Abuse of charity?

I had a chat with a guy I know last night. He was telling me his parents had moved, from a council house they bought in 2006, into rented accommodation. They had to have a double rent for their moving in date, and he was laughing that they got 200 from SVdP in one town, 200 from svdp in the town they were moving to, 300 euro from a Sinn Fein councillor, a 50 euro voucher for dunnes stores from one of the svdp, and will get another one next week, and they got money from the community welfare officer to buy stuff for the house.

I know this family through my brother. He was in school with their son, back in 2004-2006, (when they bought the house).
They got more mortgage than they actually needed, because I remember they bought a 2006 car with the left over money. From me knowing them since 2004 they changed their car every year up until this year.

They went to Spain this year and are going to Leeds at the end of this month for four days. Their daughter has an iPhone.

To say I'm disgusted is an understatement. I'm a bit surprised charities hand out cash so easily. And there is absolutely no sign of any personal responsibility. It's living a champagne lifestyle on a lemonade wage, that everyone else
Pays for.

I would agree with the above post. I prefer to give charity money to local, transparent charities. There is a great one in my locality that would be my main one and they hold a meeting every year to explain what every cent they received went on. They also take donations if items of your reluctant to hand money over.

Charities attitudes are if you are coming to us, you must be in a bad place. Like the soup kitchen in will have the odd student looking for a free meal. But they never return as it isnt worth sitting in the middle of homeless people.Its not fair for charities to put in place restrictions that could slow giving money to people who need it, because the odd few abuse the system

Did you tell that guy he is parents are ****ing disgusting for abusing charity? I dont know how they can sleep at night abusing generosity.

His son is living with a good friend of mine, for your information. Their son is nothing like them either, he actually works and lives within his means.

Also, she's 14. A 14 year old does not need an iPhone if they're so destitute they need handouts

Happens Lexie, I work for a charity , we got caught by one tosser this year for about 90 euros .Even when challenged he felt he was entitled to it .He gave us a spiel about needing to visit a sick child , turned out he just want a new pair of trainers.

Have you reported this to the SvdP?
They operate on good faith and often in a "better safe than sorry" approach and I find it disgusting to see them taken advantage of.

I was buying two phones for me and the missus - and I'll tell you the iPhone was out of our price range.
If they are scamming charity and she is knocking about with an Iphone it is a disgrace.

I had dealings with SVdeP many years ago and they were always being taken for a ride by chancers. No matter how often this was pointed out to VDP they kept handing cash to the wrong people. We have another charity locally that does their research before handing out aid and they are the ones that get my annual donation now. I will not give to VDP after seeing how they waste their funds on the wrong people.

I will not give a cent to that charity because of what i have witnessed over the years with people with absolutely no need of handouts getting them time after time

would it kill them to ask the poor unfortunates to supply bank/credit union statements bills etc before they hand over vouchers/cash

I know some people are very stuck but i have seen too many taking the p1ss

Well, a lot of folk'll do that sort of thing if they can, unfortunately. May I ask, why did they move out of a house that they've owned since 2006 to enter the currently precarious rental segment?

I've had to give up volunteering roles because of people like the ones Lexie describes. This time of year you'll get people putting on the poor mouth needing food or gifts for the kids. 9 out of 10 times these people were well able to afford cigarettes and alcohol or could go down the bookies. It was very frustrating because you knew these kids were suffering and yet their parents were either too selfish or too stupid to see what they were doing. The charities themselves know the score but they know if they don't help the kids will have nothing.

Lining the pockets of charity admin staff is not something I'm interested in.

I helped my father with the Lions Club xmas food hampers over the years, I remember thinking it was such a bloody farce, some people we'd deliver to would have new cars in the driveway. It was obvious a good 75-80% of the recipients weren't in need of such aid. They'd be only laughing at ya for being such bloody mugs.

I used to volunteer with SVdP at a youth club in Dublin's inner city. Most of the kids there had iPhones, swanky clothes etc. but were absolutely poverty stricken when it came to attention and actual care.

They were lavished with all these gadgets and material goods but a lot of them were underfed (not skin and bone, but tiny and clearly lacking in a balanced diet).
