It's even a big step up from the price that existing customers would have payed on uStream. And $34.95 is a big chunk to try and get people to pay who might be new to New Japan looking to sample the product.

Tbf it was that price on ustream last year.

Was it not $25? Or was that the year before?

    Nope both years were $35.

I suppose that they were usually $25 must have confused me (and I didn't buy this years). Still think $35 is at least $10 too high for an untested, unfamiliar product in a new market. Especially with the HD add on.

Wrestlekingdom looks like it is going to be an 11 or 12 match show WITH an intermission. fit that into your 4 hour PPV window.

If they consider the announcement of announcers for the Tokyo Dome show a huge announcement then they've really got to work on expectations management.

    Its Jim Ross.

NASHVILLE — Jim Ross, the preeminent voice of professional wrestling for the past four decades, has agreed to provide the play-by-play for Global Force Wrestling’s presentation of New Japan Pro Wrestling’s “Wrestle Kingdom 9” live on pay per view in North America on Jan. 4, 2015.

The Hall of Famer has called more pro wrestling PPV events than any broadcaster and is regarded as the greatest, play-by-play announcer in wrestling history. He will be returning to the mic at one of the biggest events in the world. This is the 24th year of NJPW’s annual extravaganza at the Tokyo Dome, where more than 40,000 fans from are expected to attend.

“I am truly honored and excited to have been asked to be a part of this historic event,” Ross said. “To be able to return to my roots and to provide play by play for an amazing, pro wrestling product will be special. I never thought I’d ever return to ringside for a wrestling event but this opportunity was just too special to turn down.”

GFW founder and CEO Jeff Jarrett said he had been working on lining up Ross for weeks.

“When you think of the great events in wrestling over the past 30 years one of the things they have in common is the man behind the microphone. And that man is Jim Ross,” Jarrett said. “I’m excited for this event, and I’m excited for good ol’ JR to be a part of it. GFW fans wanted him, and from day one we have said we’re going to give our fans what they want.”

The show, which will air live at 2 a.m. ET (11 p.m. PT) and re-air in prime time at 7 p.m. ET (4 PT) is available on DirecTV, Dish, AT&T U-verse, Comcast, Verizon Fios and all cable systems in the United States, and in Canada on Bell ExpressVu TV, Rogers, Shaw, Sasktel and Telus. Check your local listings for availability. The show also will be available on the “Flipps” app on iTunes and Android.

This year’s card is headlined by an IGWP heavyweight title match between Hiroshi Tanahashi and Kazuchika Okada. The Bullet Club, of which Jarrett is a member along with AJ Styles and IWGP tag team champions Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows, will appear as well.

The show will be available in English and in Japanese via the second audio program (SAP) button on your TV.

... JR is one of the biggest names in the industry full-stop, never mind that no-one can touch him as an announcer. It is a pretty huge announcement to be fair and I'm looking forward to it!

I thought that that was a big enough announcement to warrant even more of a hullabaloo being made about it. It's great to see J.R back doing what he does best. I'd say he'll attract people!

He's a no brainer household name wise and he also has a large platform for promotion with his Twitter and podcast. However he doesn't have the greatest rep for pronouncing Japanese names correctly. Also less of a nitpick and more of an actual problem is that he really needs to learn everyone's signature moves and finishers as his announcing style is very nearfalls drama based.

Hope it isn't a phoned in performance where he talks about drinking sake and Honda motors. But I do hope he joins the Bullet Club. :P

Note to Jim please don't say:

    "He Pearl Harboured him"

As good as JR was (and likely still is) I'd also have to question how well he knows the product. Hopefully he spends the next couple of months doing his homework as this is a massive show so he can't afford to screw up and potentially ruin his reputation.

If they can get a good colour commentator who knows NJPW with him I can see it working.

They should, um, you know, um, get, you know, ah, um, Meltzer, you know.

    Depends on their mentally.

Bryan Alvarez is BAFFLED by it.

It seems like a no-brainer to me. He is the best, and he's not working for WWE these days, so why wouldn't they use him if he's free? He has a genuine love for wrestling, he'll do his research.

He's the announcer. A huge announcement would be something resembling what his company is going to look like. Lot of variables with JR as already stated (mostly surrounding product knowledge). Depends very much on who is doing colour aswell. I don't really care either way, New Japan's announcers are my favourite announcers in wrestling.

If you don't think that JR is a huge announcement you clearly know absolutely nothing about the wrestling industry. One of the big reasons WWE has fallen flat in recent times is because of how terrible their announce team are. Wrestlers in the ring can only do so much, without a great announcer it seems worse than it is. JR will attract more casual wrestling fans to buy the PPV because of his brand appeal and therefore give GFW more notice as well as NJPW.

The best announcing in the world wouldn't help WWE's current midcard malaise. And the best JR will do is draw eye balls. Nobody is going to slap down $35 just to hear an announcer. An announcer doing a once off shot calling somebody else's show isn't huge news. The company has existed proper for nearly seven months now and we're none the wiser regarding even the most basic details. JR as the the lead voice of a weekly television programme would be huge news.

No point arguing with you. I'll let the buy-rates speak for themselves.

I really wouldn't end a argument on buy rates when it comes to this,ROH which has some semblance of weekly tv only got around 10,000 buys and TNA on national TV likewise so how on earth and i say this as someone who loves New Japan with them having no TV exposure going to get a high buy rate,JR alone is not going to pop a number.

Seriously if this gets more then 5 to 8,000 i would be pretty suprised

Likely a Worldwide iPPV feed of the US PPV broadcast.

    ROH did that this year.
