What a scummy hypocritical mafia state we have right here. A banana republic.

Where is President O' Higgins, head of state, faux progressive and leftist, to intervene to stop this lowering of the flag for a vile dictator?

    Shame.

    Who cares.

    Embarrassing.

Those who are being persecuted, I am sure, would like to see pressure put on, rather than support, for the scummy regime.

No I am far more concerned about the tragic loss of the Celtic Sea God Sculpture in the other thread.

I do not mind our state being chummy with the Saudi's. It's in our best interests until the oil runs out.

Ridiculous to recognise the death of a despot/dictator.

They should take it down and give it to him and let him wipe his arse with it. It seems to have no value.

You should Steven Seagal his short-ass, fcuk him up ugly. Er.

I support the lowering of the flag.

I do also. Pragmatic and the correct decision in the national interest supplants childish ranting on the net.

Hehe, but in that instance, Godwinning would be fair, no?

    True to form.

Dev did offer his condolences to the German state on the death of Hitler.

It's just cosmetic diplomacy. A calculated insult from an ultimately insignificant state would not have improved the lives of those unfortunate enough to live in Saudi one iota. At best, we'd have been ignored. At worst, we'd have lost out on important trade at a time when the country needs to borrow money for it's day to day running.

    Sensible decision.

Well considering Dev sent a letter of condolence to Germany following Hitler's death, nothing else would surprise me.

You could justify any scummy and vile actions with that logic.

Sure who cares about human rights anyway so long as I get to put cheap petrol in my Porsche.

Was the flag lowered, or was the pole extended?
(Either way - I'm disappointed as this chap has no bearing whatsoever on Ireland... )

Not really. By that logic it's ridiculous to engage with them diplomatically or commercially too, and we do both of those things without much outrage as a result

    http://www.jaicc.ie/content/ireland-and-kingdom-saudi-arabia-share-excellent-ties-says-outgoing-ambassador-niall-holohan

There are better avenues to go down if a country wants to voice concern about human rights abuses etc, than by refusing to recognise the death of a leader.

Lowering the flag just stinks of sycophancy more than anything else, but you'd expect nothing more from the Irish government.

Was it lowered for Hugo Chavez, Kim or Col. Gaddafi?

What have we got planned for Mugabe's death?

    National day of mourning?

Some of us do care, The House of Saud is behind and involved in of lots of issues that have caused nothing but trouble and instability in the world, We may as well have lowered the tricolour for Saddam.

So long as there is money in it.

Our oil comes from the North Sea

I'm not defending the lowering of the flag. As I said, it just comes across as sycophantic imo.

I was responding to the suggestion that we shouldn't 'recognise' the death of a world leader in any official sense.

Realpolitik is, though the usual suspects refuse to see it, a necessary part of living in the real world.

Just gimme the fcukan oil. Seriously, just gimme the damn thing now. Then you can get back to playing Rich Kids and we can cut the sh1t and get the fcuk out of this flea-infested hell-hole.

It was just our flag lowering its cloth in shame.

Its President Higgins, not O Higgins

    Shame.
When did President Higgins get an O in his name

But surely it wouldn't be godwin If stating factual evidence rather than just referring to Nazis in a fecitious or trolling manner, im fairly sure you can refer to the Nazis and hitler without godwin, otherwise wed never have intelligent debate on anything to do with world war 2 without some idiot constantly reffering to godwin
