He looks aged for a 36 year old.....

5 years as Taoiseach & he'll look like the guy who chose the wrong chalice in 'last Crusade'.

I admire the fact that he speaks his mind, what comes out of his mouth however is a bunch of neo-con libertarianism. That I don't respect, so no thanks.

There's no doubt that lack of awareness removes a huge amount of stress. Enda is a perfect example; relatively fresh-faced and certainly aging well.

Make no mistake he is a shrewd politician, he picks his battles and he is not some kind of new age political saviour. That said, if himself and Stephen Donnelly started a party together I'd be interested.

He said it before the 2011 GE too...... remember 'not another red cent'?

    He's a bullsh11ter.

So he probably is 'taoiseach material'!

Who cares...they're all the same. Get their nose in the door and it's what's best for them and screw the rest of us. FF FG Labour whatever...same clowns, different circus.

I'd imagine he'll be leader of FG at some stage but Enda won't let go of the reins till he's good and ready. That definitely won't be before the next election so it'll be at least 5 years anyway. Plus now Leo has got the health portfolio which can do brutal things to a politicians appeal. A more cynical person than myself might suggest that Enda assigned Varadkar there to bloody him up a bit in case there was an unexpected heave.

Best example I ever saw was Hillary Clinton who aged about 25 years in the 4 years she was secretary of state!

God help her if she wins the presidential election next year

No thanks. If he was any more right wing he'd fall of the earth

This is a common refrain these days. Leo certainly has the art of saying what he thinks about (mostly what are other people's) areas of Government

Can anyone indicate his achievements as a politician?

    600+ people on trolleys?

    Broke FFail's record anyway.

If Leo is far-right, then you have no idea what right wing means.

I don't think the old guard root and branch members of FG will accept him as their leader because of his sexuality.

Sure enda's taken to hanging around in gay bars now, so no problem there.
Is there an election or referendum on the horizon by any chance?

Leo has a good public image and he talks a good game - and rather than hinder him, his "coming out" will only aid this with the younger more progressive part of the electorate, but I'd be concerned that it's more show than substance.
He spends far too much time on getting himself in the news commenting about everything else EXCEPT his area of responsibility.

If he did rise to the top spot I think Bertie will need to hand over his Teflon Taoiseach title

Serious bad press about hospitals and medical care.
    Health Minister not doing anything.
    Need smokescreen.
    Smokescreen engaged.
Now suddenly being touted as the next leader of the country.

    He'd fit the role perfectly.

I seen him interviewed last week where he was claiming that the health service was in as bad a condition around 2004 under FFail.
This was his defence to charges put to him that FFail never had over 600 people on hospital trolleys.

That's the standard this muppet and the rest of FG aim for, 'not as bad, or as good as, FFail'.

    Sad really.

Sure why not.. it's the FG party line - whenever you're put on the spot blame the last lot (or SF). 4 years later and they're still pulling the same stunt.

It's why FG are actually WORSE than FF (and that's saying something!) IMO as they came in without the baggage promising change and reform but instead obediently implemented EU/FF policy and shafted the ordinary public.
They've equally shown themselves to be just as able for the cronyism, corruption and incompetence of their predecessors.. the only reason we don't see more of it is because they are hardly ever in government.

As for Enda himself, he has to be a contender for the worst "leader" this country has ever had - and I know lots of people will say "uh uh, Cowen was worse" and while he was certainly unfit for the job, he was also thrown under the bus to save Bertie remember.
Enda however is not just weak, he's cowardly - refusing to debate or explain himself to the people he supposedly represents, being the EU's whipping/poster boy for Austerity, and he goes into hiding whenever something happens - resulting in a parade of conflicting statements from his ministers.. which shows he can't even lead his own government never mind the country.

FG's only role in Irish politics seems to be to screw things up so badly that they make FF viable again

I suspect that you underestimate what your average TD is prepared to swallow (If you'll pardon the pun) to keep their seat, which is generally as far as their principles extend. If Leo looks like a vote winner he will get the job.
