Ill say it again: x52 or x52 pro. The game was designed to run out of the box with that model of stick. Buy it. You wont be dissapointed (have had mine 4 years no issues).

Find me somewhere that sells it for 50 quid or less and I'll pick it up. Else I'll just stick with my 3D pro. Not everyone wants to spend €180 on the x52. ;)

I found the x52 on amazon for £110. But no, not going to spend multiples on controls for a game than the game itself.

Ended up buying this for £39, free postage.

It will be interesting to see how the reactions differ here as opposed to Diablo 3 for example .

I miss Microsofts old Sidewinder division. Their Force Feedback Pro was amazing, and made stuff like Comanche and Werewolf a joy. Decent chance it did damage to your wrist mind.

I loved my force feedback pro. The demo with the lightsabers sold it for me. shame teh force feedback never really took off in games though.

I spent way more than i could afford at the time on it though.

Edit: In fact even without adjusting for inflation it cost more than teh X52pro costs now, what 20 years later? was £129.00 if i recall correctly which in euro would be €163.00. And i do recall correctly because spending that hurt.

So wipe for patch 3.09 hits today, with another full wipe to follow on Saturday.

Maybe they need to wipe today for technical reasons, otherwise maybe there is an end of beta event?

I am hoping/half expecting that when we log in we are sitting behind the controls of an anaconda, or maybe the new orca, or maybe just with 200million credits sitting in our accounts. Since it is only a two day window to the next full wipe I imagine there will be some sort of bonus there for us.

Who wants to play a game of "chicken" in a pair of anacondas?

    So logged in yesterday.

No shiny new anaconda or 200million credits in the bank following the wipe. Something much much better: I can log in first time, I no longer CTD as soon as I open maps and no longer crash on hyperspace.

Also I like the big "sunroof" window on the sidewinder - was that there before? I probably had not figured out how to look around the cockpit before i upgraded last time so hard to be sure.

Anyway I am delighted with the stability fixes.

The trade route data in the commodity screen is also nice.

repair costs have rocketed. I have self destructed my sidewinder twice to avoid paying them.

Seems if you are in BETA you get to start the game and progress from the 22nd of November ahead of the full release in December. I just discovered this evening that progress carries into the full game.

hopefully the Gamma release on 22 November will be more stable than the current version, which at least for me crashes to desktop constantly.

Quoting myself - not sure if that is a breach of ettiquette?

Anyway I do so because they have announced pretty firmly today that there will be another full wipe on December 16th - so progress will not carry forward.

Which tbh is fine with me, though i was looking forward to starting "for real" on Saturday.

I do think they have made a mistake by wiping yesterday and again on Saturday and then announcing another will follow for launch - it all just underlines the futility of progress in the interim and tbh is demotivating me to throw myself into gamma in any serious way. Two wipes so close on each other together with an announcement of a third to come on 16/12 just reinforces the idea that progress is pointless pre-launch. On top of that they had raised expectations that progress after Saturday would count, so the U-turn increases the demotivating element.

But having said all that I hadn't originally expected progress to carry from beta into launch so its not really a big deal.

I am thrilled with the stability of 3.9 which is a much bigger deal :)

Agh, I thought we get to keep stuff from Nov to release? Yeah, seems a bit pointless going through the motions again just to be wiped again.....I might just do some piracy for the craic

Nope, that was the plan, now they have announced that there will be a full wipe on December 16th (launch day).

Who is upset at no SP offline mode?

After gamergate i dont get gamers anymore......do we just need something to moan about? This is game perfectly playable in SP but you will need to be online for it. Seems rasonable to me.

Do we just bitch for the sake of bitching.......

Well what is reasonable to you may seem very unreasonable to someone else.
Nearly all online requirement games have issues. Weather its log in,server down time,no internet no game basically!
Also not everyone has super fast or unlimited broadband so it may be an issue for them.

I prefer to judge people as i meet them and find the term "gamer" a massive generalisation. All manner of people play games these days. Yes there are arseh**es playing games but assh**les are everywhere. They are in every community. I didnt like the whole gamergate affair,i thought bought sides lost sight of there stated goals and it ended up being mud slinging and slander. Not very pleasant stuff really.

Seems to be the same arguments as against always online DRM with single player games as usual. There isn't an upside to the need for a connection here for players but there's a very large downside if you play games away from the internet or on a dodgy internet connection. Players naturally ask what's wrong with something like the Steam DRM that allows offline play.

Or did you miss the bitching about Diablo, HoMM, SimCity and similar before now?

Anytime I load up now the start option is greyed out. Do I need to do training missions before I start or am I missing something.

  • Moderators, Computer Games Moderators Posts: 10,972 Mod ✭✭✭✭Andrew76

Greyed out Start happened for me too after upgrading to Gamma. Exited out and went back in and it was fine.

Seeing as they've put me miles from anywhere familiar I decided to head to another station to try and get some missions - was getting crappy lag coming out of supercruise and then the game just crashed. Servers down or something.

Think I'll come back to it later tonight or another day when things have settled down (and probably some more patches to upgrade to).
