Seems to be some confusion in the media between Gatwick and Heathrow.

Who's the idiot on sky saying they will spray the runway with foam to slow it down???

Foam is used to reduse the chance of fire caused by friction!

Strange decision to return to Gatwick. I thought Stansted was designated for emergencies like this.

Stansted is the designated airport for suspected terrorist threats. There is plenty of remote parking well away from prying eyes.

Is that Virgin a long time up not to be attempting a landing?

Had a similar experience of having to return to Dublin a few years ago after take off with locked landing gear but thankfully all was OK.

This has a fuel load to get to Vegas on it - it'll likely be over its maximum landing weight for starters; and secondly the less fuel on board the better for reducing fire risks.

A 747 can dump fuel but as it was circling over land its very unlikely they were dumping.

Well done to pilots and crew. This is yet another example of the expertise of these guys who step up and solve problems when it's needed most.

Looks like it's about to tip over

I wonder did the pilots transfer fuel to the left side of the wings and left the right wings empty prior to landing? That would surely help with the balance wouldn't it?

Yeah but then they would be very unbalanced in the air. Probably not a good idea.
