No Shops open on a Sunday

I was in Hamburg recently and next to nothing was open on the Sunday, it was unfortunate for my trip as it was only a short stay but I found the concept pretty damn awesome.

With automation I could see how the essentials could be provided. My only concern would be for people who could not afford to earn money Monday-Saturday say like for example Students. Now in Hamburg they did a bumper Saturday

Imagine a day were everybody was off, massive for all sorts of relationships.

Do you feel it it is very important for the shops to be open on Sundays? 191 votes

I've always wondered why an omnipotent, all powerful deity would even need to rest at all.

I remember a time you couldn't get the Sunday papers until Monday.

If no shops ever opened on a Sunday I'd have to do all my shopping online.

Online shops should close on a Sunday too

We used to have them that way here as well, iirc.
    It's great having them open

A pity God didn't make the world on Sunday and rest for the other six days!

The Germans respect their workers, you see.

We should be able to buy whatever we want at any time of the day, week or year. There are no excuses. We are a modern 24/7 society.
A friend of mine over in the a back arse of no where part in South Korea can wake up at 3am and go a get a beer from his local shop any day of the wee if he wants.

They have a special police force who go around checking to see if you are working. I'd hardly call that respect. If someone wants to work on Sunday why should the state stop them?

Taking away a time-and-a-half shift doesn't sound like respect ;(

Same in France, really hard to find anything open on a Sunday.

I feel pretty old if no-one here can remember a time when it was like that in Ireland too. Local corner shop opened for the papers for an hour after mass, but other than that, that was it - everything was shut for the day. Smokers lived in fear of getting caught short on cigarettes, and having to get them in the local pub instead.

**** that. Pain in the arse, beleive me.

Give me one good sane reason why there is a day that the shops have to close all at the same time. And I do not consider "religion" or "tradition" sane reasons.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Same in Belgium. Don't even see beggars on Sunday. Even the homeless take the day off.

OP its great until you have to live in a Germany city. I lived in Munich for the Summer and if you ran out of something on a Sunday. It was basically tough. Stuff from a petrol station is super expensive and tends to just be snacks. There is no bread or other stuff you find in a typical Spar. You also have to deal with the fact everyone is shopping on a Saturday to have food for Sunday. Some days you would wait for an hour in the queue in Lidl as everyone is buying stuff because they cant on Sunday

If your only reason to spend time with loved ones on Sunday is because H&M is closed. You really need to revaluate your life

    Quality of life.

It might accidentally teach some people forward planning, but I accept that's fairly unlikely.

That there's more to life than scrabbling for the next penny. Given your leanings I doubt you'll accept any explanation given.

You man people might actually have to spend time with their family????

Its a great idea, cant our society survive one non commercial capitalist driven day?

Also the people who are voting yes are probably the people who would never or have never worked a Sunday in their lives. Others might enjoy the extra overtime pay.

Awful idea... Germany on Sunday sucks.

Most people only have 2 days off which happen to be Saturday and Sunday. Why close on one of those days? It sucks...

So people have two days off?

So people know they are guaranteed one day off on a specific day regardless of cirucumstances.

Do they not own fridges or freezers?

Ive met parents who class a day traipsing around a shopping centre, a
Sunday out for their children

NO. A warm coat and a pair of wellies traipsing around a wood or a park is a day out.

Id have no problem with shops being closed on a Sunday.

How does one converse with the mentality of the slave-driver?! We have been socially conditioned by the Elites to accept that constant toil is our birthright. And we stand aghast when other countries have the temerity to treat their citizens as human beings.

Why are they laughing, in those cages?

But such is the tenuous nature of our grasp on Truth.......

Bollocks to that. Give me a nice, warm shopping centre with shiny trinkets and warm coffee any day over getting your shoes all dirty or being raped by, like, squirrels.

Just be thankful you didn't live in Germany in the 80's. Shops closed at midday on Saturday's too back then!

Oh, yeah, excellent reason. Never thought of that. THe shops close on a Sunday and suddenly everyone's completly clueless and disorganised to the point of an apolalypse.

    I had noticed that.

I do remember the olden days. And it was a pain in the a&&. A bit like being in France on your holidays on a Sunday, or Spain during the siesta. But do we need shopping malls (or whatever they are now) open all day on Sundays? Possibly not, but obviously it's a huge convenience. But it's not like the world will end. We definitely need corner shops alright. I guess in a world where people work all week and only have 2 days off, then you need every shop possible to be open on Sundays. And retailers respond to that, they wouldn't be open if they weren't making money. It is a bit 'no rest for anyone at all though'. But then again, your choice what you want to do on the day in question. You don't have to be battling the Walking Dead in IKEA. You can go on a weekday night instead :)

People would then have more time to spend posting their opinions on message boards. I'm sure Marx wrote something about the lumpenproletariat having a Sunday off after spending the week grafting and toiling.

There are some business in Ireland, especially SMEs, where if you cut out 52 days of making money in a year would easily go under.

In saying that, I work part-time in a café and I swear there are some Sundays where I doubt he even come close to breaking even.

Oh yeah, and the worst thing about no shops open on Sundays? NO PHARMACIES. No cystitis drugs, or antihistamines, or tampons, or cold and flu stuff. Chemists are a marker of human achievement.

I moved to Germany recently. Shops being closed on a Sunday would be fine if I wasn't always so damn hungover on a Sunday and in dire need of a trip to the supermarket for an almighty feast. :(

A lot of places close up in limerick for Sundays as well. I found it bewildering. Had nothing to do for a few hours after checking out from a hotel and waiting on a train.

Yes it's important shops are open on Sundays. Why shouldn't we shop on Sunday if we want to. As long as shop assistants are happy to work I'm happy to shop. It's 2014 not 1950.

Why settle for 6 when you can have 7?
