Seems like everybody will just keep ignoring the horrendous plight of the Internet enabled, put-upon male in modern society. :(

If there are men who would (genuinely) like men-only gyms or are (genuinely) pissed off about there being women-only gyms, they should take action to make these changes rather than just complaining on the internet (when it's brought up by someone else).
Otherwise they may be misconstrued as not *really* caring.

I don't understand the point in women-only gyms tbh - what exactly is the purpose of them? Women feeling self-conscious in unisex gyms? If so, it's not like men don't feel self-conscious in front of women, so yes, I would deem it discriminatory.
What I don't understand though, is men complaining about nobody doing anything about this issue, and about when women protest... rather than protesting themselves.

Good man. In 30 days I'll be bulldozing that sh*t heap you call a gym into permanent nothingness, And I can only hope that you, and the mongrel Race that comprise your membership are inside it when I do.

Why 30 days? Are you waiting on your Safe Pass or something?

They're discriminatory of course, but you answered your own question there really - those women who feel more comfortable around women only when they're working out, don't particularly care that there are men who exist who feel the same way, and being made aware of that doesn't mean they're going to feel any different about it. The same way there are men that feel more comfortable working out with other men and they don't particularly care about the fact that there are women that exist who feel the same way.

They're simply appealing to different markets, and I don't think there's any malicious intent in their business model really.

Don't see the issue with women only gyms, or men only clubs as long as a) they re not publicly funded and b) alternative places exist that accommodate both sexes.

No definitely not malicious, but I think the issue some people have is with women-only gyms being ok, whereas there would be outcry over a men-only gym (it would seem anyway) if Portmarnock were anything to go by.
Of course we can't know for sure unless a men-only gym is actually opened.

One eyed Jack mentioned earlier that his friend runs a few men only gyms. No harm IMO.

Ehh, I can tell you for a fact that men-only gyms are quite a lucrative business the last couple of years, I would know because my brother owns and operates a few of 'em!

There's still plenty of women only gyms around too, but I've never heard of any man wanting to join one, and there's my mate that runs a chain of zumba studios who tells me the vast majority of his clients are women.

Y'know what I've never seen though? Men joining the likes of weight watchers, slimming world, etc. I'm sure a few do, I've just never heard of 'em.

I don't think there's any discrimination involved in separate gender gyms, they just serve different markets is all - some women prefer to exercise with other women, some men prefer to exercise with other men, and then the unisex gyms are for anyone.

Me I'm quite happy to never set foot inside one, wouldn't be my thing at all.

Really never seen one. Closest I can think of is one that had only changing room. It wasn't specifically men's only, mind you the only two women I have ever seen it were competitive bodybuilders.

I think its a bit stupid, gender specific charity events? Charity is supposed to be a nice, selfless thing to do. Telling the guy that he should run other races, I do..... and as an avid runner who has ran the DCM last year, I believe I would be able to earn a lot of money for that specific charity due to the high profile of the event and the fact that a lot of my friends, family and work colleagues sponsor me in my events.

Since I'm almost 100% certain I'm not the only one that is in that situation, imagine just exactly how much money could be raised for that event but isn't because of the requirements of having to be female.

I'm not whinging, I'd like to run it, I feel it would be a worthy cause (not that any cause is unworthy), I just don't see the logic, when they're clearly trying to raise as much money as possible.

I've never actually asked him has he ever had any women wanting to join, because I'm afraid he'll give my ears a good workout waffling on about health and fitness, etc.

Any opportunity at all sets the fcuker off :pac:

I hate women golfers, wish my club was still men only.

Why do you hate them? Are they better than you at the game?

I was a member of a womens gym before, purely because it was the nearest and cheapest at the time. I'm still friends with a couple of girls I met there, but there were some serious bitches there too. In a mixed gym now, though I'd say it's about 70/30 male/female. Can't say I've ever encountered any problems. There are oftens times when I've been the only female there and the men have just chatted away to me.

    Sorry, skim-reading.
And what do ya know: no "war" ensued when they opened.

I don't see the harm either. I don't see the point tbh, but it's only my opinion - that of someone who doesn't have an issue with going to a unisex gym.

The opposite; most are useless and slow.

I'm incapable of speech in the gym because all my air is being used to work out. If anyone speaks to me a hiss is usually the best I can manage.

There's a women only section in my gym. Never been in it.

Surely you'd experience the same issues though with novice golfers who are men?

Isn't there some etiquette on a golf course like play through?

Why not do the men's mini marathon and raise money if it's of such concern to you?

Or choose one of the hundreds of unisex races on around the country every weekend?

On a totally unrelated note I think its an insult to marathon runners that a 10k walk has the word marathon in the title.

On a related note, wasn't marathon a place rather than a measure of distance

Yes, but the distance was then named after the place.

Only the blokes looking at them as they walk by bit is accurate. I've never seen fellas trying their luck with women in the gym, it's usually a case of men making a conscious effort to be seen to not interact with women in gyms, a behaviour which increases along with the woman's attractiveness. Men these days are too afraid of being labeled a misogynist to even be polite to women in such situations. Back in the old days had gyms been as prevalent I'm sure it would have been a hot bed of wolf whistles and slapped arses.

Must put quite a dent in the productive and fast-paced game that is golf....

Back in the old days had gyms been as prevalent women simply wouldn't have been in them.

True but I was straining to make a point. The old fashioned women got all their exercise cleaning the house and slipping hubby's drunken late night jabs.
