Probably is true though that I voted on the basis of who she is as much as the goal.

But these awards are ten a penny for the likes of the other two nominees. It would be great to her get it for the sheer blindside way it garnered interest and the attention for the domestic game here.

The point about relativism is true though as a goal is a goal. That said, she's at a decent level in the womens game. Peamount also had a good run in the womens Champions League not so long ago.

    Small time this is.

It's a cracking goal...BUT it has to be put into context. Amateur players in an amateur league with poor players. I just don't know how on earth it got to the top three goals scored this year...defiantly because she's a woman I think.
Why definitely? If the "She's a woman" card needed to be played, surely that would have been done years ago? Why suddenly now?

    2014 year of Feminism?

Edit: voted as I thought she scored a class goal.

People can say what they like about restricting the entrants to certain levels of competition or goals scored against world class defenders but the fact remains that this goal found fame in its own right before there was any question of it being eligible for, never mind being a contender for the Puskas, in fact it was the fame that made it a contender.

It doesn't matter if it wins, it's groundbreaking to be there as an amateur, it's groundbreaking to be there as a lady, it's groundbreaking to be there as an irish person, it's groundbreaking to be there as a goal broadcast on social media rather than TV. (no particular order in the list of groundbreakingness)

We're surrounded by incessant bad news stories, fear mongering, health warnings and what not, so for once can we not just appreciate a genuine good news story.

And who would have engineered this nomination purely on the basis of her gender?

More Irish people have been promoting/spamming about this than there probably is combined international interest for the other goals worldwide in fairness. Good goal though but maybe not as prestigious a prize as some might think.

    Why is this in AH?
After a bit of discussion we have decided to leave this run for a while, an Irish sports person has done something extraordinary and people should know about it.

So, can I only vote via facebook or what's the craic?

    Why is this in AH?

Because it's news and its Irish. I hope she does win it though purely because she's irish.

I remember the day I first seen Stephanies goal. I was awstruck. It had the wow factor. I must have watched it a good 20 times in one day and plenty of times since. The touch, control, swivel, tekkers and trajectory of the finish was unreal. It had it all. RVPs was good but I definitely wasn't awestruck. Maybe because I know how capable he is. Put a ball like that into him and he will test the keeper every day. James goal was brilliant, great skills aswell but Stephanie Roche's pips it for me.

I've voted for her multiple times and will try to find ways to vote more.

Remember when Ronnie O'Brien was signed by Juventus?
In August 1999, e-mails circulated urging Irish people to vote for Ronnie O'Brien in Time's Person of the Century Internet poll, causing O'Brien to lead the poll, above those such as Albert Einstein and Martin Luther King. After the poll crashed due to attracting too much traffic, Time removed O'Brien from the running, restating the rule that "whimsical candidates will not be counted."

That was for no good reason at all. At least Stephanie scored a peach of a goal!

I voted for James' goal. He has a very special talent, the way he plays. Rare.

That strike from James was on another level completly to Roche's goal, bit of a joke if she gets the award!

Although Suarez from 40 yards against Norwich really should be the winner!

Women play some damn fine sports, I love women's tennis, golf etc but women's soccer is a horrendous thing to watch.

I think "best goal" should factor the play leading into the actual finish quite a bit so the quality of opponent should play a part. Either way, the other two goals are pretty great. Kind of think this is a situation where she'd be better off finishing third and not having some kind of backlash than winning it and it being deemed a bit of a bit of a joke.

Unless there's a cash prize for it, in that case she absolutely should win. The other two hardly need it and it'd be FIFA's fault for leaving it up to an online public vote, you know what happens with those things.

    How very clever.

Voted for her. Was the goal any good? ;-)

The thread has ended. The Puskas award has been summed up. You can still vote for X factor and I'm a celebrity.

All the cynics here saying that Stephanie Roche wouldn't have scored that goal against world class defenders or that the measure of a goal isn't just about the finish, but the quality of the opposition. But where were the world class defenders when Van Persie scored.......yards behind him, leaving him to head the ball unchallenged, which if we leave the finish aside, kind of negates the world class defenders argument. It could also be argued that the Wexford defender is as close or closer to Roche when she scored, than the closest Uruguay defender was to Rodriguez when he scored.

So maybe just maybe the world class defenders were a bit less than world class for both the Van Persie and Rodriguez goals, in which case its the finish in each case that you must judge rather than the club that each player plays for. I know that if Messi or Ronaldo had scored Roche's goal in a competitive game against any opposition, then there would be no argument, the trophy would be theirs.

Vote early and vote often you understand how we determine quality today. Puskas, the Hungarian founder of twitterski, would be proud.

I voted for James Rodriguez goal, its a much better version of Stephanie Roche's goal.

Van Persie seizes on an error by Ramos alright, but even still he has to power forward as fast as he can toward where he's expecting the ball to be. The ball is damn near out of reach but he was able to execute a fantastic diving header to get to it.
    It's an absolutely class goal!

With the Rodriguez one, there's some setup to justify why the Uruguayan defense weren't all over him.

It's nothing like it though? Great goal and all but I honestly said this even before she mad the top 3, Steph's goal deserves to be in the top 3. I honestly thought that Kasumi's goal (he was in the top 10) was better so I voted for Steph's and then on another computer voted for his. Of the three remaining, it's the best. The technique is everything and to be fair she would have done that against most defenders. The chest control, the heel flick over the defender's head and then the strike are all sublime. Anyone who thinks that it's a joke she was nominated at all (never mind top 3) clearly has no idea what constitutes a great goal.

I don't remember people giving out that Glentoran's goal that was nominated a couple of years ago wasn't a high enough level.

If you're going to pick a goal from those 3 then it would be the one you would most like to score yourself. Personally, I'd go for RvP's...not just the finish but the run, the quick thinking, the pass. Absolutely top class for me and not the type of goal you see often and it's in the WC against the holders. You'll see goals similar to the other two often enough and don't grab the attention nearly as much for me as Rvp's.

Then surely the point stands that his goal was better as he was able to capitalize and perhaps outsmart world class defenders.

Anyway, I voted for James Rodriguez. Young guy representing his country in his first world cup.

He was built up a lot by the Columbian fans and media, so a lot of pressure on him and he took in his stride and was by far the player of the tournament in my opinion.

To announce yourself on such a stage like that takes real class.

I believe context of the game itself should be taken into account too.
