Awful idea... Germany on Sunday sucks.
Just be thankful you didn't live in Germany in the 80's. Shops closed at midday on Saturday's too back then!

Bollocks to that. Give me a nice, warm shopping centre with shiny trinkets and warm coffee any day over getting your shoes all dirty or being raped by, like, squirrels.

I hate to break this to you on a public forum, but that was probably a man in a squirrel costume.

It might accidentally teach some people forward planning, but I accept that's fairly unlikely.

Oh, yeah, excellent reason. Never thought of that. THe shops close on a Sunday and suddenly everyone's completly clueless and disorganised to the point of an apolalypse.

    I had noticed that.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

I do remember the olden days. And it was a pain in the a&&. A bit like being in France on your holidays on a Sunday, or Spain during the siesta. But do we need shopping malls (or whatever they are now) open all day on Sundays? Possibly not, but obviously it's a huge convenience. But it's not like the world will end. We definitely need corner shops alright. I guess in a world where people work all week and only have 2 days off, then you need every shop possible to be open on Sundays. And retailers respond to that, they wouldn't be open if they weren't making money. It is a bit 'no rest for anyone at all though'. But then again, your choice what you want to do on the day in question. You don't have to be battling the Walking Dead in IKEA. You can go on a weekday night instead :)

People would then have more time to spend posting their opinions on message boards. I'm sure Marx wrote something about the lumpenproletariat having a Sunday off after spending the week grafting and toiling.

There are some business in Ireland, especially SMEs, where if you cut out 52 days of making money in a year would easily go under.

In saying that, I work part-time in a café and I swear there are some Sundays where I doubt he even come close to breaking even.

Oh yeah, and the worst thing about no shops open on Sundays? NO PHARMACIES. No cystitis drugs, or antihistamines, or tampons, or cold and flu stuff. Chemists are a marker of human achievement.

I moved to Germany recently. Shops being closed on a Sunday would be fine if I wasn't always so damn hungover on a Sunday and in dire need of a trip to the supermarket for an almighty feast. :(

    Yep, very unlikely to happen.

A lot of places close up in limerick for Sundays as well. I found it bewildering. Had nothing to do for a few hours after checking out from a hotel and waiting on a train.

Yes it's important shops are open on Sundays. Why shouldn't we shop on Sunday if we want to. As long as shop assistants are happy to work I'm happy to shop. It's 2014 not 1950.

You have six other days of the week to do this

Why settle for 6 when you can have 7?

Not only should everywhere be open on a Sunday. Everywhere should be open 24/7 365 days a year.

I consider being able to go to a cinema, a restaurant, a cafe, a shop, etc., on a Sunday an improvement in my quality of life over not being able to do those things.

That's no good if you twist your ankle on a Sunday in Brussels and it swells up to twice it's normal size. You can't plan for everything.

As a student who's busy midweek, I also rely on Sunday wages. Businesses aren't forced to be open and people are not forced to be customers.

It was like that here until the mid-late 90's....always knew it was coming up to Christmas when the shops would open on a Sunday.

If shops in Ireland did this, people would be up in arms about how backward and religious we are, how embarrassing it is to the country, its the 21st century etc.

But its done in Germany. As we know, everything and anything Germans do is right and perfect, so they've to twist it as some "Quality of life" rubbish.

Worked in Superquinn in the 80's. Late opening on Thurs & Fri till 9 only. Closed at 6 sharp on Saturday and only opened on Sundays at Xmas. Good old days. Hate Sunday shopping. And that stupid Liffey Valley ad that used to be on the radio. "Its like a day out". Yeah, if your idea of a day out is walking around in a mental home.

This seems like a non-issue to me.

If nobody goes shopping on Sundays, businesses will stop opening on Sundays as they won't make any money. If people want to go shopping on Sunday, they will have to go to shops that are open and that means money for the shops. A natural equilibrium will form that represents the collective desires of the community.

So you support crossing pickets then?

Sure. At least, if I'm understanding correctly. If you're an employee who is willing to work on Sunday, go work on Sunday.

The concept of everything closing on Sunday gets old very fast. You can't get anything done. If you haven't bought food the day before it's starve, McDonald's or a petrol station.

I f**king hated it when I lived in France. Especially when it's Government-enforced like it is there. It's essentially just ripping away a freedom for the sake of imposing on you what the Government says you should want.

If people wanted to rest on Sundays (sit around all day), then the shops wouldn't be busy on Sunday. But they are, every week. Despite what they say, people like being able to get things done during their free time.

The fact that it stems from a religious commandment just adds insult to injury. I prefer not to be commanded. Let people do what the f**k they want.

    Unadulterated nihilism, so?

You should be grateful for religious diktat. It is the only thing protecting your soul from the abyss of totalitarian materialism.
