Right lads, urgent help needed with this as I need to know if I'll be able to drive home or will I need AA.

Knocking sound coming from the front left wheel. Starts slowly at about 20mph and gets louder and faster as the car speeds up.

The sound dissapears when I'm turning LEFT or UNDER BRAKING.

What could this be? Any ideas?

I know 0 about the cars, but having driven a car with a knackered wheel bearing it sounds similar to what i experienced, except it was more a droning noise that got louder with speed, not knocking, can you check it at all?

Bearing that are going bad though would generally make a whirring/ whirling kind of noise not a knocking noise although maybe I'm wrong I've just never heard of one making a knocking noise

is this in the 7er , turn the wheel fully to the left and take a look at the suspension bits with the torch on your phone, could just be a drop link failed or some such.

not exactly your problem, but could be relevant.

Was Reading on the dreamscience site it says all maps bar one will work even if the software isn't the latest.. How can I check what software is on the car now??

Is the car jumping about with the knocking? get under and grab the prop, twist it with your hand and if theres any kind of play at all it may be the double cardian (universal) joint(s) on the prop.

    Are ye close to home?

No, doesn't jump. It's just knocking and I can feel the knocking in the footwell.

Ah right, if it was in the prop I'd be sure enough that you'd be hearing it when you apply load regardless of direction.
Has to be a front arm or bearing.

When you get the handset there is a function in the submenus that lets you check software version.

Had my first brown trouser moment (one of many more to come i'd say) in the new car, loss of power, jerking and general crappyness, so i pull in and scan the car, turns up as misfire across all cylinders, great!, turns out it was a loose pipe :o

Jesus Pickles you have some luck with cars, but at least it was a easy fix.
