    Were kids really better off without Xboxes, Playstations and iPhones etc?

    Going outside on a summers day and not coming home until dark and you couldn't contact them.

    Kids being properly punished if they did something wrong.

    Basically do you think technology has ruined childhoods for kids like you hear so many people saying these days?

    I think it's good that we are developing but maybe it does impact a little too much on kids lives, but hey, we have to change right?

    What you guys think?

    I actually remember games like tip the can and to be honest no computer game could generate the fun I had playing these games.

    My dad used to say the same thing to me in the 80s.
    For fck sake, he had to piss on his feet to keep them warm in Monaghan in the 30s.....how could those have been better days?

    21st century music is far superior to 20th century music, particularly pop, kids have it far far better these days. Much better to be a 21st century kid than a 20th century one, which by in large completely sucked.

    I think it is. The majority of people look back on their own childhood as the best days of their lives.
    Who is to say that my Dad was not happier than I was. Does it really matter?
    I dont think so.

    I am rearing a son now myself and he has stuff that I could never have dreamed of, but my greatest pleasure comes from seeing him playing Lego just like I used to. But that is just the melancholy in me.

    Yes. Kids have been playing indoors with consoles since the 80's. They also play outdoors. Can't get the feckers off the street in many estates.

    You mean the good old days before technology ruined everything.

    Before free education children didn't have to stay in school. Instead they had the opportunity to start a back breaking career as an unskilled labourer at the age of 13.

    Before technology ruined things and parents died of simple conditions. Children orphaned at 10 are bound to have a better childhood than today's children with living parents.

    We pine for the days before the Internet and cultural of gaining information. Back then people didn't know anything about sex or sexuality so when they were abused by an adult they didn't even know what had happened or what to do next.

    Back then you were 1 of 10 children and fathers didn't know all their names. How could a child of today hope for that type of dispassionate parenting.

    The good old days.

    I can't see how you picked up on any of this nonsense in the original post, it clearly asks whether technology has had an effect of kids of today and if times were better without it . You seem to have plucked your post entirely out of your imagination with no regard given to the op

    What? Are you joking? 21st century music has nothing on music of the 20th century. Most "popular music" now is manufactured drivil aimed at teeny boppers, not really about the music, it's about the look, some douchey looking knob with wavey hair staring lovingly into the camera and way too many crappy cover songs and derivitive nonense pop songs with repetitive or sexualized lyrics.

    Also there was lots to love for me growing up in the 90's, like I had a sega mega drive as a kid but my folks only let us set it up to play in the evening time on weekends or really rainy days where I couldn't go out and play.

    Later got like other games consoles like the ps1, N64 but it never stopped me from going outside. Played all sorts of games like tip the can, hide and go seek or just kicking a ball about, played in the woods, went cycling. I did all sorts. Stayed out all day and came home at a particular time for meals and God help ya if you came home late because you had no phone to be contacted on.

    Kids nowadays are getting very lazy by being allowed to have the latest games console in their rooms, telly's, dvds, even their own computer to access social media, the latest phone for texting mates and it's no wonder kids are overweight now from lack of going outside. I still live in the neighbourhood I grew up in and there isn't anywhere near as many kids out playing as there was in my day. There is a few that tear around on bikes and play kerbs which is great to see, the parents aren't pushovers, good to get kids outside, not natural having them in all day, every day.

    Not quite there with my young lad yet. Looking forward to getting him Lego technic. Loved that stuff when I was small :)

    I think kids are better off today, the only difference being that the lifestyle of a kid nowadays compared to early 80's is much more sedentary physically, this is purely down to play station wii, etc... also sports wise kids can't be arsed generally to kick a ball in a muddy irish field and won't play as much on street if at all... when such distractions did no exist as computer games there was more partiicipation.

    The positives are that kids are not subject to corporal punishment in schools which back in the day made education a sometimes frightening experience.

    F**k I'd love a big box of all kinds of lego now, I remember my cousin had this big huge box of lego, I didn't have a hell of a lot of lego when I was young so I'd go to his house and we'd build all sorts of mad imaginitive stuff. Kept us entertained for hours.

    LOL. The point of my post which you wholly missed is that the op is only looking for negative aspects of technology.

    OP could be rephrased "if you ignore the positives of technology and focus solely on the negatives, then is technology mostly negative for today's youth"?

    The cars drive automatically, one person steers with left and right, the other with A&C.

    I was going to post that your father probably said that, and your fathers father, until I copped it ;)

    Technology hasn't ruined kids per se, but easy access to porn is a worry. Sites like PornHub should require a subscription of some sort which would be enough on it's own to make most kids not bother as they're hardly going to ask for their parents card. I also find it sad to see my five year old cousin sitting inside on his own iPad playing games when the sun is shining outside. Go out and play Hide and Seek or catch for Christ sake.

    This may sound a bit stupid now but when I was younger, say 9,10,11 I'd entertain myself for a whole afternoon by turning my backyard into Croke Park or Lansdowne Road and play an imaginary game of football or soccer with myself. I'd be Colm Cooper or Robbie Keane scoring the winning point or goal by kicking the ball over or under a gate from an impossible angle. I just don't think children have that level of innocence or innovation to do that anymore.
