    Hi,

I wonder if anyone else has this problem with the ariva 250. This is happening very often now for us.

I scanned Satelite and terrestrial channels a couple of months ago, sorted them in order of preferences, ready to go. After a couple of weeks when we watch a terrestrial channel, the picture starts freezing from time to time. It's not too bad for a couple of days and then it gets really bad and we cannot watch anything due to this freezing issue (it only happens with terrestrial channels). I then deleted all terrestrial, did a brand new scan, and again, it works ok for a few days, freezes from time to time and then it is so bad that I need to re-scan again, and so on...

I basically now have to re-scan every week or so.......it really is getting on my nerves at this stage I have to say....

Anyone else having this issue? any ideas what could be the problem?

    Many thanks,

    Seb.

Maybe as a test move the box to the other room and see if the same thing happens.

Thats funny because I had the exact same behavior on the USB Saorview dongle on my laptop, it seemed like an ariel issue, a rescan would fix it for a while then the freezing would start again. I deleted all the old drivers and did a total reinstall and that fixed it, maybe you should update the firmware on your Ariva and see if that fixes it? 5 minute job with a usb stick. You might want to get the cable in case it messes up and you have to recover it though.

"...Yes you are right and a major cause of that is by uprading old channel lists to newer firmware and visa versa. I have already downloaded the proper original latest firmware. I will then factory re-set and install the latest patched firmware. only then will I use the channel list as it comes from the same firmware as the one's I will be installing. This will solve the 'ASH' issue that is discribed. Cross-updating from different firmwares is a big no-no especially on ariva's as I have learned before".

    Folks,
Can someone please tell me if the above means...
If I d/load and install the latest firmware [@ 23-Jan-2015] for a 250stb, then DON'T use/copy the channel list from another "NOT latest firmware'd" 250stb?

In short, I have two 250stb's - bought [far as I can recall] about 4 years ago, one is about 1 month older, and there are very slight OSD differences [e.g. on the older one, I don't get a red dot beside a timer setting on the timer page; on the newer one I do.]

Anyhow... I haven't upgraded the firmware on either box, ever.
Recently however, the timer recordings aren't working properly, i.e. I'm doing my settings the way I've always done but I'm not getting any recordings [unless I press 'record' on the remote]

So I'm wondering if a firmware upgrade would help? BUT will that mean I have to rescan and reorganise all my channels, as opposed to copying from current list on the other box?

I hope this question makes sense!
    Thanks folks!

I'd suggest you do a backup also known as a dumpfile file from the newer 250 box and use that file to upgrade the older 250 box

    Thanks for that Tony.

I'm still wondering though, would a firmware update [to even the newer box] mean I'd have to rescan and reorganise all my channels? Or would the channels remain as they were before the update?

Incidentally, can you tell what the update(s) are from a 4 year old box to the latest update? Are there any visible benefits?

No problem. Once you update the firmware you lose the channel list that you had so best to use an organised firmware/channel list from here or any other source that has one. As for the benefits you would really have to read back through the thread although people usually only upgrade when there's a specific issue. If you use the last firmware posted here you may still have to re organise a few channels but it beats tuning from scratch and will save you lots of time.

id imagine the picture quality would have improved from 4 year old firmware and the web apps will be updated

you could load the patched firmware which does give you a good few different options

Thanks Tony and Nowso - I'll have a rummage here for the most recent file and decide from there!

What is the role of network ddns setting options in the tools menu?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭Seb79

    Hi,

OK thanks to all. I'll first try to install the latest firmware and see how that goes, will let you know the results in a couple of weeks. Failing this I will move the box to another room and try that (not easy....someone at home will not be too happy with this ><)

    Thanks again,

    Seb

How do you load a backed up channel list? i backed up the channel list and loaded another version of firmware to make sure i was uptodate, but i cant seem to import channel list on upgrade by usb menu

    thanks

What has worked for me is to:

    1. Restore the box to Factory Settings.
    2. Load the new channel list as "Default DB".
    3. Restore to Factory Settings again.
    4. Reboot the box.

You will need to rename your "Favourites" if you have this done already.

Do the above at your own risk.

your safer organising then new yourself forcing a wrong channel list on a box generally leads to the box crashing

    ok, thanks lads.

i need a second remote aswell, any recommendations where to get one? Would the 252 remote work from tvtrade?

I agree, though having said that, I have used the method above across a range of Ariva Boxes including 52E, 102E, 103, 250 and 252 without a single problem. These would have varying firmwares also.

However, I have the gear and the know how, to restore the box if I need to.

I absolutely agree that you would be better scanning from scratch if that's an option at all and as said earlier, if you proceed with the loading of a channel list or indeed any firmware changes, you do have a chance of crashing the box, so do so at your own risk.

The 252 uses the same remote. Indeed the smaller and simpler RCU 540 (from memory) that operates the smaller Ariva boxes will work perfectly well also. Should be loads on ebay or as you say, from tvtrade or perhaps satellite.ie

After upgrading to firmware 1.26 b7 I find that often after using the record function nearly all of my channels disappear! I have to reflash with a backup.abs file to get them back. Has anyone experienced this?

Is it reliable? One forum is reporting occasional freezing after updating.

Lads what's the difference between the Ferguson W02 and the W03? Is one better than the other?

The W02 is the small stubby dongle while the W03 has a small aerial attached. The W03 is much much better than the W02 at picking up the wifi signal. With the W02, your wifi router would really want to be in the same room.

Also, the W03 is better at dealing with the heat that thee things create. Having used both, the W02's burn out after a while. I haven't had that issue with the W03s to the point that I only use the W03 now.

I do notice that these dongles don't seem to want to connect automatically to the newer Eircom and VF routers, and require to be manually connected each time you restart the box. Also, if you can connect the box by either an Ethernet cable or even homeplugs, its a better option than wireless.

Thanks very much for that response. Great info in it :)
