I don't think anyone is expecting UTV Ireland to do broadcast ITN news.

Given that the traditional UPC/Cablelink package was the Irish channels plus the 4 main UK terrestrial channels, I would like them to continue providing precisely that.

Give us a version of ITV1 separate from UTV Ireland. They are not the same television stations.

utv owners want upc tv viewers to watch utv ire instead of Utv NI

if you want ITV get a satellite dish or move to a UK freeview area in Ireland

As has been mentioned before they could do it the way it's done in Canada re ITV in upc. When they show the same program have ITV change to UTV so they get the ratings and adverts etc. That's how they handle US channels.

I don't think anyone quite wants that - most Canadians aren't big fans of simultaneous substitution (particularly when it comes to the NFL).

. Not to mention the effect it has on how Canadian TV stations programme - their broadcast TV industry is structured so that simsubbing can be invoked the maximum amount of the time. For example, it would require the BBC transmissions of sporting events to be substituted with the RTE broadcast.

i wonder how the unionist community up north feel about this??

i mean utv of old was viewed as being very much pro-union and now you have them encompassing an all ireland format ?? bit odd don't you think

Big Corporations are only interested in money at the end of the day. (not trying to make the point that I am against that either).

Well I don't see why I should have to do that.

The service that I'm paying for is being unilaterally changed with no proper notification to customers.

I think we might keep the politics out of this one - the Ulster Television of Brum Henderson's day is long, long gone.

There isn't an all Ireland format, there's one channel for Northern Ireland and a separate one for the Republic.

It's no different to when Sky News introduced Sky News Ireland specifically for viewers in the Republic of Ireland. There was no formal notification required then either as it was a natural progression.

UTV NI is a foreign TV channel for which UPC paid to carry. Although the channel's remit was to serve the territory of Northern Ireland and was never aimed at the Republic, the channel was well aware of its popularity here, so the creation of the territory-specific UTV Ireland is a natural progression.

UPC decide which channels they want to carry based on customer demand. Carrying both UTV NI and UTV Ireland would have created a lot of programming duplication. However, if you feel so strongly about the changeover, then maybe you should let them know.

It's the only way that you will be able to receive ITV1 or UTV from northern ireland. A FTA satellite system is really not a bad thing to have.

but this new channel can be picked up throughout the island??

and its called utv ireland, it doesn't specify republic or north

No. Well, apparently the HD version can be tuned in through Other Channels for those with Sky HD boxes in the UK. It isn't on the EPG on any UK platform though.

As I say there are other places on boards.ie to talk about the politics, we might keep this strictly for the television and the broadcasting angle.

In political terms, the word 'Ireland' is the English-language name of the State of Éire. The name of the Republic of Ireland is used for jurisdictional clarity.

Non-politically, the term 'Ireland' refers to the entire island.

I guess it was UTV's call on what to name the station.

As waiting for a reply pointed out UTV could have thought outside the box.

IMO using UTV +1 as a second RoI channel available north of the boarder it would only provide programming it had access to across the island (I include repeats of UTV Live, ITN news, Ireland Live and GMB). This would be called UTV 2. Swapping ITN for Ireland Live as live news north of the border and itn news going live at 6:30 on UTV 2 in RoI.

But sure we don't like thinking outside the box.

Or RTÉ NN could broadcast ITN at 7

Yes. That DOG needs to be more transparent.

People are complaining about the brightness of the logo... seriously? It's bright because it needs to stand out and inform people the channel is here. People should be complaining about the lack creative and new content on the channel. Its schedule for January is horrible (and no I don't care its only a new channel, UTV has a brand has been around for years)...

UTV NI is gone and people need to realize this... There is no need for specific optout UTV NI feed available to the Republic as this would distract people from its core Republic of Ireland brand particularly advertisers and ITN News won't be much a loss especially if UTVI News stands up to the plate.

Its great a new competitor has arrived I really don't think the channel has much to offer in terms of new content which is a shame.... Ireland needs niche channels not generic general entertainment channels.

Seriously yes, I am complaining about the DOG. Compare the UTV DOG in
Northern Ireland with the UTV Ireland DOG. Which one is better?

As for content, I always knew it would be rubbish.

I bet they'll drop the UTV Ireland tag within a year and simply become UTV...

It's only gone from UPC, it's still there for everyone else.

What did they do at 19:25-19:30?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 17,219 ✭✭✭✭Galwayguy35

Sure there will be something on it to watch anyway, and it's costing us nothing unlike RTE.

TV3 must be reeling from the loss or Emmerdale and Corrie though.

I predict the UPC call centre will be busy tomorrow.

A lot of elderly people who watch UTV NI wont be happy. But it makes sense to replace UTV NI with UTV Ireland.

Ran a promo of what happened in the past year to get the channel up and running, what programmes were gonna be on it and some celebrities wishing the channel good luck
