This was hilarious. If my father had spent as much money on me as I went across to america for the first time, and I had spent 12 days there and returned home, he would have whipped the hell out of me.

She sounds like a loon and if she took her head out of her over spoilt ass for more than a minute she would realise that: wifi is not available in the states outside most cities, free wifi is not available in apartments and the coffee is basically CRAP in the USA...

For someone who spent 12 days in Ireland she spent time in Killarney and they cliffs of Moher without a car? Sounds like someone who needs a kick in the ar-se rather than complain about a course she didn't understand (how did she get a post grad course anyway?) ]

I dont think she should be a writer for any site as she is obviously a nutjob of the pedo priest variety

So, 19-year old goes abroad in badly reserched trip and doesn;t enjoy herself. I did the same thing myself at that age (although not halfway roudn the world).

Is she unprepared for life in a foreign country? Absolutely.

Is she a "friutcake"? ****, no. Stop being silly.

Are people overreating because someone didn't **** glitter about their time in Ireland? Yes, Kent, yes they are.

Eh, no. It's quite clear from the vast majority of comments here that people think she's a tool because she blames everyone and everything but herself. I moved to canada and had an awful time. That was entirely my own fault, nothing to do with Canada or Canadians.

"Like the Type A personality I am."

I disliked this girl from the first sentence

What does that even mean? Is that blood type or what?

In the comments section they're talking about it. Apparently they all say it's the worst coffee in the country and there's far better pretty much everywhere else in Cork.

Eugh, fu(king coffee snobs. It's hot water and beans, that's all it is wherever you go. you can add all the cream and pumpkin and organic goat jizz that you like to it but it doesnt make a blind bit of difference.

She comes across as very immature and with the expectation that the whole world should be like Minnesota. But her family really should have intervened before she went to Ireland.
Coming out of clinical depression and going to live abroad to do a PHD she is not sure about to a city she has not researched...madness.

Bad news for her, if she drinks mocha, she doesn't like the taste of coffee.

I would question her "depression" as well. I've seen the effects of depression up close. people cant get out of bed let alone get on a plane and move country

Depression is different for everyone. What lands one person in bed with it, another can still be functional in the world.

As you walk out the gate of UCC, the first thing you will see is a big f*ckoff coffee shop, with outdoor seating and wifi. Coffee Station, I think it's called. I dunno how she missed it.

There's also Starbucks coffee served in UCC along with free wifi - so she actually didn't even need to go outside the grounds of the university to get it.

Well, it doesn't taste like coffee after all that.

And yes I'm a coffee snob. Coffee snobs get a bad name in this country. To be fair, you could find three Irish people and the chances of all three agreeing on which brand if tea is best is minimal. They'll be 2:1 Lyons or Barry's. And God help any bloke who catches a barman pouring a pint of Guinness the wrong way.
Coffee snobs aren't half as bad as tee and Guinness drinkers :)

Cork is a great spot, I could see how it could go wrong for a someone when they go someplace with the notion in the head that they will hate the place.

Also, much of the Student accomodation in Cork is foookin manky.

If you rented it without seeing it and price was your main factor then you may end up sleeping in a room that looks like it was used for a donkey show the night before.

I enjoyed reading that she basically ignored her intuition that something was wrong about the move and her start dates and passed it off as depression etc.

Sucks for her, but she'll live.

Last American girl that come to UCC from the States that I know ended up staying for about 5 years (instead of 3 months) and getting a husband out of the deal. I'd say the bint in the article has had an atypical experience.

How the hell do you register for a higher diploma and think it's a masters?

Her research on Ireland was definitely lacking - looking for Wifi and the like. Didn't she know we walk all around doffing our caps saying "Tap of the mornin to ya".

Its remarkable how people get sucked into the advertisers impression of Ireland.
Reality is, much of the country (especially urban) is a little bleak.

    Naive girl.
But so what, strange lands can be tricky to deal with.

My dad has "cancer" and I'd question the diagnosis myself. You should see him, going around and living his life and doing things healthy people do. I know other people with cancer who do things like lie in bed all day and die and stuff. My dad may have been diagnosed with terminal cancer by several medical professionals, but come on, if he doesn't act like the stereotypical cancer patient I'm familiar with, it can't be a legitimate diagnosis, can it?

    /Sarcasm

Seriously. Think about what you're saying there.

I've got a pretty similar attitude to tea drinkers to be fair but you have me on the Guinness. Still, I mean there's a right and wrong way to pour Guinness. Hardly snobby to expect a professional to pour it the right way
