Upper class means when you go to work your name is on the building. Middle class... It's on your desk and working class it's on your shirt 😄

Very tidy chief, I like that. :pac::pac::pac:

Me? - I'm firmly working class and proud of it!

Is one allowed to be Middle Class and proud of it? :D

You're just as bad as those people you claim look down on others.

Not really, I look up to BOD and Bono

I'll think you find that having a 110% mortgage on the place (which is probable in negative equity) is not the same as 'owning it.':D

So? Looking up to one or two middle class or upper class people doesn't eradicate the snobbery you show by looking down on people who are lucky enough to be more financially privileged than you.

Is it true that you used to own the place, but transferred it to you missus just after NAMA was set up?

I would have thought that one of the prerequisites of being upper-class is that you don't have to go to work - you live off 'old' money!

As I said, I dont look down on upper class ppl. If anything I look up to them cos they are so well off yet im struggling with bills, rent and the rest. Its tough living like that

Question - say someone that left school at 16, never worked, lives in social housing. Thinks going to Bingo is the highest art form. Last night they won 100m on Euro millions.

What class would you put them into today?

    Lucky class.

They're just simplifications people use that lead to elitism once they become cliche.

Personally I don't think it matters, people are people at the end of the day working class or not.

Middle class for me is anyone who went to college and earns over 30 k a year.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,395 ✭✭✭✭mikemac1

What about tradesmen? They are skilled, have their papers and will earn over that

Someone who is educated to at least third level, works in a profession, shows descretion about money, doesnt swear, has lovely manners, looks after their teeth and general grooming, good command of the English language, has social conscience = middle class to me usually.

When I think of the Working Class I think of the likes of Larkin & Connolly, The Great Lockout, factories & socialists.

When I think of the Middle Class I think of counter-revolutionaries.
