When I was setting the date for our wedding the first thing I checked was that there was no important match on that day... hopefully the church bit won't take long and we can get to a nearby pub, especially if Ireland are going for a championship or slam!

I did similar. I dodged HEC and autumn international weekends, agreeing to have it on a Pro12 weekend and roll the dice, hoping Leinster would be away and/or on Friday/Sunday. Unfortunately they were home on Saturday. Can't win 'em all.

The game starts at 2.30pm so hopefully the ceremony will be wrapped up and you'll be able to skive off.

We did the same. Although another mate wasn't as accommodating and I ended up watching the Munster-Leinster game with the POC-gate incident on my phone at the dinner table. Trying to keep a lid on my reaction to things in that game was pretty tough. :D

If it's any consolation Zzippy, I'll be at the game.

The other lads seem even more mental. Boka Harram? It defies belief what these people will do in the pursuit of their objectives.

downloaded the Destiny demo for PS4. Fun but far from original.

Devils Lair was a pain in the backside seeing as I'm limited to level 7...

I've two level 30 characters on Destiny. It gets seriously addictive later on in the game.

You need people to play with!

Once you can start doing raids it gets way better. Raids are the best part of the game!

Minimum booze pricing coming. All about ensuring a healthy society apparently.

It'll be interesting to see if any pubs knock up there price because of this!

The minimum pricing I can understand to a degree. This push by interest groups to ban alcohol sponsorship of sports events (but not arts events! :pac:) is bizarre.

Funny, I've seen people make variations of this joke all day. But I am pretty sure NI already has a ban on below cost selling.

VFI : "The difference in our prices and off licence prices is encouraging people to drink at home instead".

Govt : "Jaysis, that's not great now. Can we make the gap smaller by any chance? How about reducing your prices?"

VFI : "Reducing our prices? That would mean we make less money right? How about you **** off"

Govt : "Grand, we'll shorten the gap by forcing the off licences to increase their prices".

    VFI : "Sound job lads"

    I actually hate the VFI

This won't affect off licenses at all really. Only supermarkets.

I think I heard yesterday that they won't be bringing it in until Northern Ireland do the same. Obviously so they don't lose Revenue when people start going North again. So they're concerned for our health, but only when they're making tons of money from duty

It I was 18-26, I'd be pissed about this. I'm not too bothered about it now, to be honest, given I drink far less.

Something does need to be done to curb the way we drink in this country and the impact it has on society. It cost the nation over €1 billion annually to deal with alcohol related illnesses and the same amount to deal with alcohol related crime.

I'm sure there are many other approaches that may be taken but I'm happy to see some sort of approach being attempted. The biggest issue will be trying to change things culturally. Too many people (myself included plenty of times) embrace the heavy drinking culture we have in Ireland.

They should legalise weed. Far less associated problems

  • Administrators Posts: 55,122 Admin ✭✭✭✭✭awec

Booze is cheaper in the likes of France and Germany, yet they don't have the problems Ireland has. It's pretty obvious price isn't the issue.

There's a case for it given how successful it has been in places like Colorado. Crime has dropped, tourism has increased and revenue has increased.

Realistically the people who are problem drinkers now won't be bothered by this, they'll still drink away.

The best idea I heard to stop the next generation of drinkers is to raise the age of consumption and have big fines for underage people caught with alcohol, as well as who sold it to them.

You might end up with people who don't drink at all then though, and that's bad for business :O

That doesn't work in America with their 21 age limit so I doubt it will work here

Raising the age isn't the answer. People will find a way, and anyway most young people are capable of drinking responsibly. More info about the dangers of alcohol would be my preference, not fiddling with prices.
