Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I've definitely been a convert to Total Biscuit over the last few months but he has that really irritating habit of putting the word "frankly" in every single sentence.
There's a fella I work with who does the same thing.

It's a bit like football people putting "to be honest" anywhere it'll fit but neither their honesty nor TB's frankness are ever in question.

Great, every time he says frankly now im going to notice:pac:

I have to say i like his review style. I think he manages to most of the time talk about a game in a good critical way without letting his own opinion take center stage.

I feel like i know a lot more about a possible purchase after watching his vids. I dont get the same sense of the games being reviewed from most other reviewers. I did find him an aquired taste though, took awhile to appreciate his style.

I like the WTF videos, they don't help me that much with knowing if I'd like something but they are very good for helping me spot games that I really, really won't like due to some mechanic or visual aspect that might not come up in a decent written review. I like RPS for their reviews also.

I was thinking there was a massive gap in the market for a WH40K FPS.

    Sure enough:

from what I understand though WH40k games have been pretty **** lately. didnt one come out this year that got totally panned?

Space Hulk was released last year, and was pretty poor from what i read. It was more of a strategy/xcom style game though.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

Not even, it was a direct port of the board game and it took all the annoying parts of being a boardgame (slow to set up, slow to move characters) and replicated them on our screens. Terrible design, terrible execution. Unskippable animations of slow and clunky Terminator marines stomping across corridors, awkward interface causing mis-clicks and RAEG! I looked forward to that one in a big way and it was fking awful, I could only play it for about 10 minutes before giving up and wishing for my €20 back.

This, however, could be briulliant, but I'm not holding my breath. The Space Hulk brand means it's going to be very limited in its scope unless they're going to throw continuity out the window which will do nothing except enrage GW fans who are the people who will make or break this game. Even Space Marine that came out a few years ago - an incredibly fun game for any GW fan and a really well put together shooter for anyone else who was interested in that sort of thing had a real problem getting noticed (of course, being a part of the THQ doomed empire didn't help).

    Mordheim looks interesting:

And Eternal Crusade would interest me if it didn't say MMO - I got burned by the Star Wars thing - couldn't get past the fact that I fking despise MMO mechanics (standing there hitting something for 2 minutes with a lightsabre and it not being instantly dismembered is not something I'm prepared to tolerate). I've also just noticed that it's going to be F2P micro-transaction supported, so I'm definitely out.

There's a turn based, hex based 40k game coming out from Slitherine that looks interesting. I think it's going to be similar to the (popular from the genre) Panzer Corps.

It might turn out to be a grognard only affair given Slitherine's track record.

I was actually thinking of Kill Team and Storm of Vengeance. Both came out in the spring, and both were reportedly terrible

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

    Kill Team was alright...ish.

Space Marine was a brilliant game but that's a few years ago now. Great single player and totally under-rated multiplayer.

  • Moderators, Social & Fun Moderators Posts: 28,633 Mod ✭✭✭✭Shiminay

I enjoyed Kill Team for what it was - a simple Twin Stick shooter with loads of DAKKA. Funnily enough, it was also Unreal Engine 3 and used the same assets as the Space Marine game - it was released as a kind of teaser and is intended to be a prologue to the main game. I spent a lot of time playing it co-op on the 360 with my girlfriend, it was most enjoyable since we're both big 40k fans.

ME3MP was definitely the biggest surprise I've experienced in gaming in the last few years. I slated them for adding it, and expected a tacked on crapfest. What I got was one of the best MP experiences I've ever had (or at least in the last few years). So much fun, and a huge amount of content for it.

Hopefully DA:Inquisition MP will be half as good.

Got my new glorious master race machine.

    Intel quad core i5 at 3.40 GHz, 8GB DDR3 and a 970 GTX with 4GB of GDDR5.

Also have a spiffy SSD Hard Disk, Windows boots in less than 10 seconds.

Tested it out on Titanfall. Rock solid 60 FPS with everything max at 3840x1080 on my friends monitor (my own is just 1080p)

Feeling really stupid buying that PS4.

Seems to be the best value card when it comes to bang for your buck and 4 GB of GDDR3 means its well future proofed. This PC is a massive upgrade from my old dual core machine so not sure how big a leap it would be over a 6970.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,930 ✭✭✭✭TerrorFirmer

The 6970 is very outdated at this stage - it's still an OK performer, but it's performance is the same more or less as a €100 GTX750 - which uses about a third of the power!

R9 290 and GTX970 are the best value cards at the moment. Either would be twice as fast as the 6970.

TR on Cobalt, but only like BR30 or so

made a couple of placeholder characters too, as am considering getting the anniversary bundle (so the other chars would get the 6month heroic boost also (?))

I think they should get it alright. I know there were some cases where people didn't and SOE were looking into it.

I'm after ordering a new laptop over the weekend since my old one broke down a few weeks ago, kind of curious what games it should be able to handle - Intel i5 4200M 2.5GHz (3.1ghz turbo), Intel 4600 HD graphics, 8GB ram.

I'm not looking to play the overly demanding GPS stuff, more just a few titles like Civ 5/BE, maybe FIFA, etc. Also, can anyone recommend any other games similar to Civ or the likes (eg. something you can play more passively and extensively over a long time period per game)?

Would appreciate any suggestions in advance, cheers!

It should be pretty OK for FIFA and BE at low settings and similar games, though it wouldn't be able to handle anything graphically intensive like Far Cry, Call of Duty, Battlefield etc. Sports, some strategy, and indie titles should largely be OK.

Cheers, that's grand then - all I'm really looking for, wasn't expecting much joy on the FPS type front but barring the GTA games (which don't really even count in that bracket) I haven't been into them for a few years for whatever reason.

It'd still run TF2 or CS:GO - anything Source Engine really, won't be amazing, but it'll definitely be playable.

Went with the EVGA FTW ACX 2.0

The clock and boost speed are on par with the 980 card buy obviously lacks the cores that the 980 has.

Looking forward to seeing how it runs :)

Nice man, should hopefully squeeze even more out of it. 1500/8000MHz is achievable on a lot of these cards.

Thinking about an upgrade myself if/when I get my xmas bonus. Got an i5 (sandy bridge), motherboard and 8GB RAM in early 2012 and a 660ti in early 2013, so chronologically, the CPU/motherboard upgrade be due next. However, I'm thinking an upgrade to a 900 series card would be a better bang-for-buck upgrade. Am I right?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,775 ✭✭✭✭Gbear

I mentioned it in the Upgrading forum but the r9 295x2 is currently available on overclockers.co.uk for under £500. It utterly demolishes a single 980 for £20-£100 more.

Personally, with the 390x not too far down the road I'm not sure it's worth it but it sounds like just about the best deal you can get for a GPU at the moment.

I've the same i5. I've not really noticed any game giving it trouble. A 970 (or whatever) would be a noticeable upgrade over a 660ti though.

The 295x2 is still silly money though and far more power than any single 1080p monitor system needs now or in the next couple of years.

    So's the 980.

Even the 970 is probably overkill.

I don't see why you'd consider more than a 970 for 1440p. Maybe triple monitor displays, or if you're recording footage you might want more but the 970 now is providing the kind of performance surplus I'd expect from a £350+ card a few years ago.

Even a 980 struggles to max out 1440p for the newest FPS' or the likes of Crysis.

And particularly with 100hz+ monitors now being all the craze there's plenty of room for all those extra frames for games where they would've previously been overkill.

Haven't a clue. I'd say it just gets into silly territory at the high end and you're having to pay a huge premium to eke out that last few %. It's probably not economical to do it with one card.

The thing is, people who get 1440p screens tend to be enthusiasts and the sort of people who're happy to shell out for Crossfire or SLI anyway.

True, SLI won't help with memory issues though. I wonder if 1440p becomes standard if we'll see 6GB cards at mainstream prices.

Is there anything good coming out...? I feel like I've fallen out of touch with gaming. I just play counter-strike for a few hours a few times a week to get my fix. Anything else doesn't seem to hold my attention for very long.

Sorry probably the wrong thread. I didn't read the "off-topic" part.

1440p is between standards I'd say.

It'll probably stay as 1080 for most people and then jump to 2160 in 18 months time or so.

The 6970 is very outdated at this stage - it's still an OK performer, but it's performance is the same more or less as a €100 GTX750 - which uses about a third of the power!

I'm still on a 6970 and I only have to turn down a few settings on a 1080 monitor so it will do me until they come out with a more definitive spec for Occulus Rift
