So it would seem that research does indicate that IQ varies around the globe and the jibe "thick paddy" may have just a grain of fact behind it.

Personaly having a daughter intending on going on to uni I take it with a pinch of salt but have a look and see if you agree or disagree

But on a good note we seem to be more "welcoming" than others around the globe

    No.

Don't know why people put such stock in IQ scores. They've been called out for being culturally biased for years. That map just lends stock to that criticism.

    Holy misleading Batman!

It's in the second ranking out of six. It's the same as France, Germany and Canada.

Leaving aside the dubiousness of that study, we still come in at joint 16th in the world.

I think we can introduce a new stereotype of the "thick Equatorial Guinean" if we go by the global iq rankings.

This IQ seems to equate to richer countries being top which frankly is just stupid.

iQ tests themselves dont measure intelligence.

They about as useful a guide to intelligence as hair colour.

Well Irish people have chosen these people to represent them
    - Charlie Haughey
    - John Bruton
    - Bertie Ahern
    - Brian Cowan
    - Enda Kenny

how could you accuse such a people of stupidity?

Does anyone actually take these kinda tests seriously?

IQ has a correlation with a lot of things, from what job you will work, how much you will earn per annum, how many kids you will have, to even what your potential lifespan will be. Some jobs around the globe in fact require an IQ test, because of these numerous correlations.

I tend to put stock in their accuracy.

    IQ + 'x' population = SFA.

Logical reasoning in the IQ thread

Expecting those Irish people (over there) to be able to see into the future is a bit too much of a demand on their intelligence in fairness.

Well, countries who elected George Bush, Gordon Brown, Nicolas Sarkozy, etc.

    Stupidity?

Some of our leaders are light years ahead of them.

IQ doesn't equate anything with anything. IQ CORRELATES with being rich (among other things). If you can't understand why that's fine but don't equate ignorance with knowledge.

IQ isn't a perfect measure of intelligence but it's really useful to estimate how successful people will be.

    What was your point again?

I love how the north is slightly cleverer than the south - it just goes to show how useless trying to apply IQ to a political territory is.

Don't underestimate IQ and the value some hold it in.
I have a child in my class with speech&lang delay and he missed out on getting resource hours at school by the tiniest percentage in his IQ test. Will not receive any additional help for rest of years in primary school because of this. Huge game changer for both this poor child and his very hard working, dedicated parents.

I think it's a bit rash to dismiss the usefulness of IQ tests.

It's not that they are necessarily a comprehensive indicator of a person's intelligence, much less their value in society, but I would have assumed they are a reflection of a particular type of general intelligence: that which is required for analysis, logical deduction and mathematical reasoning. In other words, the kind of traits required by employers.

I'm surprised that the Irish score is comparatively low by EU standards.

To be fair that's an issue with applying resources based on IQ. They could use a graduated system to better effect. IQ is the best estimate of potential we have and it happens to be really useful.

Forrest Gump demonstrates how a complete idiot could become successful but the movie was remarkable because of how unlikely it was. Yet people claim IQ testing is silly

My kid is doing his Junior cert this year.

They have one book/story to learn and it will be on the test.

When i did the Inter we had 9 books/stories and didnt know which 3 would be on it.

What was the sample size i wonder. It wouldn't surprise me anyway. Our best and brightest have been leaving our shores for generations.

This. Would be interesting seeing the results if they only took people wearing tracksuits of the streets.
