A recently published government report shows potential reserves of 130 billion barrels of oil and 50 trillion cubic feet of gas.

Jasus - may his mickey drop off at an inopportune moment.

May the fleas of a thousand camels invade his crotch and may his arms be too short to scratch ...

Why limit it to oil and gas? Seize all the farming land in the country while we are at it, to get all the profits from farming. No need to stop there, seize all private business assets and run them by the state so that we can all benefit.

No. Do you know how much it costs to look for oil and gas and drill wells? It costs billions and most don't find anything.

Let the private sector take the risk, not taxpayers.

Norway is best example for Ireland. Profits from natural recourses go into state pocket to support high standard of living of ordinary people and to pay high pensions.

"Norway doesn't award its oil and gas leases to the highest bidder. Rather, it awards leases to what the government determines is the best bidder, based on the company's experience, expertise and work plan to develop the field.

Norway deposits 100 percent of its oil and gas revenues into its sovereign wealth fund - worth about $540 billion as of late last month. It then withdraws an average of 4 percent a year to help pay for public services."

Again do you not understand the costs involved in actually searching for oil and gas in the first place?

    How do Norway manage?
Change shares of profit. 70%-80% into state pocket, 30-20% into investors.

Because they have large, proven reserves that are in relatively shallow water and easy to extract. Back when little was known about the available reserves, Norway too had a regime where the state took a smaller percentage, to encourage exploration. Now that the risk is lower for the oil and gas companies they can increase their take.

    1. 30% not enough for private investors? If you say no, then say your number.

    2. 25-30 years passed since Ray Burke was Minister for Energy, what has changed? Do people of Ireland profit from oil and gas?

The state certainly hasn't profited from oil that's for sure. Nobody else has either though. As for gas, we have two relatively small fields, one of which the state would have received don't tax revenue from, the other hasn't started producing gas yet so the state wouldn't have received any tax revenue either. So, in short, the state has received some tax revenue from our oil and gas industry but not a heck of a lot but then neither has any one else.
