The little nimmer that served meself and the young lad well on our 1st 2 outings to Parnell Park was dispensed with today, I had to crank up the 7 seater such was the interest in game. SWMBO even tagged along in her Kepak jersey courtesy of John McDermott, not that you'd know with the 5 layers she had on over it

I think partly due to the relatively poor record we have in the OBC there's a general feel of it being just a warmer upper and that the performances are not to be taken too seriously - there was just an inclination today when I looked at the team sheet that the game was looked upon as a step or 2 above the previous 3 games and the team selection reflected this.

To be perfectly honest I'm tired of the recent mismatches between the 2 teams, coupled with the fact that I couldn't get a rise out of herself, the FIL or BIL today as they grudgingly accepted their faith early on as we stepped into a decent lead, so in a roundabout way I was delighted they made a contest of it - my eardrums unfortunately have paid the price :D

The old adage of a game of 2 halves really ... 1st half they were flying with Shane Carthy partnering Bastick in the middle winning lots of possession and winning most of the breaking ball around the middle 3rd, with Carthy, O'Conghaile and the impressive Brady (for the 3rd straight game) being to the fore. Jim Gavin brought the entire panel for a full days basketball training in DCU earlier in the week and you could see the the support play and inter changing of that sport in evidence in a lot of the build up. Our inability to convert goal chances was once again apparent, the FF line really didn't pull up any trees - McMenamon did what he does but without any great effect - apart from one lovely point 1st half. I don't know whether the rush to promote some of the successful U21's has somewhat backfired - Costello while having all the right equipment to make a good championship player hasn't shown any consistency imo.

All change 2nd half - Bastick off and MDM came on - they used to refer to Darragh O'Sé as "wintering well" when he appeared early months of the new year - and nothwithstanding MDM only recovering from injury reducing his ability to train - I'd still say he had a good christmas , but look you have to start the year somewhere and there was very little in MDM's tank today. Crucially after the goal Carthy and Brady were also withdrawn and we seriously struggled to get over the halfway line. Meath also pushed up on Molloys kickouts forcing the long punt upfield into the Meath midfielders arms, and they came at us incessantly. Like MDM being a big name on paper, Rory O'Carroll struggled the entire game imo, it wasn't that obvious 1st half as most of their play was broken down before it got into him, but he was poor for the goal. They definitely faltered but found the resolve to grind out an unexpected win - seems strange saying this from 9 points up but that's the truth. It's only when you see how quickly the tank emptied today for a lot of the players that you appreciate the work they will put in the next few months to reach championship tilt. Was interesting to see Jack Mc come on into a HF role, this would appear to be the thinking with regard to his role this year. Another lad like Costello that was projected into the set up from the 21's with a rude awakening last year. Likewise I'll reserve judgement on Dean Rock, I understand the clamour for him to start based upon the impact he has when coming on, but with all due respect to the previous OBC games, he was expected to influence the game today against far stiffer opposition, apart from his free taking he didn't show much else.

The ritual for us on our way home from Croker the last few years, has been to drop into the FIL and gloat - his standard reply is always "youse were lucky" and it never mattered how big the performance the Dubs would put it. Coming home today, with him in the passenger seat I looked at him with a smile "youse were lucky" ... fkin right we were :D

Thanks a great write up DoctaDee. Sadly, I have no Meath relations. Not quite sure if that is a good thing, or a bad thing. :p

I agree with what you have posted. Four games in and I would have expected Dean Rock to be influencing the game more. I don't mean in just taking frees and 45's, but in dictating play in general, setting up scoring opportunities for others, making runs to the corners and drawing his man out with him, winning dirty ball etc etc are all things I'd want to be seeing if he wants to contend for a starting jersey. He is doing a fine job of keeping the scoreboard ticking over in the absence of the heavy hitters such as BB & DC. But once the regulars return, he could have a hard time hanging on to the starting jersey.

Another very, very impressive outing from Thomas Brady. Once again, he was in the mix when we needed to manufacture scores towards the end of the game. Am not so sure about CC just yet. I'm not sure if he has the physicality yet to play at this level. I know that great things are expected of him, but perhaps it would be a kindness to send him back to the U21's and give him another year or two to work on his strength and conditioning.

Am gonna ignore all the flubbed goal chances - especially from someone who should know better, like Kev Mc. We have nine (we hope) more months to go in the champo year. I'll give myself an ulcer if I start fretting about them all, this early on. :(

When is the Dublin Adult Football League scheduled to start?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,593 ✭✭✭DoctaDee

I think they extended the entry deadline to last Friday as they were a good few clubs that hadn't submitted their teams. The fixture plan was due to be approved tonight by the County Committee. Talking to our chairman at the weekend we're pencilled in for 3 games in Feb .. like last year the 1st competitive games are in the cup then league and cup again.

I'm thinking 1st round of the league will be 16,17 & 18th Feb depending on which division yer in .. the big boys were out on Wednesdays last year

Should we start a new 2015 thread?

I am not clever enough to come up with an opening post :)

The season is like an airplane. At the O'Byrne Cup, the engine has just started and we are heading to the runway. In the league, we are accelerating down the runway. If we do well, towards the end of it we lift off the ground and start gaining height. All going well, we are flying high come September.

Of course, some planes never get off the ground. Some engines cut out before that. Some don't get their engines even started. Take Waterford. Their engine started with a roar yesterday, but it might cut out soon and not get started again for the rest of the year. Some engines have trouble getting started and then suddenly spurt into life. Other planes fly well, but can't quite reach cruising altitude, like Mayo. They tweak the engine, get new mechanics and engineers in, but no matter what they do it just doesn't make it. I am sure you could all pick counties and give the appropriate descriptions.

As Dubs, we hope to be flying highest. We are chugging along ok now, but that is no guarantee that we will be flying high later in the year. Let's see how fast we are going along the runway in Killarney on the 1st of March. That will be a good marker.

We are an Aer Arann flight hopefully connecting to Virgin Atlantic in Heathrow

I'd like to see both Davy Byrnes (Olafs & Kickhams) & Conor McHugh do a bit of stewarding on the Aer Arann :D

There are so many badass Airplane lines one could quote right now, but I am at a loss to know which one to pick.

Now I know how Jim Gavin feels when trying to pick our starting forwards. :)

Mayo are like Ryanair. They get close, but never exactly to where the supporters want them to get to. :) Joe Brolly is like a fighter pilot, always wanting to take other planes down.

I thought the airline stuff might be a good thread on its own, so make any further contributions of that nature there. Divert to there as it were. :)

Dublin and Kildare are level and going into ET. Dublin throwing away a big lead like they did last week.
16 points a piece. MDMA been sent off. The ref sounds as if he is having a nightmare of a game.
He has made a couple bizarre decisions.

Im not sure of the rule myself with regards to a sending off. They haven't said anything on the radio about it.

I read on Twitter he will not be available for the Cork game next weekend.

    Kildare now a point ahead.

    Sounds like a great game.
    Fittest team wins.
