Scanned today. Luckily could do them in shed. Worked out at 1.64 from the ewes put to ram. I'll put up breakdown later when I get a chance. He said the early flocks were high but the % rate hAd slipped back a bit for the mid season flocks.

Scanning April lambers tomorrow afternoon. was suppose to go out tonight and tighten them up and remove access to hay. Looking outside I think will sit by the fire, would 4/5 hours fasting do them for scanning?

Did mine last week. Didn't fasten them either. They were just brought in 30 mins before scanner arrived. He had no difficulty.

Not long in from finishing scanning, lucky missed most of the rain. Averaged just over 1.8 happy enough with that

Myself and 5 neighbours have all scanned in a bunch for the last few years, with only one or two miss scans between us. This year the company had a new scanner from New Zealand. One of my neighbours rescanned all his singles yesterday and there was 8 out of 32 wrong. After the first scan he was not happy has he said he marked about 25 singles in a row and the scanner was flying through them and complaining about the scanner. He had 80 doubles and 6 trip and the 32 singles at first scan. I am 2 weeks closer to lambing than him so no point in rescanning now not happy!

Lambing over, scanning was 100% accurate.
Sadly lost some lambs along the way.
    How did you fair out?

Scanning accurate so far on earlies and maincrop(about 100 or so left). To be honest haven't had a wrongly scanned ewe in years.
Just one lamb extra somewhere one morning(drowned in water trough when I found him!).Either a ewe had him, left him and I missed her (doubtful)or a triplet that lambed the same morning had in fact 4(more likely as he and the triplets were quiet small even for multiples)

    Lambing going very well(so far!!!)Honest answers;
Lost 12 lambs so far;3 after going outside and only 2 singles in shed, rest were halves of doubles or one of triplets.Very very happy with this as losses usually run at 2 or 3 times this normally.
Also 2 ewes slipped lamb;single and a double.
Have 2 ewes unable to rear lambs(thin with no milk)
Lost 1 ewe after lambing and 1 before they started.
Lambs, esp. doubles ,seem to be a bit smaller this year.
Had a few ewes lamb down with milk only on one side.
Very little handling of ewes or difficult births(bonus of smaller lambs!)
Lambs under a wee bit of pressure outside due to wet weather and lack of grass.
Bit of trouble with mis mothering(due to one bit*h of a black ewe who decided to lick one half of 2 doubles and 4 singles all the one morning)Then had her own lamb later and decided he wasn't really to her liking)

No e coli whatsoever.Think thats due to new shed for pens and ewes after lambing.Up to this year penned in same shed as lambing in due to lack of space.

Thats about it really as its after 2 and time for bed.

As the saying goes,' if ya have livestock ya will have dead stock!'....scanning very useful though cos at least ya know what is having what.

    Very true.
Let out ewe with trips on Saturday, 2 were stiff on Sunday.
Had another sick to lamb twins, was going away & handled thinking everything looked good, late home & found first lamb caught at shoulder, second followed.
There's always loses, just hard to accept when you could of avoided it

How many weeks/months before expected lambing date do ye think is the best time to scan ewes ?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,291 ✭✭✭✭Nekarsulm

about 90 days after you let the ram in.

90 days from when they were tipped.
Too early and you'll get false empties
Too late scanner is more likely to get the number of lambs wrong

Scanned 101 ewes today had 3 empties , 30 singles, 51 doubles, 17 triplets happy with the scanning

Their lleyn's sean so i would think its more to do with the breed than anything but they are in good shape. The first year i had them i flushed them and scanned 2.4. The last two years i kept them on an even keel so to speak while with the ram and have got 2.1.
