A republic of Ireland Rugby team would do just fine without NI Brits.

Don't forget to exclude all those in the South whose opinions are anathema to you. You should be left with a team of world beaters.

Why expand the Manchester United's net to the whole UK. Why not just Manchester? Just one player in the entire squad.
If you want to make an argument that professional sports represent their locality. Why not have a squad of local Manchester lads? Guess why they don't? Because professional sports is a business who's goal is to make profits. If Manchester United bought out by a Japanese billionaire tomorrow and relocated to Tokyo It wouldn't change my support. I couldn't give two sh1ts about the teams location
My support for the franchise has nothing to do with its location or nationality of players.

I see that you didn't answer any of my questions. But in any case, ill chance one more...

Would you, therefore, support Man Utd if it were owned by a Manchester based unionist, and played 11 British like minded players each week, and changed its club crest to the Union Jack?

Oh, and were managed by a proud Knight of the Realm....

Why do you keep calling Manchester United a franchise? That is patently not what they are. For someone who is apparently a supporter of the club you come across as incredibly ignorant/ purposely disrespectful.

Agree, I wonder what the lads in the Stretford end would think of a fellow fan referring to their club as a franchise.
Perish the thoughts of having an Irish team made up of native Irishmen.

Ireland wouldn't be able to field a competitive team in the likes of rugby or football. Some of the most committed players for the RoI where not natives, Kevin Kilbane & Townsend, spring to mind.

Might have understood it wrong but I think the reason a lot of United (and presumably other big northern clubs) supporters (as in real ones from Manchester) don't get behind England is a political thing based in the North South divide in England.

I think the southern clubs are generally more well represented in England support although obviously not exclusively.

Could be wrong, just what I've heard from some Mancunians.

Nah, I am a Fulham fan and England is so-so amongst us. I know plenty of Chelsea die-hards and they are the same. The smaller towns in Northern England would be very strong supporters of the national team. Burnley was very hardcore when it came to England, for example. The Geordies & Mackems were too.

I never implied that all southern supporters support England or all northern ones don't.

There's definitely a trend there though for some supporters from the bigger north western clubs.

Do you reckon the likes of burnley and Bolton getting behind England could be along far right political lines? Or is that just general assumption.

You remind me of that Unionist politician who said something along the lines of 'I'd like to see a Northern Ireland Rugby team'. I can't remember who it was but I just remember thinking what a bitter twisted git he was.
    without NI Brits

How do you know they consider themselves 'Brits'? How do you know if they do/don't consider themselves of the Irish nation but politically British?

All Ireland sports organisations were one of the few cross-border cross-community things that managed to weather the troubles largely avoiding being drawn into sectarian/political squabbling yet here we are in 2014/15 with some people getting their knickers in a twist over this issue.

And it's people in the RoI who are getting their knickers in a twist, nowadays. The people of NI don't seem too hot and bothered about it. The same can be said about the Rory McIlroy Olympic saga. When he hinted that he wanted to represent Team GB, there was outrage down here, accompanied by a raft of anti-British remarks. On declaring for Team Ireland, I don't recall hearing one single negative remark from those in NI of a Unionist persuasion.

    Oh there were plenty.
These are all personal decisions but plenty of people on all sides seem to want to get involved.

Is Rory Best a native Irishman?

He is, he was born on the island of Ireland.
