Yeah, we are back to the paranoid notion that marriage was invented by homophobes who couldn't think of a more novel way to persecute gay people.

Where are you getting this from?

I'm starting the Thanks flood for efb. You just know it will never get old.

Can anyone write a script to throw this one out every say, sixth post and pre-allocate server space and some thanks to it?

Every argument that has been used for gay marriage can be used for incestuous marriage. The only reason incest isn't allowed in the debate is because gay and straight people alike find it disgusting. Do you see any parallels here?

Do you mean that think gay and straight people find the debate about SSM as equally disgusting as that of the issue of incest?

So I can understand that, can you supply a study for me to reference?

That's not what I said at all. I want to believe you just misread what I said.

And less of the snark, young man.

This is of course, the ever so discreet way of screaming homophobe.

    Yawn.

O.M.G. heaven forbid, i wouldn't want to define people who insist on the difference between heterosexual and homosexual couples when it came to equal access to civil marriage as homophobes.

Perhaps you could define the parallels you refer to then, if I misread what you meant, please?

Edit: do you mean the view of incest amongst both heterosexuals and homosexuals in society generally, rather than the debate here?

Like - that doesn't prove my point?

You were questioned on that "point". Where did it come from? Where's the evidence it even existed in the first place, nevermind again? Where, on this entire thread, have you seen that anyone believes that? In fact, I distinctly remember people originating marriage to before Catholism, where gays were allowed to marry.

Yeah. I meant exactly what I said. Heterosexuals and homosexuals alike tend to think incest is disgusting. Do I really need a study to prove that?

The parallel comes in when you see that the same reasoning is behind the anti-homosexuality and anti-incest ideas. Opposition to both is fundamentally the same in the mind of the individual. Regardless of health implications for offspring and all that. That's all outside factors. Fundamentally the idea is the same to the person who holds that idea.

So, cool it with the holier than thou chit cuz...

I think Russell Brand touched on this when he said that paedophiles should be treated with compassion.

    No, honest misread.

When exactly was gay marriage legal, when was it repealed and why?

He wants to know when there was gay marriage. I'd like to know as well. Not to challenge you, just because its something I never knew before.

It was something posted about 100 pages back. I'll try and find it but it'll take a while.

No, I don't suppose so. It's more likely to be a "yucky-poo" issue to people unless they suddenly become personally involved with it as a live up and close personal issue. I hadn't read back on your posts til after your last reply to get an idea of where you're come from/stand. Some posters; well........... :)

It was so much easier to blame it on Them. It was bleakly depressing to think that They were Us. If it was Them, then nothing was anyone's fault. If it was us, what did that make Me? After all, I'm one of Us. I must be. I've certainly never thought of myself as one of Them. No one ever thinks of themselves as one of Them. We're always one of Us. It's Them that do the bad things.

Excellent, two new issues to discuss. 1, marriage being an invention of homophobes to harass homosexuals. 2, whether the English language is my first language.

Ok, maybe I was a bit vague.

Do gay people think marriage was invented by homophobes to exclude them?

Your premise is wrong. People aren't arguing that X shouldn't be allowed because Y isn't allowed. They're merely pointing out that equality is a subjective concept. It all depends on a person's value system. What they deem to be moral and immoral. Equality for all the people society deems to be moral and none for the outliers. Wasn't long ago that gays were outliers. Might others be welcomed into the fold in future? Who knows? The incest argument is just a logical exercise to prove the subjective nature of equality.

The referendum is about changing the wording of the constitution to mention that the gender of the 2 people doesnt matter. Other than polygamy, the others will be possible with legislation changes.

If people wish to discuss allowing the like of polygamy or marriage between relatives then they are free to do so but for now the world is starting to allow SSM.

Discussion and studies have been going on for years and the consensus is everything is fine with SSM. Nobody has bothered to do this for the others and when they do then it can be considered. Polygamy is a bit more complicated and there are worries about incestuous relationships but if research into the topic is done and everything is fine then go for it. Gay relationships have only been acceptable again recently, the others havent gone through that change yet.
