Will take any of those little pink headed ram lambs you don't want off of you if they are causing you grief.
Won't even charge for the privilege. Will give the young lad something to do rearing a few on the bottle these long dark evenings!

Lambing is a bit like politics 24 hours is a long time 😉. Bit of a result today with a Lazarus come back for a lamb

A wise man once told me (after he sold ewes to me) you would lamb 7 commercials for each pedigree ewe, they do take lots of time. Paddydream be careful what you wish for you just might get it.:D

All the ladies scanned now with 18 singles 6 doubles, 1 triplet and 3 barren. TBH I'm glad theres only one triplet as I find its tough maintaining condition on these animals, especially in a bad spring.

Quick question, would it be too late to get my ewes scanned this coming Saturday. Ram was let out on September 20th and a batch of 10 purchased Hoggets were put with him on October 10th ?
    Thanks

90 days max in lamb is the general time for scanning but best off asking the man who is scanning before hand

Getting late for the first batch. Scanner will be able to tell how close to lambing, but may be unable to forecast twins or a single. Hoggets just at the right time. IMHO

What's the best time to scan to determine litter size lads?

    Had a pleasing scan today

    Ewes 200% - 205% without 3 empties

    Lanark/Swale hornys 156% no empties

    Ewe lambs 172% - 178% without 1 empty.

Best ever scan here, really shocked how ewe lambs scanned, I put them on poor grass at tipping to stop too many twins

Used growvite pre-tupping but not sure how much of influence it had

    Scanned there this morning...

    5 empty
    10 singles
    26 doubles
    1 triplet

Not the best result, gives a rate of about 1.5...

Good few empty, but the ram was only in for 3 weeks, so can't have it every way I guess...

Not bad for 3 weeks. You will be glad when your in the middle of lambing that it will be over in 3 weeks.
Are u going to sell the empties john.

Yeah, the off farm job kinda limits the time I have, so 3 weeks will do me.

I think I will sell the empty ones, will leave em run with the rest now for another few weeks, but will give em the road in a month or so maybe.
I see cull ewes are €3/kg now, so they should come into some few quid...

    67doubles
    18 singles
    2 triplets
    2 empty

1.8 scanning rate. Very happy with amount of doubles and the fact that there is only 2 triplets. Unusual to have so little triplets when I have so many doubles.

Could your scanner be missing some of the triplets and marking as doubles?

    Scanned this morning
    Ewes
    3 empty
    98 doubles
    24 singles
    30 triplets
    Ewe lambs
    4 empty
    5 doubles
    21 singles
    1 triplet

Happy enough except I bought a very very dear pb ewe lamb in sept to put to my old ram and she's turned out empty. Also 1 ewe empty for the second yr in a row. She's a goner on Monday.

That's a great scan - you're much better off with high numbers of doubles rather than triples.

Yea happy with the rate. Although it's going to be a long drawn out lambing as rams broke out early. Tough with a full time job and young family but still love it. Although need to really look at what system works best going forward.

See ewes with lambs at feed on dd. also might look at stores. I say that every year though.

Great scan, I'd be very surprised you don't have a lot more trips

Never got around to scanning. Is it too late now? About 4 weeks to the first batch.

Not too late but expect some bad reads( trips scanned as twins) he should still be able to tell de difference between singles and multiples.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,437 ✭✭✭arctictree

Silly question but why is it so difficult when late?
