    Speaking in the Philippines yesterday:

Francis went into attack mode. "The family is threatened by growing efforts on the part of some to redefine the very institution of marriage," Francis told the crowd. "These realities are increasingly under attack from powerful forces, which threaten to disfigure God’s plan for creation."

Is the Pope catholic, and making the world safe for pedophiles?

Ah, my favorite line from "Drop The Dead Donkey"! Thank you!

I like Francis. Think he has a bit of integrity, is fighting as best he can against the established church. He also looks like Stan Laurel, which has got to be a plus!

Just a note to other readers of this thread

First of all, The 'Examiner' link in your post is not a link to the well-balanced Irish Examiner publication. It appears to be a secularist form of thejournal.ie.

Secondly, I cannot find a reputable website which has translated the words attributed to Pope Francis in accordance with your claim.

Certainly, he seems to have defended heterosexual marriage, although not quite in the trenchant language which you seem to attribute to him.

I wonder why you selected that particular quote, when it appears to be of such doubtful accuracy... .

Have you met the new leader of the Nazi party? Great guy by all accounts, fighting as best he can against the established church.

How thoughtful of you but I would hope the posters of Ah are capable of forming their own opinions. The church and its many representatives have told us what to think for long enough.

Also, I hope you won't object to me refusing to take marriage advice from an old virgin in charge of an organization that raped thousands of children for decades.

Don't know what he actually said, but seriously it's hardly a shock?

It might be for the new faction of After Hours posters (most of them probably call themselves atheists or other such terms), you'll see them out in force on the other thread about Francis. They think it's cool or sticking it to the man to defend the Pope's comments as just a bit of fun and admire him for seemingly not being as bad as the others and having a sense of humour or some integrity. Yes, I've seen the word integrity used. It's sickening.

You held firm and came back to the pending sh1tstorm that you created at 2am. Respect for that if nothing else. ;)

In not believing in god, mostly. Pizza toppings are a bit of an issue though, some people there are sick and think pineapple belongs on a pizza.

    Pope gives sermon to Catholics.

    Hold the front page!!

I often wonder what people want. Do people want the Catholic Church to just give up and not exist any more ?? If so this is an idiotic ideal and so will never do anything but poke holes in what is said.
If people would like it to change to a more modern forward thinking institution then Popes like the current one are the way forward, but change is slow in such a large old organisation. There is only so much change that can happen at any one time. Remember the year of the three popes, it's widely speculated that John the first was killed in his sleep as he demonstrated an inclination for rapid change.

The Catholic Church seriously needs to get with the times or face the reality of losing a great deal of followers. They can start by allowing same sex marriage and female priests.

They are too stubborn to ever change but they will not last another 2000 years unless they do.

You couldn't make it up. Head of RCC defends RCC stance on SSM. How can it be?

Not sure what all the fuss is about TBH.
The catholic church is a club. If you like their rules and beliefs then be a member. If you don't...then well don't be a member.
Most of those who criticise the church are not practicing catholic.

That is a bit like me, as a soccer fan, spending my time criticising the rules of Ladies Hockey.

The church has a major cultural impact which affects everyone. I think if religion was a private thing that didn't impact on anyone other than its members no one would care.

But it doesn't impact on everyone does it?
If this was 1950s ireland then I could see your point. But not in 2014.

In relation to SSM it might. Plenty of Catholics will vote against it because of the church's position. Any debate on the issue has a representative from a Catholic organisation even though it's a civil issue. The church still has influence, not as much but it's still there.

At some stage we are going to have to explain to the catholics that it's only secular marriage that the gays want. Catholics have a ceremony, cast their spells and also call that marriage.

This is nothing to do with the religious ceremony. Catholics will never be obliged to perform a gay marriage in their church so what is it to them? They are afraid that society will move further away from them and they will have to either change their position or continue to be further out of touch with their flock.

Solution? Prevent society moving forward... It's the Christian thing to do

Having an opinion Is one thing, trying to dictate what people can and cannot do and trying to stop people from being happy is another.

So they shouldn't express their opinion?

Express away. I just think the use of emotional and religious blackmail by the church try force their opinions on others is wrong.
