP has won it every year from the 1995/1996 season. That is a hell of a record!!

Without betting horse racing probably wouldn't exist at all.

McCoy has been the biggest name as a jockey for 20 years. For most of those there has been no doubt he is the best, the only doubt would be whether Walsh has been better in the last 10 years or so. The sport is only big for the betting but that's just because there's no natural inclination for who to root for without a stake in the race. It's an exciting sport once you've got an interest in who wins.

Never heard of AP McCoy. Strange, as although I've no interest in horse racing all the other names above are very familiar.

You may have heard of his nephew Tony McCoy

Now, I have to admit, I couldn't care less as I have zero interest in horseracing, but AP McCoy has announced his retirement at the seasons end.
Where does he rank among Ireland's sporting hero's?

Over in the UK the BBC Sports personality of the year is a prestigious award.
McCoy won it in 2010. A pretty big deal.

Anthony Peter McCoy = Tony McCoy

If you haven't heard of Tony McCoy then you've been living under a rock.

    He's an Ulsterman and all.

Doesn't ring a bell. And this guy is up there with Ruby Walsh and Frankie Dettori? Weird. Maybe he did something to annoy my dad and he's never uttered his name.

McCoy would be THE biggest name in racing, akin to bod or Carter etc

But since racing isn't a sport, its all about betting, it doesn't really count?
As a teen, I used to work the car park at Tralee horse racing stadium, and after the first race started, we were always allowed in free gratis.
Never bothered, always went home. Workmates always said, come in throw a few pounds on a horse (yes, pounds) and I always said ..never bet on anything dumber than yourself .

Not that I'm hugely into racing, but how on earth is it not a sport?

To me its not, its just an anorexic dwarf on a dumb animal..
When you see horses with blinkers, not knowing where they are going or what they are doing, then its not really a sport.
I think awec mentioned the betting aspect, once you take that out, you have nothing.because without the bookies and betting, nobody gives a fiddler's who wins a race?

I'm not into horse racing and I know all of that is total bollix.
Being insulting on purpose is pretty pathetic too.
If you can't appreciate it thats fine but thankfully you're in a small minority and you don't have to get offensive or spout stuff that is actually just wrong.
McCoy has more sporting ability in his small toenails than the majority of us ever will. If you can't appreciate how athletic you have to be to be a jockey then you are as ignorant as your post makes out.
The betting culture is a huge part of it but there are people who enjoy the races, you know a bit like when humans races. Athletic ability being put to the test and all that.

Ah, right. I see you don't have the slightest idea what you're talking about. Moving on so!

About horse racing? No, I have already stated that, please keep up
Now if you wish to enlighten me, please do, otherwise we shall move on

Calling them anorexic dwarves is not your opinion it's, what I guess was a pathetic attempt to be funny on a topic you have no clue about. As I said most of what you said was plain wrong too, not an opinion.
You said you don't bet on anything dumber than you. Might want to reevaluate your betting options, cutting out quite a large section of the market incorrectly it seems.

Well you can start by thinking about how the biggest investors in the sport can't bet for religious reasons.

If you're going to put so much effort into insulting something you would come across as a little less ignorant if you spent a little time to learn about it first. There's a huge industry behind the sport that doesn't come close to the gambling industry, not that gambling doesn't drive a huge amount of money through it as well (as with all sports).

    I don't bet at all so I'm safe ;)
Now, if you want to show me where a "sport" without betting would still be popular, and that normal sized people that don't have to sit in sweatboxs can partake in, please enlighten me

A sport where without betting it would still be popular, that "normal" people can partake in and that don't sit in sweatboxes?
Either your question is phrased oddly or you're talking about rugby, cricket, football, basketball etc etc

Maybe part of the problem is that every sport you mentioned there is a participation sport, one you or I could play,

Religious reasons? Let's not go down that murky road as its one that will get you truly lost

Now, if you're going to name call, and whine, then I shan't engage with you anymore on the subject

I honestly have no idea what you're on about. The Saudis are the investors I'm talking about here. If you're an expert on the culture surrounding the sport in Saudi Arabia then you know a lot more about it than I do.

You should actually look to the UAE for the big money in British racing,

I guarantee people were racing horses long before other people started betting on who would win. Gambling and racing are very close these days, but of course it would still be a sport if you took away the betting. Not a fan myself however. Too many in the knows, taking easy money off people
