Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Yeah none of mine disappeared overnight, it now says I've 50 stars expiring at the end of Jan. Yesterday it said 1500 were expiring at the end of Dec '14  I'll hold off & see if anything worthwhile comes up on it. A Snes Wii Upad would be nice Ninty!

Aye, something you can't get handy in a shop or whatever. Got one of those €5 activation codes from the premium site too, have €9.62 on the eshop now but not sure what to get. €7.99 seems too steep for SMW or Super Metroid (as brilliant as they are), especially when you already have the originals I guess. Maybe add funds and get Shovel Knight.

So you mean you didn't spend it all on ringtones and mobile phone wallpapers?

Seriously, I can't believe they're offering them on the store. The concept is hideously out of date.

I was thinking the same when I saw them - folk still care about their ringtone?? What was that awful ringtone craze a good few years back - crazy frog or something?

Modern gaming sucks.. Picked up Destiny last week and the poxy servers have been down more often than up since..

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 664 ✭✭✭Tomo.Murphy

I've been thinking about picking up Destiny for the PS3 for a while, but with network and server maintenance/outages it can be pretty off-putting. Plus I have a decent sized backlog to clear. I'm only getting around to GTA V now because my PS3 wouldn't install the update. Plus I picked up Far Cry The Wild Expedition for €20 a while ago and haven't even opened it yet. Not counting the Wii U games I got for Christmas. Why do we do it to ourselves? Ha.

So, you've yet to sample the joy of bullet sponge bosses once again?
The game is incredibly old fashioned, as if the FPS has regressed to some 8 years ago or more.
It looks great but it simply plays out in a very unsophisticated way.
Reminds me of Serious Sam, particularly when you are locked into an area and fighting wave after wave of enemies.

I got pretty hooked on Destiny. Have managed to get my character all the way up to level 31.

I bowed out at the final grind from 20-30. Just didn't have the time to put into it and by that stage I was completely sick of the lack of content. I still enjoyed my time up until that point which was a good 20 hours. Light point farming just isn't as rewarding as the grind in other games.

I got Destiny for free and still felt ripped off, if only because I realised that Bungie were effectively wasting my time, and demanding I waste more of it if I wanted to play the 'good stuff', which was a single mission.

Went back to playing Titanfall instead.

I don't know, my mother beat Mario Bros 3 last year and she's over 50.

I haven't played Mario World in a long time, so I can't answer for that, but I had little trouble finishing The Lost Levels.

Mario Bros 3 did give me a little trouble at times though.

You playing on Original hardware? playing at 60htz is a bit quicker than we remember alright.
Love SMB3, still play it every now and then, up until the last couple of levels on world 8 it's all pretty easy

some levels can be a bit hard as in you will loose 2 or 3 lives but over all its achievable to finish every level or you can go the warp whistle route like most people.

Are Vectrex's worth that much these days? Spotted one in a local second hand electronic store for a hefty enough sum.

Just finished GTA V. I had more trouble finishing the last 2 missions than I had playing through the rest of the game. Is it just me or are the police the only group from the three in the last mission that you can outrun? I tried every thing with Franklin to get away without shooting, but every time I lost them they just appeared behind me again...

Started packing up my games rooms today :( Baby bandit is on the way so room is to be converted to a silly nursery instead of a retro nirvana.
Most stuff getting boxed up and stuffed in the attic for the foreseeable future (Woodies have a decent 3 or 2 deal on storage bins which is great). Will probably sell some of it and have a fair bit of junk lying about too that'll get skipped.

Will be keeping a small retro section downstairs so I'll be able to setup one retro system at a time, which might mean I'll actually get more use out of them overall.

I've just finished rearranging my arcade(only
spare room in our apartment) to make way for the cot arriving next week.
Baby room looks awesome with a pinball and huge wooden arcade in it!

    Babies means more retrogames!
At least it did for me.
She Who Must Be Obeyed is at work.
I'm on my day off at home.
Cidonalad is in his cot/seat/springy thingy asleep.....
    It's gaming time!

Honestly, I got more gaming done in those days than since.
Of course, it explains a lot about how the boy is now more addicted to videogame goodness than I am.

Lucky you. I've had to take a gaming sabbatical.
My two lads, still young, sleep very little during the day and cry a lot. Reflux and other digestion issues.

Not a chance they would sit on their own! Frustrating at first until I accepted this is how it was going to be.

Apologies if I've scared any future gaming dads!

Watching storage wars in the background and they find a 2600 and a NES in one of the units. Guy claims it's a 001, the first model made and estimates them both at $2300.

Same here, kids = even less gaming time from my experience. Still worth it though.

How do they manage to do that twice in the same show? The one I saw was hilarious. The look on the guys face when he was told it was worth around $50 in working order was priceless.

Hopefully! We did get some more gaming time over the Christmas break - Lego City on the Wii-U is excellent, so much content crammed into that game. :)

With the combination of boozing and relatives visiting Christmas has been a total disaster for gaming for me. Would be better off back in work, I got far more gaming done!

Damn you Jebus for having your fake birthday at the same time Retr0 wants to play games.
Couldn't you, the Christian churches, not have predicted Retr0's coming and made allowances in the calendar for his gaming needs??
    Honestly, bloody religion

I'd be similar. I 100%-ed 3 or 4 long-ish games during essay/exam season, but since the holliers began, my game-time is drawn down to Binding of Isaac runs.

Just went to lash on a film on netflix.

'Popular on Netflix' - Birth of a Nation

errrr... should we all be racist now? What's the official line the church has taken on this?

It's a very hard movie to find so the fact that it's on Netflix is a big deal. Also it might be a disgusting piece of racist filth but it pretty much changed cinema forever with many of the techniques pioneered still being used today.

As a piece of cinema history well you kind of have to watch it.

I've no objections to it being on netflix, I know how important of a film it is. It's just a bit bizarre to see it in the 'popular' category. :D

I think I fall under both of those categories, ha. What are they?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

"Swap Magic" were boot discs for the Playstation 2, basically you booted the console using them and then swapped in a backup disc - you had to swap the disc without pressing the eject button though so all kinds of hacks and modded cases were available to do this.

"HD Loader" was a Playstation 2 application that let you install games onto a harddrive. This is a fairly rare DVD copy of it, Sony quickly sued the crap out of anyone selling it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,146 ✭✭✭CathalDublin

Haha, remember the cases they use to sell for the PS2?
I remember walking around Jonesborough market and every second person was walking out with a PS2 with flappy lid, funny thing is mod chips were well out at the time, I think it was just far more expensive to have one installed if you wern't very handy with a soldering iron
    ps2flipcover1.jpg

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,725 ✭✭✭The Last Bandit

Ya the Messiah chip was the first main one I think and definitely not a simple mod to install !!

  • Moderators, Category Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 51,820 CMod ✭✭✭✭Retr0gamer

You needed to be able to microsolder to install a PS2 modchip, it required someone very skilled and wasn't an easy job.
