And our beef goes to Saudi Arabia.

What exactly would change for the better if Ireland deliberately insulted that admittedly horrible country?

When did President Higgins get an O in his name

Oh, maybe from, oh, Eoin O' Duffy?

It was placed intentionally so that people would subliminally make the connection.

Well spotted though, and corrected now that my plan has been revealed.

Pragmatic my hole, did we lower the flag for Hugo Chavez, democratically elected president of another major oil producer?

I see the UK also flew their flags at half-mast today.

That explains why Ireland 'decided' to do it. Have to be seen to be mirroring the opinions/actions of our big brother all the time.

    Rather pathetic really.

Realpolitik suggests that surface compliments are paid to regimes that while authoriarian, provide revenue for the country. China for instance is accorded the diplomatic niceties various ministers kow-towing to their leadership.

No-one gives a scuttery fcuk about Venezuela, once the CIA know what buttons to push, when and how. Saudi Arabia is a horse of a very different kettle of fish.

On the contrary. I think my excuse was highly effective.

We're in the EU, the EU is strategically alligned with the US, the US is friendly with the family Saud.
We're in the EU, the EU is strategically alligned with the US, the US isn't friendly with Chavez.
Basically Chavez used his oil as an economic weapon to the detriment of US interests and the Sauds use their oil as an economic weapon to the benefit of US interests.
So when Chavez dies, nothing, when a Saud dies, flag at half mast.

I dunno. Maybe the world would start to have a glimmer of hope that we actually had some moral view on things, as opposed to being money-grubbing little fcukers? But that's ludicrous, I know. Money rules all, right?

Mostly true, but without the extra coming from SA the price would be higher and the quantity much smaller. Just remember where the USA sticks its oar into.

Would not flying the flag at half-mast cause Ireland to get into trouble with the Saudis or something?

Since you ask: plenty do. You're suggesting that just because you don't, nobody else does - is that correct?

They sell billions of GBP's worth of weapons to them too. 'We' in the west destabilise the region and then sell weapons to the scum who help 'us' destabilise it with their disgusting bankrolling of Islamist nutters.

The Saud outfit is a useful barking dog who lap up their treats until NATO is finished with them. Then they can trade in their Maseratis for camels.

I believe that 19 out of the 20 hijackers of the 11 September 2011 attack on the US were Saudi citizens.
Says a lot for the country.

I can understand why the UK would lower their flags, even though I detest the slimy relationship they have with SA.

The fact that Ireland had to follow suit and ride on their coattails is what seems pathetic to me. What other 'western' countries lowered their flags today? None as far as I can tell after some searching.

Lowering the flag in honor of an absolute monarch is a fcuking joke in and of itself for a place that calls itself a republic.

I'm not a republican, but I can agree with that, there's a difference between a constitutional monarchy and a dictatorial (absolute) one.

...a place that calls itself a republic.

You'll find that outfits that explicitly use the word "Republic" in their names, like the German Democratic Republic and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are in fact not really.

And there's a good chance that the bits that were blotted out from the 9/11 enquiry spoke of the importance of 'strategic relationship*' the US has with the Saudis.

*Saudi money invested in the US and Saudi money flowing to US weapons manufacturers.

Yes it does rule. And our lives in Ireland are better because we have good relationships with rich nations.
